Summary

The episode concludes a three-part discussion with Patrik Simpson and Paul about Real Housewives drama, focusing on cast changes, feuds involving Kelly Dodd and Bethenny Frankel, and critiques of reality TV versus scripted content. The hosts discuss authenticity in entertainment, wealth-driven behavior, and the decline of the Housewives franchise formula.

Insights
  • Reality TV fatigue is driven by repetitive conflict formulas rather than genuine character journeys; audiences increasingly prefer scripted content with narrative depth and cinematographic care
  • Extreme wealth combined with excessive free time creates performative behavior and obsessive fixations on trivial matters, reducing quality of life and relationships
  • Authenticity and consistency in personal branding matters more than public approval; successful personalities maintain boundaries and don't compromise values for viewership
  • Cast composition and geographic authenticity significantly impact franchise viability; removing core cast members with established ties weakens narrative cohesion
  • Legal involvement in personal feuds escalates costs and drama without resolution; strategic disengagement is more effective than public retaliation
Trends
Shift from unscripted reality to prestige scripted television as preferred entertainment format among affluent audiencesDecline of traditional Housewives franchise model due to formulaic conflict and cast fatigueRise of authenticity-driven personal branding over manufactured drama in influencer and celebrity cultureWealth-driven behavioral patterns creating self-destructive cycles in high-net-worth individualsLegal weaponization of defamation and cyber-bullying claims in celebrity disputesPreference for single-relationship depth over large-group social events among high-profile individualsCreator-driven prestige television outperforming franchise-based reality content in critical receptionGeographic and cultural authenticity becoming key differentiator in reality TV franchise success

It's the end of our chat with Patrik and Paul. Why do I keep people for so long these days? Well because there's so much to talk about. Listen to part one, which aired this past Monday. Listen to part two, which aired this past Tuesday. We talked so much about Beverly Hills and like Dorit and Dorit and this and that and the cast is gonna change. No one believes me, but I'm sticking to it and RHO and Jay has apparently announced their new cast. We talk about that and Teresa and Melissa and all the newbies and you know who do I think I think three people are staying on Beverly Hills. Just three. I think everyone else is going. Yes, I have a lot to say today and you know we just got a lot more to say. We're gonna talk about, well I don't even want to get into what we're gonna talk about, but we talk about it all earlier. Jeff Lewis, oh my god, way to bury the lead. You know the boys are always so uncomfortable. Hi, Patrik, hi Paul. They're always so uncomfortable when I mention Jeff Lewis, but it's not them. I just look. They're not here because they're on JLL. I talk about JLL and all these things regardless of whether they're here. They happen to be here sometimes when things come up and there was this whole thing with Jeff and Oscar and Jeff having a toxic work environment. So that happened like an hour before they showed up for their interviews. Of course, I'm gonna talk about it. That was Monday. Anyway, I'm rambling, kick back, relax, enjoy this chat with Patrik and Paul and we pick. We're really just winding down our Beverly Hills topic and then I got something to say else. So kick back, relax and enjoy the end of this chat with Patrik and Paul. Happy Thursday. I hate to bring it back to Jeff Lewis as we move on. It's not about Jeff. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. It's not about Jeff. We're talking about Doreen. Okay, well, the cast is upset with her and she doesn't care about them and you think it's producers and I'm not sure I think Doreen might have a problem with lateness. I can't be friends with people that are like late also. It's too much at this age. It's like it's just too much drama and noise. Believe it or not, I'm very you've been out with me before. I'm very chill. I'm like whatever we walk into the restaurant, everyone knows you guys. We have to go to every table so everyone could say hi to Snow White. Fine. We sit down. We have our drink. Patrik and I want another drink. You don't. We say no. Then we leave. It's all good. It's all good, baby. I'm very low meat. It's like I don't like I can't deal with like, oh, I'll lead into two in the cars. I'm like, this is too much. I haven't even left the house. Let's just meet. Let's all have fun. Okay, anyway. Are you going to be in New York next week or next month? We'll be there April 16. Yes. At this rate, I'm fucking never leaving. I'm going to be here. We're going to. Are you in the city