Des and Kara recap the Millrose Games track and field meet in New York, discussing standout performances from distance runners like Cole Hawker and Jane Hedegren, while sharing behind-the-scenes broadcasting experiences and Colt's trip to the event. They also preview the Winter Olympics opening ceremony as next week's main topic.
Insights
- Athlete personality and narrative development are critical for sports broadcasting engagement—understanding what makes each competitor unique helps audiences connect with the sport
- Venue and athlete composition matter more than track surface alone for fast times; having multiple capable competitors who press the pace creates faster racing dynamics
- Young athletes benefit significantly from positive interactions with established professionals; small gestures like photos and conversations can have outsized inspirational impact
- Strategic use of training tools like weight vests requires careful progression and should be integrated based on current fitness level rather than applied uniformly
- Behind-the-scenes broadcast production involves complex trade-offs between storytelling, commercial requirements, and live event unpredictability

Quotes
"I just wanted to be able to like, when schools or whoever would ask me, it just felt like it's, it's an hour of my time, you know? And it just makes me glad I did that kind of stuff."
Des•Mid-episode reflection on athlete mentorship
"You just never know who you're impacting. Right. I like that you didn't name them because I feel like you never know what someone's day is like, what happened, what's going on."
Kara•Discussion of athlete who didn't engage with Colt
"I have this ability to press multiple times in the last 150. It's like grinding through those gears. Like, okay, stop. No, I need to switch. Yes. And I'm going to go again."
Des•Analysis of Nikki Hiltz's kicking ability
"If anyone can get into Broadway, it's you. She just sets her mind to anything and gets it done."
Des•About Sonia Richards-Ross's multi-career approach
"I think it has more to do like, and maybe this is controversial, but like who is in the race and who's going head to head, like because Grant Fisher was out, I think that Cole Hawker and Josh Kerr are capable of running under eight minutes in the two mile."
Kara•Analysis of race dynamics and fast times

What's up, everybody? Welcome to another episode of Nobody Asked Us with Des and Kara, presented by Brooks Running. Just going to tweak some things while I spend a bit of time here. It's been a while. It's been a whirlwind to get here. experiencing some technical difficulties as we often do but for once it's not my microphone because i got a new cord that sounds nice it's on your side for one yeah that's great i feel like our cords and mics do not travel well mine went i mean mine did take a little journey i went to arizona then up to seattle oh maybe it's because i left it in the car in detroit while I was in Miami and I wonder if it's just cold. Maybe it froze. Yeah. That's my thinking because everything was really cold and obviously in my bag when I got back. It's like, oh. You would think it would be okay though, but. They're very sensitive. Well, that's what we're finding out. Yeah. I'm legit annoyed because you were like, get a new cable. And I got a new cable and it was seriously like $2 more to get two cables. but I was like, I'm not paying for that. I don't even know if it's the cable. And then it was the cable, but now we're realizing how sensitive they are. So I should have just gotten it. Okay. You got to go to Costco. Just get like a box of them. That is like the weakest point of the setup too. Right. Right. Yeah. I mean, better that being a couple dollar cable versus the mic. Right. True. True. But we have like really nice mics and really nice. I don't know what this is considered this little control box. But that, I know you're sad that your microphone isn't working today, but you had to let it go. If you had it on mute, you would think it is. You would think it is. We saw you rip your cord out the back and throw it across the room earlier. Out of frustration. It's definitely broken now. I can tell you that much. You were like, I'm pissed. We're like, we know. We can tell. you're super red but you couldn't see then because my light was different now it's yeah now you have your glow light i know you look like uh i don't know fancy i could do a like an instagram thing here you could see my ring light in the background yeah yeah it's good stuff great i'm shocked by how well this ring light's doing i would take i mean i guess i would make it a little bit warmer if it were me oh there are modes on it we can play with that later Okay. I was like, don't touch anything. How was your weekend? How was my weekend? Yeah. It was good. I was down in Miami for Formula E, which was super fun. We got to run on the racetrack of Formula, like where the cars are, which is really cool. Like just a neat experience. Like tell us about that. How big is it? How long is the track? How wide is it? yeah it's i mean it has to accommodate the pretty wide car so the grid's like two across and then i think it probably it probably doesn't narrow it's it seemed like pretty decent width like i can see why you would take chogging a monza and be like let's run it here let's try to run fat because it's just so smooth um and maintained so well uh but yeah that that circuit was like just over 2k so we did two loops with a group um and it was this awesome sunset it was just like a really cool scene uh i don't know what our time was everyone was running pretty pretty easy just kind of having a social time but i guess the cars are around like 55 seconds a lap so it puts it that's crazy it is crazy um yeah so it's fun and we got some cool photos out there and uh ryan made the trip out and got to hang out with nate from tcs who loves that name loves that name uh and a couple other folks that we've gotten to work with in the past so it was fun to to see all of that crew and um yeah and then did that and then uh went and watched the race on saturday um how long was the race just about an hour i think i want to say they did like 32 laps uh it was raining at the start so they had some like uh safety car like found like formation laps which they added on at the end um and it was super awesome because the jaguar tcs jaguar racing team guy won so then we all got to the podium it was the most vip experience which you know i love a good vip but tcs vip is like lit they did a really great job so it's fun and we did a little panel um it was with one of the reserve drivers for the jaguar team tt terry was there oh nice and then they just kind of talked about racing and like the parallels between formula E sprinting and marathoning. And, um, it was cool. It was like, they tied it together in a really fun way. So it was a good time. And also I had to see my buddy Reed out there. He was racing a 5k. So I went, had a really good dinner with him. He's a foodie. So he picked like this place that had a tasting menu and we all ate way too much, but that was a couple of days prior to his race and got up on Sunday to do a long run. I was like, oh, sweet, warm weather, shorts, maybe a tank top. Who knows? Let's get crazy. It was like 36 degrees. Feels like 26. It was insane. They were