•May 12, 202619 days agoSummary
Dude Perfect members Tyler, Cody, and Garrett discuss their new middle-grade novel series 'Operation Trick Shot,' their new outdoor-focused YouTube channel, and the evolution of their brand from backyard trick shots to a multi-platform entertainment company. They emphasize the importance of getting kids outside and reading, while sharing insights about faith, family, and building a sustainable creative business over 17 years.
Insights
- Kids are reading significantly less than previous generations, creating an opportunity for entertainment brands to bridge reading and visual content through book series tied to established audiences
- Authentic outdoor experiences and shared missions create stronger family bonds through neurochemical responses (vasopressin) than passive digital consumption
- Successful content creators should prioritize genuine relationships with collaborators and guests rather than transactional 'use' of their platform or celebrity connections
- Faith and shared values are foundational to long-term team cohesion and platform sustainability, not just financial success or audience metrics
- Generational shift: kids lack experiential outdoor play that previous generations took for granted, creating demand for content that models and encourages outdoor family activities
Trends

I love that! Welcome to the 1000 hours outside podcast. My name is Jeannie Erdson, the founder of 1000 hours outside and I am so thrilled that three members of Do Perfect are here today, Tyler, Kobe and Garrett. Welcome to the three of you. What's up, Jeannie? How are you? I'm good. You're here. Oh yeah, I gotta get some more energy. Get some juice I needed today. I love your podcast studio. I have to tell you a story. So we are huge fans. We've been a fans for a very long time. You got us through COVID. Our kids started these trick shot videos called Lockdown Kids. I'm sure you hear that a lot. But our kids are huge fans and I was coming down to Round Rock, Texas to speak in an event and it was like right around the time of kids' birthdays and we're feeling you know as a parent you're like oh darn we're not home and so they're such fans and we came like weird stalkers to Frisco and stood outside at like eight in the morning and we got to meet the twins. Let's go! It was so cool. I'm really glad it was me. I'm really glad it was me. That's exciting. I'm really excited to hear that. And then Sparky came out. Everyone was so kind and said happy birthday and like gave shirts. Incredible. He's a good one. He's a real one that Spark. We've been fans for such a long time. I'm like we've got all the merchandise here. I'm like I've got hoodies. I got wrist bands. I got the books. So we're gonna be talking about something incredibly cool. You have a middle grades novel coming out which is fantastic. It's like reading is so important for kids. It helps to get their minds going and it has just completely vanished. You know the kids are not reading hardly at all and you even had interviewed a Gen Z. He was like haven't read anything since sixth grade. The last book I read was Hatchet. Sounds like Ty. Yeah. I heard that one. Yeah that was on your podcast. It was Jackson. When you were learning all of the Gen Z slang and it was like Cindy and you were like it was something about we're gonna steal Cindy. It was like a great episode. It was like one of the first couple. But anyway no kids are reading hardly and it really matters for their development. So can you tell us about this new book that you have coming out. It is a first of a series. It is a book series. This is Do Perfect Plus Panda Operation Trick Shot. What a tee up. Unbelievable. First of all I want to say big fans of the mission of what you guys are doing in a thousand hours. I just think spending a thousand hours outside together as a family is an incredible thing to shoot for. We've been talking about it a lot here. I'm doing it right now. Really? Yeah. Well right now you're inside. No I meant like my family is doing a thousand hours outside. I just want you to know I think it's incredibly awesome. So thank you again for having us on. Yeah Operation Trick Shot we're super excited. This has been a dream of Do Perfects for a long time. We all have kids. Gert's are actually the oldest. Your oldest Gareth is 10. 11. 