or are you in the I'm going to be in the city then I'm going to Hamptons, but I will be here when you're here. We're going to Jenner, David. Do you want to do it for real? Do you want to sublet your apartment while you're not there? Because maybe Taja wants to be able to have an apartment here in LA and then you from members only and then you can go back and forth and she can have space there with you and look and look where my apartment's located. Like it's near David, you're never going to do that. David's never going to have somebody stand. No, my LA place I care about less. I mean, just in terms of, you know, but very conveniently located for Taja. Um, if you know what I'm saying, anyway, can I just it's not about Jeff, but here's the thing. Now my I'm not putting myself in the middle of this. We already did it. My team, my legal team is dealing with this. So just I'm not going to talk a lot about Kelly Dodd. There is a police report. I mean, we've already exposed this on our show. You know, she's filed a police report against the doctor. It's not being taken seriously by the police, it seems. But my point is, have you checked on your friend Kelly Dodd because she's fucking unraveling? Oh, really? It's not even a, I'm not even being mean. She'll probably yelling, you guys. Now she says she feels bad. She's great. We checked on her. We said hello. We invited her to our fashion show. I hope so. I hope she's okay. She's coming unraveled. She's talking about the terrorists are after her now. And that's why she's not going to speak about me anymore. Not because my lawyer's really serious, but apparently now she feels sorry for me. So I feel sorry for myself too. If I had a psycho woman saying, these, these, these, does defamation per se and cyber bullying and cyber, I would feel so, I, she's right. She's really right a lot this Kelly Dodd. My voice, I don't really like to listen to it either. And I feel sorry for myself too. If I had to endure what I've gone through with her for years and years, I'm okay. I'm coming out the other side, but it's been hard. So there is the police report. We've already covered that against the doctor. We've, my lawyer broke down how serious it is, but I just wanted to make sure you checked on her because it seems to me like. Do you think the doctor wants to be, do you think the doctor wants to be a housewife? That's why she's doing all this stuff. Like, I, like I work, I'm here. I do surgery. I'm double board certified. I'm, I mean, she's got a great resume. She's very articulate. She's really beautiful. And when I was driving LeBray at the other day, I saw her billboard. I saw. I saw. And I'm like, but why do you want to go after another person as an example? And I mean, I don't believe in that. Why do you want to go? I have never personally, I've never gone after another person because the thing is, when we countersuit Kelly Dodd, we're going to implot, we're going to employ the New York state and California anti slap statutes, which there's very big malice and everything she says. There's never been malice anything I say against Kelly ever. So I don't believe in ever going after another person either. I report the news here. I feel like she's coming unraveled. I'm concerned. But I agree this feud, I'm not disagreeing with you. I don't think the doctor doesn't mind the fame in the billboard. I saw the billboard and you know, there's a lot going on. I mean, I don't, I don't blame her. But at the same time, I feel like, what is it that you feel the righteousness of that you have to go against someone you don't even know? If she is this irrelevant to you. And Kelly is a beautiful person. I mean, I, we have a beautiful friendship and friendship aside, she has her public persona. Right. And if this person is going after someone she doesn't even know she ain't coming after me anymore, because she sees what's actually really going to happen. I think she actually understands that, but go on. But there is not about me. They do have a thing, the doctor and her. That's my point. I don't understand. That's toxic. And if the dog, it is, it is toxic. And if the doctor, I wish they could just put their differences aside. I mean, it's like, I want to get along, call each other up and say, you know what, I love this moment. It was great while it lasted, but let's lay off. But the thing is, well, a lot of people say she should do that with me. The thing is, that's my whole point. I won't live that way. I'm not, I've never clapped back at Kelly. Again, my lawyer is now involved and we have a new legal series here, but I don't believe in clapping back. I'm not, there's, that's no way to live. I could not agree with you more. Let's go. I just think that's why I was bringing it up that she seems to be unraveling and it seems like there's always angst in her life and I just wanted to know if you've checked if you say she's great then I'm happy to hear that Julie. Well, I