like, this is the coldest it's been. I think it was the first frost they've had ever in the morning. So I pushed the long run. But I ran on sand some. I was like, Ryan, I'm going to do a mile on a mile off or like we'll go out on the road and then come back on the sand and I did a mile and I was like that's good so did you do your long run today I did I did another treadmill nice because now you're back in Michigan it's pretty cold yeah I was gonna go outside but I was a lot like yesterday's long run where I was like I don't want to plus I'm trying to be warm so I did it with um a long sleeve on and I got weight vests I ordered three different like weights of them. Um, so yesterday I did my second run six miles in the eight pound weight vest. Wasn't bad. Have you trained in a weight vest before? Just a natural one. That's hard to imagine. Um, so when I first started running the marathon, um, that was one of the things that the very first long run I ever did, it's like I ran up and down Leaf Erickson Park in, bless you, in Portland. And then it was like 16 miles. And then I was going to run to Alberto's house, which is about four and a half miles. So I ran up and down. And then he had been biking with me and in his backpack, he had a weight vest. And he made me wear that as I ran the four and a half miles up to his house. And he was like, this is the most you can, like, this is what it's going to feel like at the end of the race. And I hated him every step, But then that just became routine. Like I would end my long runs the last four miles or so, sometimes five in a weight vest. And then once I got used to like running 20 miles or whatever, then I would take it off and run one really hard mile at the very end. And I would feel like amazing. Yeah. I'm sure it was like just totally psychosomatic, right? Like you're so tired. You already ran 20 miles, four or five of it with the weight vest. And then you add a mile and you're like, I feel amazing. It's like just totally mental. But anyway, I still have that weight vest. like a physical component to taking that off. Like it's like running literally on the lever or something where you're like, okay, no, I'm just going to run at 20%. Like you would, or whatever, take the percent off and you're like flying. It just feels easier. How much are you going to incorporate that? Are you trying to do most of your runs with that or just be really careful about when you use it? Yeah. I'm trying to sprinkle it in strategically. they literally just showed up. I have eight, 12 and 16. So 16 seems like a lot though. But I think we have to run with at least a six, you have to start with 16 pounds. Okay. So at least one day, and then you start trimming down as you go through your food and like whatever you get rid of things, um, as you use them up. But I think that right now I'm probably six to eight pounds heavier than I should be. um you say that but i just saw you you're so tiny scale like i just stepped on the scale like i like i know where like i will be when i'm like dialed when i start eating a little bit better and like not having a beer with dinner super fixed crossed um that comes off eventually right so like if i'm running with six to eight pounds extra right now. Then I put an eight pound vest on basically there. And then, you know, as I lean out or like, as I get in shape here and trim up a little bit, then I can go to 12. And so it never should, it shouldn't ever really feel that much more than I'm running with right now. Um, but we'll see. I mean, it also is dependent on me actually losing that, which happens, maybe it doesn't. Um, but yeah, so I, it's actually fairly strategic in that, like getting in shape is always kind of hard anyways, but if I'm like, Oh, let's put a little extra on so that I'm starting with something. Um, but yeah, I think I'll use it in between days for a while and then eventually do a couple long runs with the pack and then like a yeah i don't know it's gonna be in and out but not every day yeah do you think that's a good show do you have recommendations yeah i just don't want you to go all out right away because i don't want you to get injured or anything yeah but yeah i mean i do think all that stuff like works like i i know this is different but it's the same concept like my legs were never as strong as they were after I gave birth to Colt. Cause I ran, even though I was running so slow with that extra 35 pounds or what, I can't even remember anymore. I think, I think like the last appointment before he was born, I think I weighed like, I must've weighed like 159. Cause I remember being like, Oh God, I don't want to break 160. Not that it matters. Like you're carrying a human, but I was like, Oh God, I don't want to see that. And it's so, it's so it doesn't matter. But I got lucky because then before my next appointment, my water broke and he came. Actually, my doctor broke my water, but I went into labor before my next appointment. So I'm sure I did way over 160, but I never had to see it. But my legs, like everything else took a long time. Like it took a long time for me to feel like I wasn't falling apart anymore or like my speed took forever to come back, but my legs were so freaking strong. Like I could just go in the weight room and squat and press and do all this stuff like like that was the fittest part of me it's my legs were so strong yeah yeah well maybe i'll do some upper body stuff too but we'll see well you want to make sure you get like some shoulder stuff right so that the backpack doesn't kill you yeah yeah but i guess if it's on my shoulders i'm running with i mean posture wise yeah you just might want to do some stuff that like strengthens your posture. Yeah. Okay. Do you like this motion I'm doing? Like all of a sudden my head didn't get scared anymore. Yeah. Because your race is over six days, right? Yeah. I mean that over time, like it is going to get, it's going to add up. I think you're going to be great. You need to get in the weight room. You know, Magna, she knows what to do. Ask her what to do. She gave me a schedule and then she's like, are you gonna do it and i was like i'm definitely doing like she gave me some lifts and it's just like body weight stuff for the most part which i'll definitely do so that's easy but when are you gonna start doing it i'm gonna have to hold you to this for magda when are you gonna start doing it did a whole set today after my long run you did i put the eight pounds on and i did like some planks nice okay lunges um i did some other stuff too i don't remember but yeah it's a good that's awesome on my way that is a good start you're she's on her way don't be uh don't be jealous when i'm ripped later i push you around she has a little bicep popping this is the the light is making it look worse oh my gosh no one's gonna accuse you of having giant guns i don't think no i don't think that but maybe how was your weekend you had a big weekend when did you take off give us the some good flight stories, let us know how Colt did. Let's start with that. We left Friday. He ended up not having school because, well, he did have school, but the night before I missed it, an email came in saying there would still be school, but that it would basically be like just activities because they were finding out late that a lot