Summary

Olympic bronze medalist Adam Rippon joins the hosts at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan to discuss figure skating competitors, opening ceremony highlights, and predictions for the women's and men's skating events. The episode features detailed breakdowns of international and American skaters competing for medals.

Insights
  • Mental resilience and perspective shift are critical performance factors—Rippon's Olympic success came after letting go of pressure and competing as an older first-time Olympian with a different mindset
  • Authenticity and unconventional narratives resonate in figure skating—skaters like Alyssa Liu who retire and return on their own terms, or performers like Katya Kurokova with distinctive personas, create compelling storylines
  • Technical difficulty (quad jumps, triple axels) creates measurable competitive advantages that can overcome other performance gaps in Olympic scoring
  • Performance art and literalism in figure skating (shark portrayal, cat costumes, Minions programs) are expanding the sport's appeal and opening IP licensing conversations
  • Generational diversity in Olympic teams—younger skaters (age 17) competing alongside veterans creates dynamic competitive landscapes and inspires broader audiences
Trends
Figure skating embracing camp and unconventional performance art to attract younger audiences and expand sport viewershipMental health and retirement-comeback narratives becoming central to athlete branding and Olympic storylinesTechnical innovation (quad axels, triple axels) as primary competitive differentiator in elite figure skatingIncreased visibility of LGBTQ+ athletes and personalities in Olympic broadcasting and commentaryInternational figure skating talent (Japan, Poland, Italy, France, Kazakhstan) creating more competitive parity at OlympicsPersonality-driven athlete marketing through social media (Instagram retirements, TikTok presence) reshaping traditional Olympic narrativesWomen's figure skating technical difficulty progression outpacing historical norms with multiple skaters attempting previously impossible jumpsOlympic opening ceremonies shifting toward distributed production models with multiple venue locations and body doubles

I found chicken parm in Italy. Holy moly. And they said Milan was not going to be hospitable to tourists. I don't know. They didn't say it. They never said that. No, they never said that. But they did say there would be no chicken parm here because it's quote, an American thing. I say you haven't come to the NBC commissary at the IBC. And if you're not there, you're not eating in Milan. I'm talking to my folks here in Studio B, the Cortina Studio. Y'all undersold the commons, the commons. You really did. A gelato cart. We go, earlier we go, hey, how's the food here? We go. And then, and then someone goes, they go, it's good for being free. And I was like, well, I guess it's not great. That chicken parma's restaurant grade. I had an amazing fettuccine, sort of like pesto situation with full raw pine nuts on top. Raw, he said. So I want to say I ate two huge pieces of chicken parm. You only need one. That's the thing about chicken parm. And we're going to go to dinner tonight to a restaurant that one of my chicest friends suggested. Did I fill up on commissary chicken parm? Stay tuned. But you don't have to stay tuned for very long for our guest. Isn't that right, Bo? Our guest is a beautiful presence here at the Games. This is someone... You're just... Say the word, icon. And I, of course, well, that goes without saying. Yeah. But this is someone where you land in Milan and you hear the words, Adam Rippon's here. Rippon rhymes with Milan. Kind of. Oh, kind of. In a slant way. I think you hadn't even thought about that yet. I hadn't. I've thought about a lot of things since I've been here, but the rhyming of my surname. With the city? Yes. Have you thought about the time you won a bronze medal in Pyeongchang? Until this moment? No. We're here to remind you. It has not crossed my mind. You've had bronze around your neck. Humble. Humble king. Since that day. For eight years. I took it off right before. They said, take it off. How's your neck? It's too much. Thick. Thick. Strong. Tendony. Thick, strong. He's been throwing it for years. Hey. What? Throwing neck? Throwing neck. It's an event. It's an event. It's an event. It's an event. It's okay. Throwing neck. silver who wins the bronze silver medal here in throwing neck all right let's not do that this is now three guys five rings three guys five rings we've only had true queer icons on this show oh please johnny greg luganus luganus and now on three say it with me my co-host Jennifer Lawrence Jennifer Lawrence just appearing in Adam Rippon it's so wonderful to see you thank you thank you everyone to see a friendly gay face here in Milan you have to understand our shoulders dropped I could so did mine do you know I feel like we've never met in person we haven't it's not been in person no it feels it does feel wrong because I do feel like I know you