don't wish harm on anyone. I think I think she's doing great but I'm about to jump on the call and talk to her again and go Kelly. I don't know people are sending me things she says that I mean I don't know if this is like a distraction because she's tries to act tough and now you know we have a real lawyer involved but she says that the terrorists are after her. I don't know my lawyer was like I haven't seen I haven't seen I just saw like one or two clips that he showed me of the doctor doing her makeup and talking. The doctor is it's contentious. I wish them both the best to lock. I want no part of it. Check on her. Check on her and make sure she's okay. Miss Leventhal. You're so concerned. I would never wish harm upon Miss Leventhal. I mean she is that's gotta be a lot of things to always be angry. Forget about me. I could be hit by a car. You know I mean also if I do get hit by a car again I wouldn't go so far as to anger my attorney because he's a psycho but it's no way to live. Like you guys get it. Like I don't live like that. I don't I don't I'm not I would never listen. I am being in a feud with anyone because you'll lose. Like nothing gets in my mind. I just maybe you can help her. The real sad thing is something like this that's so contentious there's no winners. Do all people are going to win are the attorneys. I don't know if they're going to go out to lunch or dinner but a more power to everyone. I think they should because they should actually they should because Kelly is a remarkably beautiful human being. It's really good. You know what when when you have a magnifying glass and then things get really like extremely enlarged the noise in the periphery becomes so much louder than it needs to be and then when you really consider just the basics of what this is it's like you know what why are you talking to me like that. You don't even know what I'm going through. Like it's just the back and forth and all this started because of my friend Jill Zarin. That's the crazy thing. So good luck to both of them. Did I mean honestly did Jill Zarin did anybody ask her the question for her to be able to offer an opinion. Why wouldn't somebody tell her why would you film something like that. What was she saying. Like we're not. It's not. Well I believe when it was happening her daughter Allie and Gary said just please put the phone down. Look to her. This is all I have to say to Jill. I mean I've heard from Jill but here's the thing. If this show kind of I'm not wishing anyone harm or just saying if you're upset now Jill this show could come out. It could have a season and then it could ride off into the sunset. I'm not in other words I don't wish anyone harm. I love the way and I'm not sure this show is going to be such a mega success for E. Let's let's wait and see if it's going to last. I mean the show has to do well to come back past the season. I don't know. I love the fact I love the fact that they never told Derrinda to begin with and then now Derrinda took over for. But this is where the whole show. This is why I am like no longer interested in the show. Because I've said this before everybody has a tie to Palm Beach except Luan. That's how it started. Everyone says the pie right. I'm talking like I'm not talking fucking 12 decades ago. Right now Luan lives four blocks from me in a place called Sag Harbor. That's she Luan loves Sag Harbor as much as I do. We love it. It is our home. She was in Boat of the Palm and that's okay because everyone else is there and she's going to go visit. It made sense to me. Now that Jill is gone and now we have Derrinda who has no ties to Palm. Now we have two people that don't really have a tie to Palm Beach. The show is different for me. Now it's two friends visiting. I know I'm getting hung up on such. Maybe it's like I know too much but three of them have ties to Palm Beach. Kelly, Ramona and Sonia and then the other two don't know. That's fine. We could still watch it. But now it's like it loses something for me. It's just for me. It does by substituting Derrinda for Jill. I mean also Jill is, people aren't going to understand this but she is a kind person. Like Jill is Jill. She's an authentic person. I think Derrinda is a monster. I think she's mean. So there's also that. I would personally rather watch Jill than Derrinda but it also just, I don't know but I wish the show. I'm going to go back to the thing I said in the very beginning. Tell me. The reason that I don't think this bachelor, what is it? What is it? The golden life? It's golden life. It's not going to work is because it's all going to be very produced. Isn't this the Betty White show, Golden Girls in Florida? Pretty much. And they're older than the Golden Girls were. The Golden Girls were like 53 or something. That's those were their ages on the characters. I mean, God, we really are keeping ourselves together these days compared to the 80s honey. My, my, my. If this