of teachers and students were planning on going to a protest in downtown Boulder. And so he had already gone to bed. We didn't see the email. We saw it in the morning. And it was kind of like, well, we'd rather have you like stay home and learn what this is all about and then go to school and not to be mean, but like be babysat, you know? That's fair. So we decided to keep him home and to like educate him, like call our senators and stuff like that while he was there. But then after we decide, yes, you can stay home, we get an email from the principal being like, we are not, we are actually going to have class. We're like, crap. We were going to have a class. Yeah. At that point it was like, he was going to be late for school. But so we ended up just doing that. Like Adam and I talking him through like steps, showing him how to call your senators, your congressman, whatever, how to do the emails. It's like so easy. If you want to reach out, like you can go and there like for whatever it is that you passionate about Right And there like forms already filled out So we were just showing him all that stuff But then he was going to get out of school a little bit early already to go to Millrose with me So long way of saying he ended up learning about real life stuff doing a long run. He was going to have to do a long run on the treadmill like you did in New York. And he did it at home instead. And then we got picked up in the NBC car, went to the airport. It was a car. and then, um, I did put in for upgrades. And so we got upgraded to first, which was really fun on the way there. And then we got in pretty late and we slept in a little bit on Saturday. And then he, we both went for short runs in the gym, which was actually really cool because the last two years I've been like, I'm going to the gym now. Don't open the door for anyone, you know, but instead we like went to the gym together. He did a real short, he did like, I don't know. I ran three miles. I think he ran four. And then we went and saw my dad's sister for a while, had lunch with her. She made us all this super healthy food. I was super proud of Colt. That was probably the most vegetables he's ever eaten in his life. He was just like forcing it down. It was like so delicious. Like for me, it was like an amazing lunch. So many vegetables, salads, quinoa salad, all this stuff. She made salmon that she marinated herself for Colt. It was like, oh my God, just don't be rude and eat enough, you know? And then that night we went over to the track to have the production meeting. And then the next day was the meet. So, I mean, it went by super fast and he was so good. Like I had to study a lot. I hadn't done my prep yet. So he had to just sort of like sit in the hotel room while I did all my prep work. But he was great. He did awesome. Is he close enough? Is he getting close enough where you can be like, you can explore the city, don't go beyond this block? Or are you like, not yet, no? I don't think I would have let him go in New York, no. But we were going to walk around for a little bit after the production meeting because that's what we've done the last couple of years is we just walked around for like an hour. But it was so cold. And I had told him, it's going to be freezing. You need to bring a lot of stuff, you know? And he's like, I have it, I have it. And then he was like, I'm so cold. And I've never seen him cold. He's not like, he's just that kid that like, isn't never wears a jacket. I mean, there's like a joke at the team at Fairview. If it's like above 30, cold, it's going to take his shirt off, you know? But he was cold. And so we ended up, we ended up ordering room service and just hanging out. We watched a movie. What movies watch? We watched something on Netflix about this I can't remember what it's called. The Something Murders where this kid was out in a boat with his mom. His mom the boat sinks and he gets rescued on like a little dinghy. I don't know. It wasn't that good. Okay. I won't look it up. I mean it's a true story but I would Colt and I love stuff like that and we were both kind of like meh. Yeah. We wouldn't recommend it. Yeah. Anyway, he's a trooper because it's a fun trip, but it's not like the meat is the fun part, right? And the rest of it is like him sitting through meetings and sitting in a car and having to talk to a bunch of adults, which he's really good at. Yeah. Did he go to the production meeting? He did, yeah. He was really hoping that some of the athletes will be doing their shakeouts, but we had the production meeting quite late. It was at 5.30, and so everyone was already gone. Yeah, so he was kind of like, oh, he was really sad. Then he was working with his camera a little. Yeah, he was like working on his camera, and then he was kind of like sitting in the back, and then he came and sat by me during the meeting, but I could tell he was like, I wish I was just in the hotel. Yeah, not walking on the street. Yeah. Yeah. But I mean, it's good for him to see. One thing that I really love about bringing Colt on this trip is he gets to see all the different avenues in which you can be involved in track and field. You can be the production manager. You can be the producer. You can be... We were talking to people with the meet. We're in the meeting. This is the order we want people announced so that it flows with the television coverage. I mean, there's so many people involved in what I do and, you know, as far as an announcer, let alone like everything else that happens, you know? Right. So it's cool for him. Like he was like, wait, this person does what? And this person does what? And some of them I'm like, I actually don't know. They're just kind of always around and they're awesome. Right. Yeah. Yeah. And, but you know, he's so funny. Like right before the meet starts, he's like talking to people and Sonia's like, do you need to go over there? Like those people have been talking to Colt forever. And I was like, he looks like he's handling himself fine. And he was going to kind of, he had a pass that really only allowed him to be right by the, where our booth was. And he was just going to hang out kind of by us and take pictures. And at one point I looked down and he's nowhere. And then I'm watching the television coverage and I see him over where like you get interviewed after you finish your race by all the press. I'm like, how did he even get in there? I mean, he just like takes care of himself, you know? and he had a blast. In the building, anything can happen. Yeah. He's just like, he's so great. So then, and he feels like he knows a lot of the athletes. And that's one thing I'll say is like the athletes were so good to him. Like they all, like not all of them, but the ones that we have met in the past, like took time to talk to him, like get a picture with him and chat with him. Like, I mean, there was one athlete that he got a picture with that was clearly annoyed, but the other people he really wanted to talk to Jane Hedegren. She was like, oh my gosh, Colt. I'm sure she needed to go do her cool down. She stood there and she talked to him for a while. Cole Hawker talked to him. Josh Kerr talked to him. Hobbs Kessler gave him a huge hug, asked him all about his season. It was so awesome. The only person he didn't get to see was Nikki Hiltz