guys yes well especially through like Michelle Collins oh the best yeah She's a gold medalist comedian. She should be on your new podcast, My New Favorite Olympian. She's an Olympian. I mean, if anybody deserves the honorary title, it is Michelle Collins. It is Olympic how she just can keep talking. I've never in my life met somebody who could talk about nothing for an hour plus on end every day, all day. But you're with every, you're hanging on to every syllable. It's a thrilling adventure. How she is not Wendy Williams on television right now, I'll never know. I don't understand why they're not just putting her in front of a camera with one talking point and letting her go for as long as possible. It's the biggest failure in television. No, yeah, you're right. It's one of them. Oh, I would agree. This is like a leading question, but wouldn't you want her to be like your co-commentator? Yes, I would like die at the chance. I mean, two guys, one girl. Yeah. Five rings. Wait, really? And then there's you. Well, I am directing it. You're directing. Not to put anybody out of a job. No, no, no. Everyone's fine. They're going to go to... They'll bounce back. The workforce is thriving. Doing great. They're going to work because they've talked smack. Yeah. No, it is good. And I'm kind of with you that if it's on an Olive Garden menu, it is Italian. Absolutely. And that's how I would describe the chicken parm in there as Olive Garden coated, which doesn't mean it was the best chicken parm I ever had, but it was a chicken parm that I had. Well, I had all the components of cheese, chicken, breading. And say the word marinara. Exactly. We're in Italy as it were. My favorite drink. Isn't it just savory? What's your favorite drink? Marinara. He loves a Bloody Mary, don't you? I do. I mean, obviously. Clamato? No, I don't really do clams. You haven't lived. You don't do clams? I don't really do fish or like seafood. I don't like things that are in shells. Where are you from birth? Scranton, Pennsylvania. The electric city. Yeah. Yes. For coal. That's why we're there. That's why you're not around a lot of seafood. Yeah. No. It's landlocked. And what's your sign again? Scorpio. Oh, but you're a water sign. I know. You should love this stuff. I don't... I... Not you should. I don't know what I'm saying. You know that you're around family. I do know that. Scorpio Pisces. Scorpio. Scorpio. Scorpio. He's the Scorpio. What's your... I'm in November Scorpio. You're October? No, November. What day? 11. Sudi Green! You have the same birthday as our friend Sudi. Really? And Leonardo DiCaprio and Demi Moore. Wow, that's really talented people on the same day. Y'all have hardware on you. The three of you. You know who has the same birthday as me? Who? Eva Mendes. Ooh, that's a good one. Not bad. Not bad. And Penn Jillette. Penn? Penn? We love him. Who's Penn Jillette? You know Penn and Teller, they're sort of... No! I didn't know he had a last name. No, no, no. Teller's the other one. The one who doesn't speak. But Penn Gillette? Penn Gillette. And I don't know what Teller's first name is. Because Teller can't be his first name. Right, right. So Penn is his first name? Penn is his first name. I believe Penn Gillette is the one that speaks. Barb? Barb. Who speaks? And then do we know Teller's first name? Hold please. Sean's looking it up. What do I find out? Teller. Wow. Teller. Barely know her. So imagine this. This is how it is all the time with sports and Olympic facts. they have us hosting this podcast we don't know we shouldn't be here no you guys have to be here because this is where you'll gain the knowledge how else unless boots on the ground because I listened to the first season of the whole first season yes and I did not learn a thing no that's not the point but we're about to learn tell us first name Raymond oh I don't like that hey to all the Raymond's out there when's his birthday oh my god valentine's day valentine's day coming up yeah but you know what aquarius man not trustworthy well you know the signs quickly i just know aquarius men because i dated one and they know they're not trustworthy they marched to the beat of their own drummer oh i don't like any of those no aka do whatever they want yeah you are textbook scorpio do you think so absolutely You are... Jump high. Jump high. Be thin. Be thin. Ass like a weapon of mass destruction. Exactly. There you go. That is like the moon sign of that. Yeah. What if I named my child Rippon Lutz? I think you should. That's a good name, you have to admit. It's a family name. It could be a family name. It could be a family name. But the fact that Lutz... The fact that you've got your last name with someone else's last name in like a signature sort of move in figure skating. A marriage. A marriage. Wow. Wait, but that's not all. I feel like Bowen Yang is in his last weeks of not being a dog dad. And you've told us that you are a dog dad. And I use the expression dog dad sort of unwillingly because I don't know what... What would you call it? Do you call yourself a dog dad? I guess. I