were the 80s, imagine what we would look like. And let's be honest, if it wasn't for the success of Palm Beach members only, this would never have been an idea. I've said this 100 times. That is 100% correct. My favorite is still Taja. Oh, and Taja's on undressed with Paul and Patrick this week. Because that's why she's your favorite. We dropped a copy. I'll tell you, I'll tell you why because she's genuinely, she's just her, she's a very unapologetically authentic human that has come with challenges, accepts them for what they are, doesn't put them underneath the carpet to put portray a different side to her and lives her authentic way of being runs a successful business. Has a beautiful relationship with the baby father has the parents. Her mom is. Does he help her out the baby father to change the chain? You know what I'm saying? Well, I mean, what I love about Taja is that is that better than Dorit's version of what the baby's father is, who's getting her kicked out. Yes. Yes. I didn't even see by that. I'd like a rich baby father too. I mean, I don't want to fucking kid. I'll have a kid if I can have money and then the kid can stay over there with an Annie. Sure. Yeah, but she's got a successful business. She's not reliant on his money. I spoke to her back before all of this. She would invite me to her. No, she's the real deal. Unapologetically, she doesn't play to the camera. She just, and that's my experience. She doesn't edit herself. So she's just who she is in real life. I think she is. That you get to see her on television. So she's not marrying somebody just because it's a good storyline. She's not getting enhancements because it sounds like a thing to do at the moment. She's not being friends with someone because that's where the story is going to go. It has nothing to do with that. She's just herself. She's not moving. And that's exciting. That that's the part that you want to watch. I wish they captured. We were invited to her premiere party. I wish they captured the premiere party. I saw pictures of it and videos. It was a beautiful event. How do you get 400 people, 500 people under one roof? And the one drama that there is is the lady with the wig. I'm like, okay, lady, relax. Like, you know, I love me some girl. She makes me laugh. May I say something? This is a paid message from GoFundMe. My name is Ashley Kane. It's making room for all my spring stuff because I love an organized closet and I hate clutter. And that's why I love quints. Quints make such high quality, everyday essentials. And I can get so many different types of wares out of the same pieces. I just stacked up on their European linen pants. They fit so well. They come in so many different colors. My favorite is this cool chambray blue. I got a matching shirt. I got them in basically every color they have. There's black, olive. The fabric is so lightweight. It's breathable. It's comfortable. And I love that I could wear them to like a fancy or dinner. But they're also really cool for like hanging out on a casual Saturday. And the best thing about quints is that their prices are 50 to 60% less than similar brands. And I have stuff in my closet from quints from a few seasons ago. The stuff is still in style and it's still in great shape. So refresh your wardrobe with quints. Go to quints.com slash velvet rope for free shipping and 365 day returns. Now available in Canada too. Well, let me tell you something that Bethany Frankle, she ain't doing that much better. She's obsessed. This Bethany is up. She gets on a tangent and she runs man. Is this a rich, is this a rich people thing? This is a rich people thing. It's a rich people thing or a rich people. No, it's a rich people thing. An entitlement thing that I need to share with the world what I really feel deep inside because I think you give a shit. Which one it is now in my Hamptons place the condo these people they think they they they literally I am not exaggerating they get in the pool. There are World War three over whether the pool is like 81 degrees or 82 I am I'm not exaggerating. They go to the concierge. They complain this one turns it there's wars over one fucking degree. The pool is either two cultures. There's so much more. You know what it's called? It's called too much fucking time and too much money on your hands. This is why I like scripted to you. I love scripted to you. Oh, Bethany, I don't know if you saw it. It was interesting. She bought this. This is like a week or two ago. She bought this thing that like picks up your face. Okay, picks up your face and the thing it looks like cupping. I saw her doing something on. Yeah, like I don't know if you had cupping. I had cupping when I was in China. The shit leaves those big marks. But then I was like, I'm going to come home from China. Like this is never going to go away. Then it goes away. But it's a forever back when I used to travel and have a fucking life before I started this