11. I know. I have a newborn coming in June so we're full of the spectrum here but we have wanted to do a book series forever and just like you talked about there other than Thai we grew up reading books like Boxcar Children, Hardy Boys, so many good series when we were kids and we wanted to come out with something that families could trust everything that was in every one of those books and that the kids would just have an absolute blast reading. So this one is like Sports Meet Secret Agent Twist and I think families are going to really enjoy it. Okay. Do you know I read it? I got to read it. I got an advanced copy. Did you really? Yes. What did you think? I loved it. It's a total page turner. There's so many like little plot twists like you're talking about how you know how does everybody get their nickname and this is a story where the this is you as eighth graders. So it covers some of the questions people might have. Like is it hard to come up with content? So that's one of the things that you talk about like there's a lot of pressure there to come up with the content. But then there's all this other stuff about feeling unseen. Like these are great themes to talk about in your family. So in the book, Corey, you know, is a twin and he's like feeling a little unseen. There's like a moral dilemma. Do you do something bad if there's a good cause? And really the whole mission of the book is to save play. Yes. I'm unfortunate. You've got summary by the way. I hasn't read it yet. So you just locked in. How does it end? How does it finish? Tell me the last page. Thank you very much. I was just gonna say Corey, my brother, he wrote a book early on and Dude Perfect. So he's dialed in. He's been very involved. Garrett's wife. Look at Jenny. Jenny. Yeah. Jenny, you're welcome at our office or on our podcast anytime. You're deep. You're deep. I love it. Yeah. So Corey's an author. Garrett's wife wrote Good Night, Dude Perfect. Tyler and I have written nothing. I haven't either. No, no. I guess technically Garrett has. I was just giving you credit by Mary. Yeah. But it is. That was a great summary and I read the book to my four year old and we had a blast reading it together. So I am really, really excited about it. Yeah. And it's a series. So there's already another one in the works. Like when you, here's how it ends, Tyler. It ends by teasing the next one. There you go. Well, good is great. I better get started. Yeah, it is good. The next one's called Match Day Mayhem. There is really a lot of research about kids and reading. I've interviewed a bunch of guests over the past year where they talk about how the kids books, they have far vast superior vocabulary in them than everyday language, you know, your conversations that that you have. Here's one reading exposes children to more facts into a broader vocabulary than virtually any other activity and people who read for pleasure enjoy cognitive benefits throughout their lifetime. I'm Mrs. Fantastic. I'm so excited. So I loved it. It's coming out. And by the time this show goes live, you will be able to get a copy of it. Can you talk about this new ish? So it's the podcast is new ish since the fall. Yeah. Yeah. And so is this outdoor channel. Okay, let me read it. All right. This is what you say. Okay. We go outside so that you'll want to see now. Now you're talking in my lane, okay, which that you said something there that explains my limited vocabulary in my low cognitive power. Yeah, because I didn't do a lot of reading the last book you read was the hatch. However, I was outdoors a lot. That lends us to D.D. Outdoor. And yes, this is something that we've talked about for a very, very long time. Obviously, do perfect main channel has been around will be 17 years in April. And so for us to be able to launch something new like the outdoor channel was just a really cool opportunity for me personally to do something that I'm super passionate about that I love. But also, I think it provides just kind of a another platform for people who kind of grew up with us in the beginning and are now dads or a little bit older and have kids of their own. And so it kind of brought back and like recaptured part of the dude, perfect audience that has kind of grown up with us. Yep. And our whole goal through that, like the main channel and like everything else we do is to be able to not only bring families together, but also like you to get them outside and get them doing activities together. And so I was fortunate enough to grow up doing a bunch of that stuff outside of my dad. Those are my fondest memories that I have as a kid was just being in the outdoors, whether it was hunting, camping or fishing and just being outside with the people that you love. And so that's kind of the whole mission of the D.P. Outdoor stuff and we're having a blast doing it. And it's been it's been awesome. We're four videos in now and we have a ton of fun doing it obviously. So it's been it's been super, super exciting for me. I got choked up at the end of the last one. You know, I think something about the videos that's really capturing and really about what all all that you do, which is like having airsoft battles with your wives is like real life living. And I had a podcast that just launched today. Today actually is our 750th episode. Wow. And I didn't do anything special. I woke up this morning and was like, I probably should have made a graphic, but I was like, Oh, I'm talking to the dude. Perfect guys. But the guy that came on his name is Dr. Arthur Brooks. And he talks about how we just don't like live anymore. We don't go do stuff. And I learned about this chemical. It's called vasopressin. And it's like how when you're on mission together, like in the children's book, they're on mission to save the gym, you know, for the local kids so they