mean, what else are you going to say? Can you sort of... Can you take Bowen as your apprentice here? I can. I'm so sorry oh no why are you giving everything up you have two of these things I do and I do call them things Tony and Tracy Tony's four he's awesome and like she is not but then we love her I know obviously yes she's raised by me so it's like I have to take responsibility for some of the bad behavior yeah yeah yeah so you have gay son and thought daughter in these dogs A hundred percent. Okay. Yeah. And she's thought daughter. No, she's gay son. She's gay son. And then my son is thought daughter. That's beautiful. It's the best way for it to work out. No, it's so, gender's dead. Gender's dead. Yeah. This is Ryder Strong with a podcast called The Red Weather. In 1995, my neighbor, Anna Trainor, disappeared from a commune. It was nature and trees and praying. And drugs. Let's talk about it. What were highlights for you? What was your experience? Well, when they opened the crate, they put Mariah Carey on the little gurney and they pushed her out. We didn't see the gurney. Oh, okay. There is no gurney. We were probably on the other side because what we saw was what was several men helping her to the center and then out. Like, she didn't move a muscle. No. And she barely moved a muscle when she sang. Excuse your mouth. Excuse your mouth. It was... I love her. They wheeled her out to the middle. They place her in place. She does look like one of those presidential statues from Disneyland. and audio animatronics exactly and she was amazing yep they wheel her right back out and then by the time in the ceremony when they were like andora i was like there's a hundred percent chance she has like the micellar water makeup is off she's gone and she's halfway to la guard she was horizontal she came to the commissary here first she did no i'm saying like you know i was like that performance was powered by chicken. Yeah. Chicken part. Probably not. Probably not. No. Not no. Not no. We got to see the prompter view. Yeah, we were behind her. We were behind her. But the prompter text was in pink, which I must imagine is like a request from her. You know, I want to go on that journey with you, but I think maybe because the lights were pink. Okay. But the words did light up yellow like it was karaoke. So it was kind of like watching Mariah do Italian karaoke in a kind of gorgeous way. Gorgeous. It was phenomenal. I would have wanted nothing else. Okay, other highlights? Lowlights. The lowlights. Oh, we don't have to go there. No, I'll say that this was the first, like, they kept saying, like, the first distant games. Widespread. Widespread. Which I take issue with that. It's also crazy, first winter games out of COVID to then call this one the widespread. That's what I was saying! He, in fact, just said that. Did you? I did on an earlier episode. Scorpio. Concerned about health. incredibly odd choice of words. Love it. Let's keep it. Yeah, let's keep it. It's the first widespread Olympics. But you're staying here locally the whole time. Oh, yeah. You're spreading wine. Yes, locally. Did your husband come with you? No. No? Okay. No. Because Tracy's not good being left alone. Right. Okay, so again, it's the dog's fault. It is. Yeah. I know. But my only low light was like, because this is, as we've mentioned, the scientific community has called it the first widespread game. That this was the first time that like countries would walk out and it would just be like that girl in the Montclair coat. Exactly. Which I did like that. They were amazing. Yeah. We actually walked by the Italian one. So we had stepped out for a second and we walked by the Italian girly and she knew who she was. Yeah, she did. She had the energy of, yeah, I'm the Italian one. I mean, that's the one I think you'd want to be. Absolutely. If you had to choose a country, no offense to any of the world's nations. No, we're on their... Offense to some. Offense to some, but we're on their soil. Like, we have to pay respects. Yeah. What do we think of there being three or two body doubles for each person? Because we were cutting to three different locations. I see, like, it just, it made it feel like, is there enough people to pull this off? Right. Do you know what I mean? Not all the seats were filled. No. I was like, did some of them just not come? That can happen. Sure. What was your memory in Pyeongchang? Did you walk out? What was the memory? You walked out. So I did walk out. Come on. So I remember that they, in Korea, they did this in the Korean alphabet of how the countries were. So the United States came out relatively early. Because they probably go by America. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah. And like, I think, ah, it must be like at the beginning. Of course. As it should be. And I checked on that before I went. I was like, where is it? Okay. And so I remember that like, it was, there's just so much excitement. You're like all corralled together. It's amazing. Like this is the moment like, like you've been waiting for. And I remember that I like walked out and I'm just like looking around and, and just like beaming Cheshire Cat. And I look around and all the seats are like empty. No. And I was like, of course I make it to the Olympics that like nobody goes to. No, no, no. And then as the ceremony like went on, I was like, oh, no, this stadium is completely full. And those were the athlete seats. Oh, OK. So you should have been more in the moment. Yeah. Yeah. I was too. I should have been kind of like living like on the moment. I was too like. Yeah. Looking around. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You had done a drug. Absolutely. And it was... Disillusion. Disillusionment. Yeah, it's prescription. Of course. Powerful. I love D. I love D. But I want you to know that even though I did, like, in that moment think, like, nobody's here, I was like, Adam, play it off. Yeah. Yes. And I was just, like, smiling like I could see everybody. And then once I had settled and, like, my eyes had, like, adjusted to the low lights. Right. I was in it. I was, like, absolutely. Were you shivering? Were you cozy? Freezing. Okay. Korea was like the coldest place I've ever been. Last night wasn't so bad. No, last night was so, this was like, this is the ideal winter. Yes. Temperature. Have you gotten to try on the coat? Not the coat. Okay, we just tried on the coat. Oh, the coat. So this one's cute. For those of you just listening, we're wearing some of the Ralph Lauren officially Team USA duds. But we were just at the welcome experience. So it's like when the athletes come in to the Sheraton at the airport. They go through it. Did you have this experience? Yes. Yes. This is what I want to know. What was that? Because they were telling us like, oh, we'll play it. We'll surprise them with a video of people from home. Yeah. It's unreal. Yeah. Because I asked my friends who had been to the Olympics before, like, you know, what do you bring? Like, whatever. And they're like, just bring underwear. Okay. And just go. And I was like, that can't be the case. But you arrive and then you go through this thing called team processing. And in the team processing, they give you all of the capsule collection. Yes. They give you all of the gear and you truly don't need to bring anything else. You get this entire new wardrobe. It's unreal. I mean, we were rifling through the bags. We were exhausted trying to... Rifling. It was crazy. It was so much stuff. Have you heard about the new state-of-the-art jacket they made? The Nike jacket. Yes. I did wear the jacket that inflates. Yes. I felt like a packing cube. I felt like a packing cube. Adam, you've been asked already, I'm sure. Would you do Traders? I don't think so. Really? You'd be an amazing faithful. They haven't asked you? I, okay. So this was not like an offer, but I think like maybe for a season two or something. You're in the mix. It was like, would you ever want to do it? And I was like, Traders. I didn't know what it was. What is that? You said Traders. Excuse me. I'm against crime. And so I was like, no. Can I say something, though? Yeah. I saw Tara and Johnny eating breakfast today together. They looked victorious to me. We don't know anything? I don't know either. I asked Tara not to tell me. That's good. They kept fast to their NDA. I would also say if she's anything, it's not very good at the show. Stop! she's not very good at the show she's like off and wrong and now i think she's doing her thing of being like whatever i look cute which i think is a way to win the game we all saw dolores catania but then it's a strategy yeah i'm saying can walk away with this i think it's gonna be a very good month for tara and johnny i do i i knew like like i i just asked like did you have fun did you meet Portia because like I know Portia from Stars on Mars, not to brag, the amazing show that did go again. I have the magic touch. It got canceled. And but I love Portia's amazing. She was the first out of the show. I'll leave. I had such a good time. She was quickly banished. Wait, but here's the thing. They asked us to do season two too. If you do it, we'll do it. We're in this conditional deal with five other people. Would you guys do it? We've been asked. You're in a conditional deal with an entire cast. With an entire cast. We said this to Sarah Sherman. We've said this to many, many people at this point. But, I mean, you're saying you wouldn't do it. I just don't like the idea of murder. Sorry. You don't think it's something to joke about? It's not right. It's not right. After Charlize Theron's speech last night, I'm for peace. Oh, my God. Changed everything. why was she not that i'm like questioning it no but why was she here my my layover it felt like she was just sort of around this is my theory uh new president uh chairperson of the ioc uh christie coventry she looked like whitney rose charlie's yeah and she um i was i was saying that because this is she gave us for her to give a speech about peace and then to have played historically violent people is a reckoning meaningful a reckoning for her