fucking podcast and everyone's blood from my fucking artery. Any 24 hours a fucking day. But yeah, she was picking up her faith. I used to travel. I used to have a life, guys. You can always go back to law, David. Please pass. She has she was picking up her face with a thing and it was it had and it so it's sharp. I mean, it's a glass and it shard her face. And then afterwards she was doing the test and banging on the marble and being like, now I'm trying to break it to see if it breaks and stop breaking the nurse that sent it to her, of course, did not reach out because legally we can't because that's not admit, you know, and she was very monotone, but Bethes decided not to sue. And she just but she's not backing down. She wants everyone to know this is like a very scary product. I agree. I would not put any glass on one space, but it fucking caught it. But she is just we were using it the wrong way. Right. Like if there was a lot of let's not let's not assume this Franco would win. Right. I mean, weeks later, we're still talking about this. She's still talking about that she she's she's like, here's why I would never do the golden life. And now there's this other thing that just came out, bitch, you weren't asked. Like, I love Bethany, but I'm just saying she gets obsessed. She gets on one topic and I find it very amusing. But I understand why people who don't like Bethany, I get it because she really I mean, this this she's doing videos hashtag scarface. It's kind of funny. You're laughing. Oh, my God. So it's not bad. So this is too much time on their hands. It's rich. It's what happens. It's what happens when you are wealthy and you have too much time on your hands. Yes. Yes. You just so my problem is I don't have that luxury because I'm sewing while I'm on TikTok. This is true. That is your problem. Endless amounts of money. You have a little bit of a desire for fame and Bethany she has fame, but a little bit of the public opinion weighing in that plays some part into it. Mostly it's just having way too much money. Yep. And too much time on your hands. Yep. That is it has to be because those of us that are just busy in life just don't have time for this nonsense. I don't and I think that's why I'm annoyed every time they put those brilliant women together on a table and then they go, Oh, you said this. No, you said that you said this and oh, you need to acknowledge that. I'm like, Oh, my God, there are real issues in life. This isn't it. And this is can't be my escape to be this. I can't. I just can't. I say scripted. I am right there. I loved all fair. I'm not watching love story yet. But everybody says I would love it. You know, we watched last night, why the Netflix premiere? What was it called? Something very bad is going to happen. Who's in that was anybody that shit crazy all over the place. But I'll tell you who's in my God. And I analyze this after we saw it. I didn't know anything about the show. Yeah, brilliant actors. Amazing. But I'll tell you something. The person that created the show. This is their first time out. Holly Z boss. Haley because very young. Yeah, they wrote this next shonda rhymes next right. Yes, they did this about four years ago. It took that long for them to be able to kind of put it together. She got the Duffer brother involved. But I'll tell you all plays that's about because it is their first go round. Yeah, the energy, the intensity, the detail and the creativity that they brought. Yeah, was so much more exciting than the regular, the mill of the housewife franchise having the formula when everyone's checked out, getting a paycheck, just trying to create whatever little singular drama that they think the public really wants to see is. And there's more to life than just that kind of toxic negative drama. There's life drama that's so exciting to explore to see how you resolve. There's beautiful moments in life to know that two people can care about each other in a deeper way than they did before. There's so many other ways to be able to showcase things, right? So when you look, when you watch the show, you see even the band aid placement was exciting. The close choices. Band aid placement really. Yeah, because because it says a story while in other in other effects, it's a band aid. No, there's there's a story to it, the details, the angles of the way shot and some cinematography. Beautiful. Maybe other people are like, well, you got one camera to the right, one camera to the left and one one panel in the middle, the drone shots. I mean, all just the cool stuff. It just it was bringing you back. Yeah, it was bringing you back to a place where you realize that somebody really cared for me to sit here for an hour to watch and go on a journey with you. I would love a good scripted. And that's what's happened. I think that you know, that's what's missing from the Housewives franchise. You don't they're not taking us on a journey anymore. No, they're