can play when you're on mission together, you know, you're doing all this stuff. It like bonds you all the things that you've done together, right? And all the things that you brought your wives in on. And if people copy that. So the latest outdoor video is catching these lobsters and one of my favorite things I've ever seen, Tyler, is when you go, I got one. You know, and it's like, who as an adult gets to have feelings like that. And they come from God's creation. Yeah. Like he still has hide and seek for adults. Yeah. Yeah. That was a very genuine moment for me because that was a struggle to get the very first one. And like you said, we were all trying to do it together. And there was a lot of that team element, but there is something special about whatever it is, but having that common goal, but doing it with people that you love. And then to be able to do it in a space like the outdoors, especially a place like that where we were at doing the lobster diving just makes it all that much more special. But yeah, I couldn't, couldn't agree more. Having that common goal, that common mission and being able to enjoy it with others is what makes it, you know, so special for us. Yeah. You wrapped it up and you said, this is a shared mission of bringing families and friends outdoors together, but also a common mission of using this platform to glorify Christ together. And then you had a sunset raking. So I just, I love that. It's fantastic. It just reminds you, there's so much to do out there. It's like, you're never going to age out. There's always going to be something different. You can always adventure as your kids get older and older, there's more and more to do. As we move towards summer, everything starts to look a little different. The schedule loosens up. There's more time outside, more travel, more life happening. And that's a really good thing, but it can make consistency a little harder to maintain. Having something flexible that supports learning through those changing rhythms can make a big difference. And that's where IXL fits in so well. IXL is an award winning online learning platform offering interactive practice in math, language, arts, science and social studies from pre-K through 12th grade. It's called the inner ring CS Lewis talked about it. And it was like how you kind of like always want to rub shoulders like with a little bit more famous people and a little bit more famous people. And he basically was saying, like, as you go in on the rings, you're never actually going to get there. There's always going to be like another person. But I kind of feel like maybe you've hit the inner circle. Like I was curious if there's anyone that you're like, oh, we wish we could meet them, but we haven't yet. So you did this battle against the Savannah bananas, which you can't even get tickets to their stuff. So Garrett, I learned in that video that you are left footed. Is that right? Yeah. Left footed. Left footed. So can you talk about like, are there still people that you're like, oh, you know, I wish we could meet them or have you kind of like hit the pinnacle? Um, it was a big one. Check in your, your's off the list today. Yeah. I, you know, we've got to, we're super blessed and, you know, we've got to meet like just growing up as like sports fans and, and things like that. It's like, man, like I just even getting to go to events. Was like crazy big deal bucket list and then getting like film videos and bring them in. And you know, we were just, uh, the world baseball classic was just on and, uh, we had Bobby Whit Jr. who's, you know, he's just kind of a kid still, which is so crazy. Uh, but he was sitting right where Ty is and we got to interview him and it's just, it's so cool to be able to like just talk to these people that we look up to, even if they're younger than us because they've accomplished so many things in their life. And, um, yeah, we're just super blessed. Like, I don't think we've met everyone we've ever wanted to meet. Like I definitely, yeah. Jackie Chan is still out there. Yeah. You want to meet Jackie Chan? Yep. You want to film a Shanghai noon kind of fight scene? I want the, the, whatever the third one's called. Yeah. Dryquil to Shanghai noon. Uh, but it's been cool. Yeah. Like the inner circle has, I guess that is a fascinating, I've never heard it that way. I see a smart guy. Yeah, he is probably right. He's really honest with stuff. I was just going to say, uh, there's a, there's a mentor that we all love that I was talking to them recently and they were just encouraging us like exactly what he just said. They were like, Hey, I know y'all continue to have these opportunities. They're going to have even more of them as the podcast comes out. I would just encourage you guys and we've taken this to heart. Like don't use these celebrities like love on them, right? Because people, people are asking them for things and trying to use them every chance they get. And I was that, that really hit home with me. And so I'm trying to remember that each time we have an opportunity to reach shoulders