for her it was a reckoning oh my god if it was anything it was a reckoning i have to say i'm trying to i'm researching the file cabinets of my mind the secretaries are working as hard as they can up there to find even when she ever played an italian person i don't italian jobs who's the italian job she was in the italian job and that was a job in italy for her yeah and she got a passport and we We should celebrate her working. We absolutely should. I love Charlene. She's actually one of my faves. Remember when she played Megyn Kelly? Oh my God. Silence for 45 minutes. That's crazy. I forgot about that movie. Yeah. I blacked it out. A lot of us did. A lot of us did. It was kind of a kooky, crazy movie, huh? I, in this opening ceremony, there were a few things that I'm like, it is Italian because it's not. Yeah. Mariah Carey was another one who I was like Mariah Carey I get questions about this and then I realized the concept of the diva is of course Italian and she is the biggest one she's the biggest diva we have no absolutely but there were so many other things in there that I thought were so I had an Italian woman sitting next to me so i basically had like and she would like hold on to me and she like tell me what was going on that good to have she would say so the gag is yeah you'll never believe this uh and the suits that were walking out that were like green red and white are the last thing that giorgio armani is that why his picture was up that was a blooper That was by accident. Because I was like, oh. It was supposed to be mine. Oh. Those were Giorgio Armani's last group. Yes. Yes. Oh, wow. They were gorgeous. Yeah, they were gorgeous. Speaking of divas, I want you to explain to us the diva dumb of Alyssa Lu, Amber Glenn, and Isabel... Whoa, what's Isabel's last name? Levito. Levito, yes. She has Italian roots. She does have... She's doing like Sevilla Loren stuff. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I love it. Talk to us about the girlies. I would love nothing more. And I'd actually love to give you like a little background so that you know there are so many really just like stan worthy women in this event that like you're just, you need to know. Love it. Okay. I'm going to start international first. Let's go. There's a girl you need to know from Poland. Okay. Hold on to your seats. Okay. Her name is Katya Kurokova. Love it already. She's an amazing performer. Okay. Okay. Little background. Last season, she skated to Cats. Okay. Which song? all of them every single one that's what i was hoping for two hours yep great she skated in a costume that like she did a reveal in yes and it was like she's a white girl and it was a purple dress and underneath was the palest pink ever and the way she does the reveal is like in the middle she was like on the ice kind of like looking around and she was clawing at the ice i'm telling you you're gonna be you're gonna i love it like a cat we're gonna poland and then she grabbed the top of her dress and she pulled it down every time she did it. I thought she was taking her top off. Yeah. It was incredible. One of these days. So I hope maybe here, maybe here, maybe here at the Olympics. Yes. She also skated with cat ears. Work. And one competition, they fell off. No. Nothing more iconic than scrambling to find your ears. She was scrambling. Yeah. Wouldn't you? I can't hear anything. Yeah. It would be. It was insane. It was amazing. Oh, wow. You thought those were her functional ears? They could have been. They were. They were in that moment. She was that committed. I was in it. Yeah. Okay, that's beautiful. Okay, so she, what are we looking at this year for her? Does she have a shot at the top spot? No. Okay. Sorry, Katia. We just love the cats of it all. Yes. And she, like, she's just like, she's an amazing performer. Those are my favorite skaters. Yes. Yeah. And we'll get to the Americans. They're all, like, amazing performers. Yes. They're amazing. There's another skater. Her name is Lara Naki Gutman from Italy. she's like my favorite kind of like weird girl i love it okay so she did a program uh to the crow and she ends the program this is last year she ends the program on her chest first of all i'll let you know it's never good when a skater's on their chest no no except if you're laura gnocchi gutman okay you're listening doing the crow yeah she's amazing she also she skated to the Squid Games. Oh, perfect. And here, she's skating to Jaws. Like the Jaws theme song? That's my favorite song. And she does like fins like throughout. And she's, oh, she's amazing. Stop it. She embodies the shark. Yes. And she does like spins where she like puts her hair. Stop it. Oh, she's cracked. Yeah. She's amazing. Oh, I can't wait. Okay, that's incredible. Who else? International. So the Japanese team is like phenomenal. Sakamoto. Sakamoto. Look at you. I know of her. Yeah, she is phenomenal. You do know of her. I know. I know the name. I know the name. She is so, like, she's probably the best, like, overall skater. Okay. And just watching her in practice here, I'm