because we had to leave and they were still being interviewed. We had to leave for the airport. But aside from one other athlete who shall not be named. Everyone was like so nice to him. And that just goes so far. Yeah. Like you just never know who you're impacting. Right. I like that you didn't name them because I feel like you never know what someone's day is like, what happened, what's going on. And maybe they're a listener of the pod and maybe next time they'll be like, oh shit, you're right. Like these moments do matter. And I did tell Cole, I said he didn't have the day he wanted. And I'm sure like, I don't know if he's dinged up or if he just had a bad day, but like, I'm sure he just wanted to like get on his cool down and like kind of download what just happened. Um, and so you can't take it personally, but I really do appreciate, it makes me think back on my career. I had, you know, Salzar and even Schumacher. Sometimes I'd always get myself into this stuff. Like Shalene and I would have this, we had one time had this giant workout and then I had volunteered to run a 5k with girls on girls on the run, like 10 to late the night before. And Jerry's like, what the hell are you doing? Like we have one of the most important workouts to run. I was like, well, I have to go, you know, and yeah, I can't bail. And like, I ended up like being so stressed about it and then ended up having a great workout anyway. But even with Salazar, I'd get like, I'd end up going to classrooms and this and that. And he'd be like, why you shouldn't be on your feet all the time, but I just had, I just wanted to be able to like, when, when schools or whoever would ask me, it just felt like it's, it's an hour of my time, you know? And it, and I'm, it just makes me glad I did that kind of stuff. And so I just, if any athletes are listening, it goes so far and I know you can't always do it. Um, but just to like take that picture or sign that autograph, like Colt was so excited the whole drive to the airport. He's like, I mean, the whole weekend And before that, he's like on his phone, you know, like we were getting along fine, but he's like on his phone in his own world. And then it was just like, we're connecting. He's talking about all these people. Um, and so I just really appreciate it. It was really cool that, that people were so good to him. Yeah. That's awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Does, will he go back and watch the broadcast? Like, does he listen to your commentary or is he just like, I watched it. I'm good. Yeah. I know it's good. Like if he hadn't come, he probably would watch it. But yeah, no, he won't go back and rewatch it. He's like, I lived it. Yeah. Don't put a commercial in my memory. Yeah, exactly. Oh, man, we had to run a commercial in the women's 3000. And I just said, I'm not taking the hate for this. Like, I understand it had to happen. And it was like, either it goes in the women's 3000 or the men's two mile. and when the decision had to be made, the two mile looked like very good for a world record. And so we had to go with the women's 3000. But I was like, that's not on me. I'm not taking the hate. But that stuff is so rough, man. It is. It's so rough. I mean, they have to get it in. They have to fit it in. That's how it gets on TV. That's how you pay the bills. That's how these things get in. But also you're like, I have the longest events. and they're going to get interrupted. And it's probably going to be a crucial moment where you're like, well, we missed the break, but here it is. Welcome back. And I also felt like we have a very American audience for Milrose and we're really introducing Jane Hedegren for the first time because most people don't know who she is, right? Like last year, she ran, she was all about high school, right? And like that didn't, wasn't on NBC. And then she ran cross, but unless you like paid attention to that. So, I mean, we're going to be hearing about her so much over the next, you know, who knows however many years. I was going to say like four to 10, but like four to 20, I don't even know. But I just was like, this is the first time like people are meeting her and hearing of her. So it was just kind of a bummer because I wanted to like storytell that more, but we probably won't see her again unless she, this year, unless she runs outdoor champs. Yeah. Yeah. So I guess it's like we can reintroduce her again down the road. But yeah, that's the thing about TV is like you, you know, like there has to be so many field updates. There have to be so many sports reports just because we're on plain old NBC. So there has to be like other field report stuff that happens. There has to be so many commercials. They just have to be in there. And so it's like it, the production meetings can sometimes be like everyone fighting. Right. You know. It's the most. Yeah. Yeah. But it was like either the 3,000 or the two-mile was going to be interrupted. And as much as I wanted to show the women's full 3,000, that Grant Fisher came out of the race the next morning. But even then, I still think the men's two-mile, just with the amount of medalists. It was such a big skill. Just with the amount of medalists. Yeah. Like Olympic champions, world champions, like you had to – that had to go uninterrupted if you had to pick between the two. Fully agree. And Sonia's back. How was that? how I was calling the 800 with a three-person booth. Always challenging, but I'm sure working with Sonia was fun. Well, this is the funny part is like on the production call, I said who, so there was a 600s, 800s and thousands. Oh yeah. And I was like, who is calling the 600? Sonia alone. I'm like, who's calling the 800? Sonia and Otto. And I was like, okay, who's calling the thousand? And they were like, you know, it's basically just an 800. So it'll be Sonia and Otto. I'm like, great. We're in the production meeting and they're all asking me who I think should be introduced. And I was like, well, I would say so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so. And then I would mention Addie Wiley. And I was like, but it's up to you guys. You guys are calling it. And then both Sonia and Otto were like, we're not calling it. Otto's like, that's way too far for me. And Sonia's like, I don't know anything about the thousands. So then we had this whole thing. Colt was actually laughing at this whole part. He's like, mom, you kept going. You told me I wasn't doing it. I'm not prepared. This is extra work. I want a bonus. Yeah. And Lewis Johnson was like, well, you could do it right now. You're the one telling us the storylines of the event. So then we were talking, it was like, okay, Kara's definitely doing it. Who's doing it with her? And then Otto was like, I'm out. So it was actually really fun to do it with Sonia. I had never really called a three-way call with her before and we worked really well together. And even like on the intros, you know, she was like, who do you want? And, and then she would like say something and look at me or vice versa. She'd point at me if she wanted me to go. So I thought it was really fun. Yeah. I thought I was new. I had never done that before. I was excited to hear it. Just, I mean, she's back in like getting in the mix. The three person's always fun and how the dynamics work, but