with somebody that I have personally put up on a pedestal and looked up to. Yeah. I love it. What a story. Okay. So I've seen some of the early videos because we had friends that were huge fans and like this was a long time ago. They showed us. So we watched some of the earlier ones that are like in the backyard. Can you talk about this is starting in 2007. Can you talk about like, I can hardly even remember back then social media changed so fast at what point where people realizing this could be a career, not just for one person, but can support five people. Certainly not us. 2014. Yeah. 2009 was our first year. YouTube came out in 2007. So we were two years into YouTube even being a thing. We put out the first video, really had no intention of creating a brand or a business of any kind. Just thought, Hey, this would be a fun video. Put out to see how many views we can get. Did it, got a bunch of views. And we thought, okay, well, that was it. That was, that was kind of cool. And then sooner or later we thought, okay, well, well, hey, what if we, you know, took this out somewhere else and went and did it at the ranch and did it somewhere else. And even when we had our first brand that paid us to do a video for them, we still looked at it as like, Oh my gosh, why can't believe somebody paid us to do a video. And, you know, we finished graduated college. These guys were a year older than me. So they went on and Garrett and Cody went and got other jobs. I graduated college and it was still just like a thing that we viewed as like, oh, this is a fun little like side gig that we can do. And if somebody else pays us to make a video, great, but if not, like we're still having fun doing it. So we'll, we'll keep making these videos. And we were kind of forced into it. Honestly, we were not convinced that it was going to be a full time job, but kind of got faced with a decision where we had to try it for about eight months. And we all quit our other jobs and said, Hey, let's give this a shot and see what happens for eight months. And if not, we'll go back and get our jobs again and go somewhere else and try it. And I think it was really cool in those first two months, we were able to sign two big deals. And it was just really reaffirming for us like, Hey, God has a plan for this platform that is much bigger than any of us ever envisioned. And I think still, even at that point, though, we looked at every deal that came in as like, okay, well, Hey, we just bought another four months of timeline or we bought another, you know, two months because we just signed this deal. And it really took us a long time to start viewing this as something that we, we could really do longterm and had had some, some real like brand equity that we could really turn into something special. And I think, you know, the first time that we went on tour, which was 2017, 2019 was when we went and actually saw our fans for the very first time in person, because up until then we'd done like a few meet and greets or you'd go to whatever, some kind of event where people would show up to, but before that it was all comments and likes and hearts and digital. Like there was no actual human connection. And so to show up, I believe it was in San Diego was our first tour stop. And like actually see, you know, 7,000 people show up and be there in person with you was like, holy cow. Like I remember walking into the, to the arena and thinking like, there's no way there's going to be this many people in here for the first time. And just seeing the stage and the huge LED screen and all that. And then sure enough, you know, that night, that whole stadium gets filled out and it was like, wow, this is real. Like, so I think when we finally went on tour, that was that was kind of a moment for me where it was like, man, these, these are like real people that are out there walking and there is, there's a real connection that we can have with them. What a story. What a story. And from the outside looking in, it's like, you just, I've seen all these huge steps, you know, where you're like, you build this gym, people are like, wait, what? What? There's like a basketball court in there. And I mean, you're just like, what in the world? You know, just huge steps. And I think it does. It showcases the hand of God in your lives. And it's really powerful, really powerful kids to watch. And then they copy in ways that are embodied, right? That they're going to try their own trick shots. The thing I like the least is the bottle flipping. Yeah. We've had to apologize to a lot of people for the bottle. We didn't start that by the way. We just, we just start gas on the fire. The kid at the talent show started the bottle flipping craze to my knowledge. Yeah. We accelerated it. Yeah. So you say, like before the tour, then you're just like, you know, all you're seeing are the comments. And I wanted to read, this was just like the comments that were right at the top of the lobster video that I watched. So this is you like out. I mean, this is like surf Garrett, you're there. Like, I