starting to get chills in a way where it's like, I've never felt like she's performed so outwardly. She's, this is, could be, like, the biggest moment of her life. This could be amazing. So she could win gold. She absolutely. I think she's like the favorite aside from maybe like Amber Glenn or like Alyssa Liu, like one of the Americans. Yes, yes, yeah. There's Ami Nakai. She's 17 years old. She's going to like inspire like little girls all over the world to get onto the ice. She's adorable. She's amazing. Dark Horse. Dark Horse. And then there's Mona Chiba. Mona Chiba? Yeah. Oh, yeah. I didn't set her. Where's she from? Japan. Love. She's phenomenal. Okay. She's very good. like really well packaged. And she's great. So let's get to our bread and butter. So the Japanese girls are coming hard. Yes. But we're rooting for our American girlies. Of course. Who are they? What are they all about? So we have Isabel Lovito. We love her. I call her my daughter. Yes. Because she says things where you're like, why did she say that? Your daughter in media training. Exactly. Untrained. Or lack thereof. You never needed it. No. from New Jersey is explaining a lot. Yeah. The Scranton-New Jersey Alliance. And polished. Like so polished. Okay, great. She's so, and she's just so beautiful out on the ice. Love. Then we have Amber Glenn who is just phenomenal. She's so great. She just won her third national title in a row. Yes. She's the first woman to do that since Michelle Kwan. Yes. She has a triple axel. That's really her secret weapon against like all of these women is that she can do the triple axel. And the other ones have not, are they not attempting it? They're not attempting it. Okay, so there's only one skater that's attempting the triple axel. Of whom I've mentioned, yes. Yes. There are some other skaters in there. There's like the neutral athlete, Adelia Petrosian. She will be trying it. Great. She's got a caviar name. That's chic. Yeah. Petrosian. Mm-hmm. Okay. And then, uh-huh, uh-huh. And so, that's Amber's like secret weapon is that triple axel. Doesn't she do like the backward bend? Everybody does that. But she does it well. Coming from the authority. She does it well. She does it well. It's a widespread Olympics. And then Alyssa Liu. Yes. Now, Alyssa Liu is out of literally, I have to believe me, nowhere was the world champion at the Worlds last year. People were not checking for her? No. She'd just come back from retirement. Yes. Have we ever talked about, have we? We've never met. Talked about how she retired. How did that go down? Okay, she goes to the Olympics. She has like a good skate. She goes to the world championship. She medals. We're like, okay, great career ahead of her. You did it. She goes on Instagram. Oh, no. And the post starts, hey, I really had a good time with this skating thing. Does it matter what she said next? It was incredible. She gave hey with a lot of whys. She gave hey with a lot of whys. I think the words were, I'm misquoting, but she was like, hey. So yeah, I'm retiring. Yes. Basically. Completely. It was like written in the parking lot of a mall. Like it was so unceremonious and it was incredible. And then she was like, I want to come back. And so she had this like, see, hey, like she just, and usually people do like a press release or like it means so much, like something. And she was like, no, I'm going to do a carousel and I'm out of here. Authentic. Very. And so she comes back and she's really like on her own terms. Her dad was like really heavily involved in her career. she was like a teenage phenom right and i think that she was just like over that sort of parental pressure let's go with the dad let's go with the dad and she's like i just want to do this on my own and she starts to kind of start the season and she just is really good and solid and she makes it to the world championships and she just capitalizes on being there for the right reason she has this mindset of somebody who like, you only get this when you retire and you're out of it for a while. That like, this isn't the end all be all. I'm still like a whole person outside of this. So she has this attitude. And so she goes to the world championships and she just skates amazing. And there's some mistakes at the top and she just capitalizes on the moment. She's the world champion. Wow. And that's her secret weapon is that she won't be phased by any of the Olympic pressure. she's read let them by mel robbins yeah yes and she said let them fall let them fall let me fall them being me and uh she's she that's like that's her secret weapon is that like she's so steady and she's so mentally in the moment that she is she could just swipe she doesn't have the checkpoints no okay so now i feel like we've gotten the rundown on everybody or not everybody but those are those are some of my favorites so usually on this podcast what we do is i feel like this is the most sports that have ever been talked about on the podcast oh you're right big time you would be right thank you for bringing that it's like i felt like i i had an