also her kind of stepping up a little bit for like, yeah towards the longer stuff right yeah it was funny because she was like what I don't know this event and I'm like I don't either really that much longer but yeah yeah so it was so good to have her back so she missed last year she was at Millrose last year she was pregnant and she announced her pregnancy I think a week or two after that and then she gave birth to her son air, I think July 1st. So she missed the outdoor season, understandably. And so it was just, I just love having Sonia around. Like she's really funny. She tells the best stories. She like claps back at everybody. She's just good energy. So she won't do US indoors or world champs. But she's back back. Like as soon as the outdoor season starts, she's just always only done milrose indoors i guess like we just have a smaller yeah team indoors um but she comes in for milrose because that's our most watched right that's indoor meet that we produce yeah it's like it gets more viewership than the u.s champs and sonia's you know she's like a big deal so she comes to that one yeah she's like i will be there i noticed she had a few on cameras let talk about it one let take a fit and then we have to talk about your segment with the the milrose anniversary i didn even know about that let just start there as we as we on camera so like the night before they said we were supposed to show quincy wilson run the 400 but he ended up scratching so so um rich o'connor who was our producer said we're going to do a second on camera and then just really hype the wannamaker miles because that's like the show the historical part of the Milrose games. So he's like, instead of showing this 400, we're going to put Kara and Paul back on camera. Hopefully you'll be able to really quick recap a world record in the two mile and then you'll set up the Wanamaker miles. Well, so we really quick turn around, we get on camera and then all of a sudden Paul starts talking about some anniversary and I'm like, what is he talking about? And then, yeah. I didn't even see, there was like a picture of me and Sarah Hall, I guess. Yeah. I was just like, yeah, it's like, you guys let me know. So I can be prepared. Um, but anyway, it caught me so off guard because then we were supposed to talk about the women's race and I couldn't even think. So it's like, it's funny to surprise me. Yeah. And it's the second year in a row they've done something like that to me. Cause last year we were calling the high school girls mile and then they put footage of Colt running from the night before. So it's the second year in a row where they've totally caught me off guard and I, it's fine. And I love that they do that. And I love that they amp me and like our other producer, Steven Greenberg, he's put me like winning Milrose in the coverage before. So it's like, I love that they want to remind the audience that I know what I'm talking about, but like, it's just good to know that that's going to happen. So I'm like ready for it. So I had no idea that was going to happen. Um, but anyway, Yeah. So we had the first on camera where we were all, where we were kind of hitting on everything. It was kind of funny because it's a low key sprint meet, right? Like there aren't a ton of stars that come to it. And then Sonia really wanted to hype Cooper Luckton House, obviously, because he's a big deal and he was running. And then I had this whole spiel. I was supposed to hype everything, right? And so I had like 25 seconds. So I had this whole spiel about how we had Olympic and world championship medalists and everything from the 15 through the 10 and all this stuff. And then Grant Fisher woke up feeling sick. So I had to quick like rethink the wording that I was going to have, but it was fun and it was fine. And like we, I think I've talked about on cameras are not my favorite. And last week our on camera got canceled at the last second because there was breaking national news. And I was like, oh, shucks. So they made you make up for I was still totally made up. Oh, that's the other thing is like, so this makeup artist who did my makeup, I've worked with her before. She does a great job. Like I just go in there and she, she takes me from this tired face to like glam, but we're Colt and I are at the airport and he's like, I know we're about to board, but can you go wash your face? You look like you're AI. That's really funny. And I was like, yes, like, cause I know I'm going to break out. So I'm like washing my face in the airport bathroom and it's just coming and coming and using all these paper towels and this woman yeah this woman comes up texting me and she's like wow you have a lot of makeup on i was like i know anyway it looked great but colt he was like i can't sit by you on the plane you're a high are you in there mom yeah he's like is that you yeah yeah it's just yeah It is wild. It's not like normal makeup where you're like, this is what I would wear out. It's like, this is what looks good under the lights of the camera. Right. I mean, it is like lit up on your face, right? Yeah. It's actually funny because I got there and I saw some people, I got there early and then I went straight into hair and makeup. And then I came out and saw them again like an hour later and they're all like, whoa. They're like, oh my God, hi. You could borrow my ring light next time and just hold it in front of you. It's like, see, this is why. This is why. I was like, okay, I know. I never learned how to do makeup and stuff. Clearly, I have not either. I'm guessing that you didn't either. Yeah, like I just never got taught that kind of stuff. My sisters don't wear makeup. My mom doesn't really wear makeup. So it's like I never got taught any of that stuff. And so like, for instance, to get over, we were supposed to, so the meet started at four, we were supposed to leave our hotel at 115. And Louis and Sonia were like, let's leave later. We don't need to be in the booth until 245. And I was like, well, I have to go over because I have to do my makeup. And Louis was like, come on, you don't know how to do that yet. And I was like, no. No, I'm not going to learn. I'm 47. I'm not going to learn now. Totally. I'm like, I have a tinted moisturizer. That'll do it. Right, right. My sunscreen has a little tint to it. I'm like, I'm not going to, I don't, I haven't learned to this point. I'm not going to learn now. And honestly, like I'm, I'm glad there are people who do that for me. I super appreciate it, but I actually don't feel comfortable outside of that context looking like that. You know what I mean? It goes back to like TV makeup where you're like, this is for anything, but TV. You're right. Yeah. So anyway, but I mean, you saw the races, they were good. They were good. Do you have any, do you want to do any highlights because I'm going to take you back to Friday. Yeah, let's just do after this. Give me some, yeah. Okay. Surprise. Okay. I wanted another surprise. Great. I would just do a high level real quick of the four distance races. Take the 1K out of it because I don't know that super well, but to Guma won. I would say my takeaway in the Women's 3000 was that Jane Hedegren is going to be amazing. Doris Lemongole is, I'm like too good for the NCAA. Yeah. I mean, she is so good. She could have run so much