not. I listen, honey, I've been bored since 2021, 2022. I'm bored. But these people and by that, I mean the most wonderful people in the world because they pay for the coffee that I'm drinking. They don't want to they don't want to hear about my life. They don't want to hear about me talk about Kim Kardashian. They want nothing from me. They want just me to open my artery and just talk Bravo, Bravo, fucking Bravo. Well, wait a minute. It's the last time I talked to you. Is there anybody else on the list where they they're no longer your friend? Shockingly, you know, we mentioned some undesirables here today, or a couple two episodes ago at this point. Have I made any more enemies since you were here in the public eye? No, no. Good job. This is not worthy. I recently had Valley to talk about in a couple weeks. The Valley I've recently had Renee and Jen Graziano on separately the mob wives, girls they love Renee on last week. Renee is I've known Renee forever. She is just wonderful. See, she's authentic. Yeah. Yeah. She's the mob wife. Yeah. She she's mob family. Yeah, she's a leader. Nobody knew has hated me guys. Listeners, just remember your goal in life is not to get people to like you when you're on your deathbed, especially after you pass. You'll be a distant memory. People get over the dead so quickly. It's so sad. It really is sad. So my goal here, your goal, everyone listening's goal should not be to appease those around you. And I will be pleasant to everyone, but I will not make myself smaller to help deal with your insecurities or let you feel. So if you were going to have a housewife tagline, what would it be? I'm not going to make myself smaller, but your insecurity. Now, I already have my tagline. If you like what I'm saying, keep listening. If not, keep listening. Drop the bike. That is my behind the velvet rope housewives tagline. I don't give a fuck. Scratch it. Our tagline will always be Beverly Hills, even though we just bought in West Hollywood. It's true. I mean, you guys are West Hollywood boys. Your zip code does not identify. Listen, next week or whenever next month, excuse me, which is like a few days when you're here, let's really do a dinner. I don't know what area you're staying in, but I mean, sounds like it's got to be somewhere somewhat close by New York. So New York City. Okay. Hi. I think we're going to stay a couple of days in the Grand Hyatt again, right? Grand Hyatt, I think. Midtown-ish. Yeah. Yeah, we like that. Across the street, from Cipriani. Do that. Okay. Well, I mean, I'm near Central Park, darling, so that's not far. So we'll do this. We'll have a dinner. Patrik and I will have a nice beverage, all the nice martini. You can have your mocktail or your tea, whatever it is that you drink these days. I'll be drinking alcohol. Martini with you, David. My tap water with two cubes of iced lemon and a straw. Oh, my gosh. I don't drink often, but when I go out to dinner or a social function, I think I'm socially awkward. I think I need a drink to just deal with the public. I think you enjoy a drink when you feel safe and at ease with the company you're with. Is that probably because you're not being judged, you're not performing, you're not trying to be, you're just unwinding. I gotta tell you. We had fun. And this is not meant to sound obnoxious on my part or egotistical. It's just the opposite. The older you get, your circle gets so small that I have to tell you I will not sit at a dinner with people unless I feel completely comfortable. I'm not a micromanager. I don't have to say why are you bringing a third person and who is that? I'm not like that, but I just won't say yes to events. My friends know this. One of my good friends is having her big birthday dinner. She does it every year, next few weeks. Big birthday. We're having like 20, 30 people. Honey, you know I'm not being there. Now I'm taking you out. I'm gonna take you out one on one. You're gonna get two dinners out of this. You and me. We're gonna get a nice fancy dinner from Uncle David, but you know I'm not sitting at a dinner with 15. It's just not my thing. I'm just being authentic to myself. I'm not. I just don't do that. I'm not doing that with this one because you know, listen, I'll fucking look around and hate most of the people here. It's nothing personal. It's really not. Or they'll hate you. Yes, yes, yes. They will probably hate me too. But you can't go. You can't go to your friend's dinner thinking that way. So you, but you should go because because showing up for your friend is. Listen, are listen, taking her out to a lovely dinner one on one and having some nice conversation. That's because you want all the attention to yourself. The oxygen out of the end of the friend. And go, it's all about me. People wear me. They wear me down. They wear me down. So I will love to go to dinner with you two lovely ladies. Plug everything before we say goodbye. Plug it all. Yes.