like an obligation a duty yes to just i want because you gonna go watch absolutely and this is this is really important i honestly do feel as a result of even just you doing that breakdown that we pretty prepared and more than we ever would have been You were the Italian woman next to you last night, grabbing you. Saying the gag is. You'll never believe this. I'm like from The Mojo. What is that? From Miss Mojo? Miss Mojo! It's the top six girls who are competing at the figure skating. Number six. I'm Coco Moco on TikTok. Coco Moco. So usually at this time, what we'll do is we'll give us a bronze, silver, and gold medal for the episode. We want to give you the opportunity to predict and project what you think the bronze, silver, and gold medals of this event are going to be. And remember, no one cares about what we say here. So it's low stakes. Actually, you know what? I think it's so close. Listen, I'm not afraid to give a prediction. Let's go. So I'm not spurting away from it. This is why you're good. But I do want to know what your predictions would be based on kind of what I've told you. Okay. Okay. Narratively, I think Alyssa is really compelling. Oh, gosh, this is hard. I'm going to go. You're going to go Kurokova first. Cat ears. I don't think she meddles. I think what happens with her is she becomes a star, does not medal. Yeah, right. I think that the bronze medal is going to the Japanese skater that you knew. Sakamoto. Sakamoto. I think she's taking bronze in a little bit of an upset. Okay. I think Amber Glenn is taking silver. Okay. And I think Isabeau is going to win gold. My eyes turn to stars. In a Sarah Hughes-esque upset. Wow. Okay. It is so weird that you're saying that. Because I do have... Listen, I think they're all... I know. There's so much energy draft. Yes. The Olympics have begun. I have been having this feeling. Premonition. Yes. Because she is... She's completely like out of her mind. Isabel? Yes. She has been FaceTiming me since we got here. She's never called me a day in her life. Wow. Non-stop calling me. She's like very... Something's happening. There's a jack. Yeah, there is something here. Wow. Oh my God, Matt. I'm going to smash that table. You're going to give birth. Yeah, I really like that prediction. Okay, that's my prediction. What do you think? I mean, I guess. Am I trying to get you to flip this table over? Yeah, I'll do it anyway. I'm gonna say I'm gonna say it's Miss Miss Jaws takes bronze Okay Naki Gutman Naki Gutman Miss Jaws Miss Jaws Laura Naki Gutman Yes Okay I can't tell you what it means to me that you are saying the three words Laura Naki Gutman after you because she deserves this She deserves to be said by Boneyang Yes We're fans of Laura Naki Gutman because she's doing literalism in Finn. I can't believe she's portraying a shark. Oh my god. She was portraying the Squid Games last year. Yeah, she's trying to be all for the sea. Don't find her in Scranton. Don't find her in Scranton. Or Jersey. I'm going to say Alyssa Silver. No, Alyssa Gold. And then Silver's going to be... I'm going to give it to Isabel. but I would love to see any of these women middle. I would too. And so my prediction is not, it's not based on like what I want. It's just kind of what I think. That's what we want. I think that Kari Sakamoto Gold, Amber Glenn, Silver, and then I think, let's go, I mean, it is so close. Let's just throw a name out there. Yeah, but what do you think is going to happen? Okay. What did I say? Sakamoto Gold, Glenn Silver. Let's say Alyssa Bronze. Fabulous. Yeah. And what do you make of, I'm sure you're being asked this a million times, is Minions guy good or bad for the sport? Oh, it's terrible. Because it does open up. But in the best way. But it does open up, it does start this conversation about opening up IP to Olympic skating, which is maybe a little bit of like a weird Pandora's box. Listen, I really admire somebody who's going out there knowing that they're doing something that's like completely camp. Yes. And for this Spanish skater, like the only thing that he can do is to like do something that's so out of the box, so crazy. Yes. Like the Minions. Like I've seen this program and it is an abomination. Yes. In the way that he wants it to be. absolutely yes yes well wait there's one thing yes can i tell you about the men yes please you guys have to go about the men i mean we have we have we have to do more content so like no no no no you we i'll make it quick this is the best part of our day this is the best part of our whole okay just a few men right we can't just talk about just a few men just a few good men a few good men what thoughts on ilia where are they the thoughts on ilia are that i think that he really wants to be like the super famous big like athlete yeah and i mean oh it's shady your thoughts no this is and this is part of the like endearing part about him is that i think he really wants to be this superstar so he does like things that are so out of the box right right and he does his own thing and he has spoken word that he spoke himself love