faster, I think. Like, she could have been in another race that was rabbited, like, even 10 seconds faster, I think, and she would have been fine. So, I just wonder how long until she's, like, bored of the NCAA, right? I mean, I do think it's a really good, like, it's good to practice winning. Win as much as you can, you know, like, be someone who refuses to lose. but when that doesn't become a challenge, then it's like you could get complacent. Yeah. I mean, she seemed super excited about her win and about the race. So, I mean, good for her. And she is just so good. And what I really like about her is like, well, I like the way that the other women of the NCAA talk about her. They talk about her really raising the bar for all of them. And I think that's really cool. She reminds me of the Sally Kipiego, Jenny Simpson years, where Jenny was always losing to Sally. And she was like, well, I wouldn't have gotten to where I got without Sally. Like she just raised the bar so much. So that was a great race. Um, uh, next was the men's two mile, which was such a good race. It was super hyped as a world record attempt. And on the drive over when we found out, well, I found out that Grant was out earlier, but when we were driving over, I was like, I bet there is no world record now because Grant's the guy, he's the guy that'll go right on the pacemaker and keep it going, you know? and they were a little quick at the beginning and I thought, oh, I mean, they were significantly quicker than, than Kerr went out when he said it originally. Um, they were two seconds faster through the first 400. And I was just like, they're going to back off of this. Cause they're, it's just a little too, too on the gas and yeah. And then it, it became a race, but I actually love that because you saw Haptum Samuel go to the front, the collegiate, you saw like all these changes in the race and I actually thought that made it a super exciting race and yeah um it you know in the end Cole Hawker won he is like just so good at figuring out how to win and I just feel like he has a new level of confidence like he already did after winning the Paris 1500 but especially last year after winning world champs 5000 he's just so calm I've changed him like between the years a little bit and you could even see him when he let that pacer go like he was the guy driving the train and he's like everyone's gonna key off me yeah do the thing I need to do to make this put this race in my hands and in my favor which I feel like to have a big kick was like that's where his confidence lies when when they came around the corner for the home stretch on the before the bell lap so not even like 250 meters to go he's completely boxed in yeah and I was like he's still gonna he'll be fine because he just doesn't Also so frustrating. I know. I know. But he didn't panic. The bell rings and all of a sudden he's skirted around and on the outside. I thought Josh Kerr ran really well considering everyone else had had, you know, like he comes in like what we would call cold. Yeah. No rust buster. And even Cole Hawker talked about how the weekend before he raced and he was like, I forget how much it hurts. Yeah. You know? Kind of funny. And I'm just like, Josh Kerr, it's just super impressive that he can do that. Just come in cold like that. And he ran, yeah, he ran a great race, tactically a good race. He came, tried to come through on the inside, which I think most years would have worked, but Cole Hawker just wasn't going to be denied. Well, he was in a great spot too. There was almost a little trip up behind him and like that. Yeah. It was going to be the thing that maybe, like he stayed clear of it, I believe. And it was like, oh, this is the thing that's going to allow him to separate. But I think that also goes back to how good Cole Hawker is. Like he was involved and he was like, it brushed it right off. Yeah. No, it was a really good race. It did have me thinking, because, you know, the races have been so fast there the last two years, like Kerr set the two mile world record two years ago. Last year, there was the 3000 meter world record and the 1500 meter world record. And so I think there's become this thing of like, oh, the track is just fast there. But I actually think it has more to do like, and maybe this is controversial. but like who is in the race and who's going head to head, like because Grant Fisher was out, I think that Cole Hawker and Josh Kerr are capable of running under eight minutes in the two mile. Absolutely. But I think it, you need that one other person who's also capable, who's, who's going to press in the middle. You know what I mean? He doesn't have quite the same kick. That's like, I don't want it to be left to a kick. Right. Yeah. So it's like outright. Cause he's just faster. or the kickers are going to be able to hang and be played to the fast time. Yeah. Yeah. So it's like it changes the dynamic of the race. And I'm like, I'm not sure. I mean, I know that it is a fast venue. Don't get me wrong. It's a fast venue. It's a very responsive track. It's super loud in there. But I don't think it's necessarily like this track service is magical. I think it's like the venue, the athletes they get, the way they come together, the way everybody races. And I just thought that like in that race and then also in the men's mile, Like we've just seen Yard Nagusko so aggressive the three years prior. And even though he ran awesome, he wasn't as aggressive. And so therefore the pace, and I hate to say this because it was so fast. Anytime it's 3.47. But, and I'm using air quotes here, legged, you know, because once again, you need that person who's going to go just crazy. That forces everybody else to go crazy too. and Yard just was a little bit off of where he was the last few years. So that was interesting. I thought that maybe Hobbs Kessler was going to pull that off, although he was kind of getting bumped around a little bit in the back. His position wasn't great. I was impressed that Yard actually fought back over the home stretch. But Cam Myers of Australia won. You know what I want from Cam Myers? Tell me. I need a little like – you know, we have so much personality in the 1500. Yeah. And I'm not sure what his is yet. He's so young and he probably doesn't know himself. Like he's still building it. And then you have what, the 16-year-old kid who set the under 20? Was it the under 20 record or is that Cam Myers? No, he's 16. Cam Myers has, yeah. I think Cam Myers has the U20 and he has the U18. Okay. Sam Ruth. But yeah, it's like, it's just like you, like Josh Kerr is like the one that's going to fight you a little bit. Inga Britson is the one that thinks he's better than everyone else. You know, Cole Hawker is like the one that's just focused on the one big thing and shuts out all of this crap. Yard is like the orthodontist and like always having fun, you know. Yeah, Hobbs is like the young guy who's like really technically sound and always trying to be better. And so I'm like, what is Cam Myers thing? Like we need to get to know Cam Myers better so that we can plug him into this cast of characters. Yeah. Well, I think that he's going to be around for a good stretch here. Yeah. Along with the other 16-year-old and then Hobbs. I think that there's – it feels like there might be a