in the free skate and so he takes these like daring chances and maybe when you first see it you're not like all the way there but i've had time to like let it settle and go into the grooves of my brain. Yeah. I'm Ilya Pilt. Yeah, you're Ilya Pilt. You're Piliad. No, Piliad. Piliad. But the best thing about Ilya, and this is like what I mean, it's where it's like, I gotta love this guy. Yeah. Quad God. Quad God. Yeah, we heard about this. Where did you think that name came from? Certainly from his legs, but apparently not. It's about the quadruple axle. Good call. I was excited about the quad God because I thought that meant we were gonna see some legs. Some ass. Some ass. Some legs, some more. Well, he you're out of luck and two rats he gave himself this nickname right oh it's very like that guy on survivor who called himself riz god you can't really call yourself that unless you can back it up and alia can back it up oh yeah the quadruple axle it's like four years ago if you asked anybody they would have said it's impossible and he's done it multiple times in competition he's the real deal man on the moon yeah you think he's gonna pull it off at the olympics yes yes what better stage This is the moment. Okay, so you think he's gold meddling. I do. I think that he has such a gap technically between everybody that he could even afford a few major mistakes. The way the scoring works is like when the base value of all of their jumps, and they can gain so many points on doing elements well. So if he makes a mistake on a few, he's trying maybe seven quadruple jumps. The most maybe anybody will do is like four or five. And he does them, the most important thing, really well. Yes. So he gets all of these extra points from the grade of execution. And the frequency. It's like Meryl Streep. Exactly. I was going to say. She could mess up all her lines. She could go, but basically she's going to slay the scene where her daughter dies. A hundred percent. And he's a performer. Yeah. Like he's. Your favorite thing. You're going to love it. Okay. Other guys. We have from France. Uh-huh. Adam Sjohimfa. Okay. Amazing. I love his skating. Love. He does it now. He does it where it's like you can feel the power. The men are not afraid to perform. Love. Yeah, I love that. They are so out there. Thank God. Amazing. For once. For once. I also love Mikhail Shiderov from Kazakhstan. Great. He's a mess. Love it. You love mess. Of course I do. You're Marie Kondo. I am. You love mess. You've sparked joy for us. You've sparked joy for us. Quickly, I do want to ask. I wanted to ask because Tara Lipinski was talking about this it's like because as you're talking about like these executions and like the elements and stuff like in terms of the scoring like Tara was talking about how like it is crazy conceptually like four minutes could change the course of things it could undo all the things that led up to this moment for you since you were like four you know like since whenever you started figure skating when did that moment happen for you where you like let that go finally like after you medaled I'm sure and no I think it actually like when I didn't make the Olympic team. I was an alternate in 2010. And then in 2014, I didn't make it. And I felt like that was sort of like the end of the road. Yeah. And then when I kind of like let it go, I had a lot of friends that were medalists or had won the Olympics. And it was just like, they were still the same people. And I feel like being able to let that go helped me get to the Olympics. And to be like really in the moment, I was like the oldest first time Olympian since the 1920s. You were 28. Yeah. Back of the barn. Geezer. Completely. So you were sort of Amber Glenn coded. A bit. Yeah. Queer. Yeah. Queer legend. Okay. I love that. I love that. This is an Alyssa Liu narrative where it's like, oh, now that you think it's behind you, that's when it starts to come. It's just you have a different perspective. And I was really grateful to be here. And I just could enjoy it more. Like there is nothing like the Olympics. And I remember like about to start my program. And I was like, this is the only program I've ever done where I'm almost sure Reese Witherspoon and Britney Spears are watching. Yes! And nothing gets you through a program like that. I guarantee you they were and they were very proud of you. Of course. Reese is obsessed. Well, thank you so much. This is our first Olympics. I truly am so, I feel so lucky that we get to do it with you, through you. Thank you for walking us through these gorgeous people. And we'll see who ended up being read about those medals. I hope I scream. The heat is on. That was a genuine, like war cry. Pulling for Isabeau, your daughter, in lack of media train-ness. Follow the show on the iHeartRadio app or your favorite podcast platform and watch on the NBC Sports YouTube channel. And watch and listen to every moment of the Winter Olympics and now through February 22nd on NBC and Peacock and on the iHeartRadio app. Well, we end every episode with a song. You get it.