changing of the guards soon. Obviously, there's a big statement, but it's a long season, and we'll see how Cam Myers develops throughout the season. But that was a good first step. And I will go back to Parker Wolfe had a really nice race as well. I thought that that was like – he just stuck his nose in it and was like, no, I'm for real. I belong. That was exciting too. I feel a little bit bad because I saw a highlight of it And when he took the lead, I was like, he went too early. And I'm like, I actually hate that I said that. Um, because I, what I wish I would have said was like, how gutsy that, how gutsy it is for him to go in front of these people. He's never been on a world championship team. He's never been on a lump. I mean, he's been on a world cross team, but he hasn't been on a world track team or an Olympic team. And he just went for it in the moment. I was like, he went too early. I think he went too early. They're going to get him. And I feel bad that I said that. So I doubt you're a listener, but I'm actually a huge Parker Wolf fan. So I hate that I said that. I feel like it turned out I was right, but. For the race, it was the right thing to say because. I was just like, I think he went too early here. Yeah. But for himself and his confidence and where he's at as an athlete, it was like a big statement of, you know. Totally. He's gutsy. Yeah. I totally agree with you. It was awesome. It's like, that's what you want to see, right? These younger guys like being like, I have what they have. Yeah. Why not? I not intimidated by your world title or by your Olympic title I have what you have So yeah And then I guess the last race that I was really focused on was the women 1500 where uh, LA St. Pierre pulled out a couple of days early. Um, and then Dorcas Eway pulled out the morning of, and so that also really shifted that the dynamic of the race, I think, I think if St. Pierre had been in there, I think she would have gone straight behind the pacemaker. And I think, I just think it would have been like a faster effort. Um, But it was good. Sinclair Johnson went for it. Then she kind of fell apart. I think she just had an off day. Jess Hall, you know, it's, you know what I like is that Jess Hall really sort of, she didn't close in on Kipiagam, but she kind of bridged the gap a little bit. And then it woke all these other women up. yeah they're like oh I can do that right I can run with Jess you know so it took like the Paris year she was kind of way ahead of everybody and then I feel like other women are kind of closing the gap a little bit on her even though she's like so good but it was cool that um I just feel like that's lit a spark under so many other people and it was cool like I gotta tell you Nikki Hiltz has something pretty special which is that I've never like I've really have only seen this maybe one other time and someone like Jenny Simpson, they have this ability to press multiple times in the last 150. Yeah. Like go, go again, go again. Right. It's like grinding through those gears. Like, okay, stop. No, I need to switch. Yes. And I'm going to go again and I'm going to go a third time. And yeah, it's so impressive. And I'm thinking like, wow, this might be the year where Nikki really, I mean, Nikki won a Diamond League last year and was fifth at World Champs. But this could really be the year where Nikki wins on that big stage more often. It was really cool to see them win. Super happy for them. They're awesome. But I was just, that really stood out to me because I remember watching it last year at Indoors in the 3000. it was like Nikki versus Shelby Houlihan and Shelby came and Nikki like met it and then Shelby came again and Nikki went again. But to see it like so clearly yesterday, that is a skill that I never had. Right. Well, yeah. I mean, it's obviously the physical component, but to mentally not be broken when someone comes back and passes you, you know, I think that that's the interesting part. It's like, nope I'm gonna I'm gonna push one more time there's still room there's there's still time to like win this thing or battle at least um yeah yeah it was the first time I really noticed too I don't know if I said in the broadcast but it was just something I really noticed was that Nikki's is has this super quick knee lift it's like like um just visually I don't know that I've ever like truly taken it in before like I'm like oh Nikki's a kicker if it comes down to it they'll win. But just finding out why is Nikki so good at the kick? It's crazy how quickly Nikki comes off the track. It's a little Cole Hawker-esque. Do you think that's something they work on? Is that like drills? Probably. Yeah. Finishing speed or just a talent? I'm sure it's both, right? You have to be talented enough to develop that, but probably a ton of wickets and drills and stuff like that. But just, it's crazy how the knees are coming up so high. It's like a sprinter. It's, I don't know. Visually, it's the first time I've like really been like, whoa, look at Nikki's legs. That's insane. I'm excited you brought that up because I don't think I've ever tuned into that or noticed that specifically, but now I'll be watching. Yeah. Well, now I'm definitely going to be paying attention to it because it really stood out to me and I was like, oh man, I wish I would have talked about that more. But anyway, it was a great day. It was cool. And Colt had a blast. So it was a fun trip. Love it. That was the main purpose of the show. We should quickly, before we pivot, I'm going to take you back to Friday. But before we should talk about the Lever Contest winner, which we don't have yet, but we will have soon. right so it yeah you guys will be listening to this on wednesday that means you have two more days to enter the contest it closes february 6th at noon mountain time which is to eastern time translation did i do that right and it's your chance you just have to there's a link in our show notes um and i've posted it on my social i'll post it again but you can i'm sure does well too but you can go and enter yourself and someone's going to win a free lever that you can just have. And so when we talk about it, you could have one for free. Right. And then you can buy a weight vest and you could see the difference. Put the vest on and then put on the lever and then do all kinds of crazy things. You could be totally crazy. I think you could just stick with the lever and see how it lifts you up and enhances your training. Super useful tool. So definitely get signed up for that if you're not already. And if you are, good luck. We'll announce a win. All right. Let's go back to Friday because before all of that chaos, we got on a call for a podcast that is not this one and got to talk a lot of things, Winter Olympics. Do you want to give the details of the pod? And then we can kind of touch on some of the topics with the little bit of time left. Yes, I know. Sorry, I geeked out on track. Sarah Spain, who I love, she's just a huge leader in the women's sports space. She has a podcast called Good Game. It's the only daily women's sports podcast. She had Des and I on, us on, to talk about our Olympic experience. It was really fun. It just got us thinking like, oh, we should be talking about this stuff with our listeners. Yeah. I kind of feel like this is a whole show and maybe we should wait. Maybe we shouldn't even. I know. I'm like, we could talk about this. Like we wanted to talk about our experience at the opening ceremonies because they come on this Friday, but maybe we could still just do it next week. Like we should watch. People will watch the opening. Yeah. Everybody watch it. Like we wanted. So did you go to opening ceremonies in Rio? I did not. And I think that that's a topic in itself, right? Yeah, totally. Totally. Cause that was my experience as well. So we are going to table this. This was going to be our main topic today, but this will be our topic for next week. Um, because I think it is definitely, it could be a full episode of what it's like, the decisions you make, you know, the experiences, the emotions, all that kind of stuff. Um, but if you want to get a little taste of it, you could listen to us on Sarah Spain's good game pod, but we'll dive into it much, much in much more depth next week. So I think that we have homework. We're going to, we should be watching the Winter Olympic opening ceremony and you should too, listeners. And then if you have questions about it, or you're thinking about something that you want to know more about, um, put them in the comments on the Instagram posts or on our YouTube. And we'll try to dig into some of those as well. I think, yeah, I think that that's a topic that deserves a lot of attention or at least it's just fun. It's different. And we can go behind the scenes in a way that not a lot of podcasters can. So we should, I think. Yeah, perfect. All right. Well, we should do a top five at least since we didn't do that entire topic. Yeah, I guess we can do that. Okay. Do you want me to start? sure do you want to start no you can start okay that means I have three I'm fine I'll take it um I'm gonna go with the TCS Jaguar racing team down at Formula E super cool experience I feel like it doesn't get the love of Formula One not nearly as big but um really exhilarating and people should be checking this sport out but also now you have a team to root for the Jaguar team um super it's just a fun experience. And there's so many overtakes. If you're watching it, like Formula One, you're like, there's no passing. It's just like who did the fastest qualifier and then it stays the same. There's so much passing in this sport. And the guy from Jaguar was ninth on the grid who ended up winning it. So that's just a little bit perspective. And then it's also this kind of electronic car component of managing your energy. There's just so much technology in that sport that trickles down into your cars and like what people are driving and what we're moving towards. So I think it's worth getting into and following and supporting. That's really cool. That's number one. All right. I'm going to go with someone you already mentioned, Sonia Richards-Ross, who was back on the broadcast. One of the things I love about Sonia is she has lived a million lives, right? Like she won the Olympic gold medal and she could have been like, done. I'm out. But instead she like got into broadcasting. She had her own reality show for a while called, I can't remember what it's called now. So something gold. That sucks. I can't remember, but it was great. And then she wrote a book and then she had like a morning show for a little while. And then she was on Real Housewives of Atlanta. And then obviously she's still broadcasting. And she went to one of her friends from when she was on the Real Housewives. She went to see her friend Candy on Broadway on Saturday night. And she was like, I wish I would have done something like that. That wasn't a thing that people around me did when I was younger. And I'm like, Sonia Richards-Ross, who's a woman of a thousand lives. I mean, she has three children now. I'm like, if anyone can get into Broadway, it's you. She just sets her mind to anything and gets it done. So she is fun to be around. And she also really, what I love about her is there's just like sky's the limit in her life. Like whatever she dreams, she's like, I might just go do that. And it's always just good to be reminded. Like you can always, you can always like start over, like try something new or whatever. So it's fun to be around her and she's just kind of inspiring to be around. I like it. That's a good one. Yeah. Um, I'm going to shout out my buddy, Reed Buchanan, who has been a monster on the racing circuit, but for some reason doesn't get enough love. He's not sponsored, but he just enjoys racing. And so he'll go out and just try and win. That's his only objective is find a race that I can go to where I can win, hopefully pick up some money. And it's pure love of the game. So it's pretty fun to see him. He was just a really hyper-focused pro and was in the marathon, was having some hamstring stuff and lost his sponsorship because he couldn't get that figured out, but he's like invested in having a surgery on that. That's like improved a ton. Um, and he's just really passionate about the sport. So it's fun to see him do that with a little less pressure on himself. Um, but he also has like a six month old son. So like he's doing it while dadding at the same time. So, uh, bravo to Reed who took another win down in Miami. Um, and it was his birthday when we were down there. So we got to have a nice birthday dinner with him, which is cool. That's cool. Yeah. Good job, Reed. I will say just another thank you to all the athletes that were so nice to Colt, but a special thank you to Hobbs Kessler, who took a tumble at the end of the mile and was limping and still talked to Colt and hugged him and asked him how his season was going and then DM'd him this morning. Did he give him haircut advice? No. Better check that DM. But I just thought he went above and beyond and he, it's like just so cool because he has a huge impact way bigger than he'll ever know. You know, like Colt, both of his parents are Olympians and he's like, yeah. And so I just, I mean, Colt's been super lucky that a lot of people have treated him really well, but just a special shout out to Hobbs Kessler because he really really inspired Colt a lot this weekend did he get a follow he already followed Colt oh there you go they're like buds yeah they are I know Colt's like so excited he's never gotten a dm though so this is like breaky he was like yeah he was in his bathroom getting ready for school and he goes oh my god and we're like what that's how pops is yeah so he was like stoked so anyway it's pretty cool it's pretty cute yeah um all right i'm gonna wrap it up with um a little toss back to last week where we got to do a irl moment in real life karen des hanging out um a very very full day and we got a lot of stuff done. I think there's so much exciting stuff on the horizon for the pod and for, you know, how we hope to grow this thing. But all of that aside, it was just fun to hang because we don't get to do that. It was really fun. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cheers. It was great to see you in real life and hang out. And also it was just so exciting to think about. I mean, not even think about like start to plan some of these bigger things over the next three years. So it was really fun. Yeah. Going global. Going global. That's right. All right. Till next week. Thank you. Thank you.