mean, they're talking about safety and, you know, you got to be with your partner. And I kind of feel like Garrett, they were trying to get out of being your partner. Oh yeah, I wouldn't blame them. Garrett was trying to get out of being his own partner. Yeah. But you had to free dive. I mean, this is advanced. It is. This is advanced stuff. And so the top comment was, I watched Duke Perfect for more than 10 years now. And I'm still surprised that Ty is just naturally good at everything. Greatest athlete of our generation. Wow. Wow. Those do get thrown around and I don't think they're way off. You know, the guys, the guys good. He's, he's way above average at most things. Yeah. You agree, Garrett? Yeah. Yeah, they're pretty far off. They're pretty far off. I don't think you're that much better than what they're saying. No, no, I don't think I'm cracking the top thousand athlete. But it's a funny joke. I mean, I appreciate it. It's nice. It's got a little Chuck Norris vibe to it, which rest in peace. Yeah, that was sad. I know, kidding. But yeah, no, it's a it's an honor, but not real in any way. So I love that one. The other comment that I saw that was right near the top said, I love the outdoors because we get to see all the nature that God has created for us to see. I can't wait for more outdoor videos. Do you find your kids are pretty athletic? Yeah. They're still young. We split. We try not to put too much pressure on being a great athlete. But my I have three boys. They do love going outside. And so I try and just do that as much as I can with them, whether it's on a flag football field, whether they're the best one on the field or not, I really don't care. I tell them this all the time. I care about if they listen to their coach and if they hustle and if they do those two things, then I'll be out there coaching them, supporting them, watching them for as long as they want to play. I love that. I love it. Okay. So I, um, I was going to bring in a special guest, which is my daughter. And here she comes. Here she comes. I've never done this. Actually, I have done it. I did it one time. Come on in. You want to say hello? Hi. Hi. How's it going? Okay. They said, how's it going? I'm going to give her the headphones in just one second. But what I wanted to tell you is that, you know, I have noticed that for me, obviously it's such small potatoes, but what I have learned over becoming an entrepreneur is just that it really opens up doors for other people, for family and for friends. And so a long, long time ago, like years ago, we had on a kid's author, Estie Smith, who writes this book series called the green ember. And one of our kids and his friends got to come on. Great book series. It's so good. It is. But besides that, none of the kids have come on. Nobody cares. So, um, but they all cared about you. And in fact, when we came to visit in Frisco, they learned that we've got some good news. Um, well, they made a song, it was your song, but they like recreated it and they sing it here in Michigan. And they said, we will not bring our cows. And, and this is Winnie and she like played a little cowbell triangle. And then we played it in front of the dude. Perfect. Offices. I mean, we were a total weirdos, but they're huge fans. And so I love the opportunity to kind of be able to share stuff with our kids. And so she has got the ending questions for you today. I'm going to give her the headphones. I love it. Let's go. And she has something to show you as well. So are you ready? Yeah. Okay. You're gonna do this. Okay. Hi, Winnie. Hello. How's it going? You and this. I bet it was a great song. Okay. It was. Okay. What do you want to show them? Well, I went to your hero tour last year and I still have my wristband, but it's literally completely faded of words. Wow. That thing's gotten some use. That's fantastic. I've been literally wearing it every single day since. That is awesome. Thank you for your support. Thanks. I want to tell you some things I liked about the tour. One, I actually, this doesn't have to do anything with the actual tour is that it was a surprise. Me and Dad were scootering around in Grand Rapids and I see a tour bus with your logo on it and Dad goes, Oh yeah, I think there are tours. And then I'm like, Oh, can we check if there's still tickets available? And he said, well, we've already got tickets. They're in the front row. That's awesome. What? Well. Big Ad move right there. Well done. Also, I'm very pro scootering. That's a great town. He's got twins love scootering around. But for a tour show, I think I'm up and D out on the streets. Yeah. Some things that I really liked about the tour is that I like the outdoor games, which is where I got this. There you go. Yeah. The fan zone. I liked it when you did wheel unfortunate. Yeah. Would you have spun the wheel if we brought you up? Would you have done all the things on the wheel? Yes. Really? Wow. Okay. All right. Good to know. Taking a note. And then I also like when you did all the competition games. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So this tour is going to be a lot more of the competition games. So we're doing, if you've seen the squad games videos that we've done, we did one with the Savannah bananas. We're going to do the same thing kind of on tour this year. So we'll have a seven game series. We're going to have a bunch of different guests come on with us on tour this year. And it's going to be even bigger and better competitions than we've done before on tour and we'll be taking up the whole floor this time. So it's going to be really fun. Okay. All right. Well, I know you're, we're low on time. So she has five questions to ask. And the first one was the squad tour kicks off on June 25th in Charleston, South Carolina. What do you want to tell kids and their parents about this tour? So I feel like you kind of already answered that one. Yep. So that's coming up in June. So you want to go on to question two? Yeah. Okay. My sister, Brooklyn has a question she wants me to ask. Perfect. It's for Tyler. All right. I'm ready. Let's hear Brooklyn's question. Tyler, why are you not in the music industry? Unfortunately, as much as I would love to be in the music industry, uh, I just don't have the talent. If I, if I was the greatest athlete of all time, then maybe I would be talented enough to go make it in the music industry. I love music. I enjoy doing it. I am a slightly above average guitar player. I'm an average singer. And unfortunately that doesn't get it cut. In Nashville. So I would love to be, but couldn't quite hack it. Unfortunately, it does lead the band at our annual Christmas parties. That is true. Uh, and thank goodness the talent bar is pretty low at the Christmas party, but we have a lot of fun with it. Okay. That was a great question, Brooklyn. You can tell her. All right. This question is from my other sister Vivian. So he wants to know why you believe in God. Hmm. Good question. Uh, I think, you know, for us growing up, uh, we were all very fortunate to grow up in families that prioritize church and faith. And I think it's pretty cool that, um, all of our parents kind of, um, put us in a position to, uh, receive that knowledge and just kind of be in and around church and around good people that could kind of pour into our lives. And so I know, you know, if you were to ask each and every guy, the most important decision that we've ever made in our lives, um, that each of us individually would say it was the choice to follow Jesus and make that, uh, a conscious effort. Um, and that is, uh, for sure, we believe the reason that dude perfect is still a thing 17 years later. Uh, I don't think without that faith and that common bond and just that view of this is a bigger platform than just the five of us. And there's a reason that we're still doing it at this point. And it's not just so the five of us can, um, have financial success or meet really cool people or just have a fun job that we feel like, uh, we don't have to work at. Uh, we truly believe that God has given us this platform in order to impact people and impact families, um, and give them an opportunity to flourish and come together. And so, um, yeah, I think, uh, that is, uh, for sure, the most important thing about dude perfect. All right. Question four, who did you pick to win March madness? Oh, well, I picked Florida, unfortunately, and they're eliminated. I did not pick anyone and didn't fill out a bracket. Hey, yeah, but he's a Michigan guy and they're still in it. They are still in it. You haven't a great year to pick mission. Yeah. One seed, right? Yeah. Yeah. They look incredible. I picked Duke. I pick them every year because the one year I didn't pick them, they won. No, I got to stay focused on that. I wouldn't say that it looks great, but I am dialed in. I love March madness. All right. My mom always ends this show with the same question. What's a favorite memory from your childhood that was outside? Hmm. Um, that I immediately, it's. Simple, but I think some of the simple ones are the ones that you remember the most. I immediately think of playing home run Derby with tennis balls in our driveway. And I mean, we would play my brother and I and friends from down the street. We would play for hours. And, um, I know it's y'alls, one of y'alls biggest things, but like we talk about all the time, like kids have forgotten, like this generation doesn't even know what we experienced of just playing outside for fun and getting off of the screen. So that's something that's good. One. I. Yeah. I would say we played a lot all the way through college and kind of like kind of want to go back to it of a roller blade hockey outside on the streets. Yep. A lot of time spent there with me and my brothers and our friends. Yep. I would say for me, we had a family ranch that I grew up on. Fortunately, all my, all my family was pretty close by. And so every year around November, we would all go do kind of like a guys weekend down there. And I remember being a seven year old kid and getting the invite to be able to go for the first time and having both my grandpas there, my uncles, my dad. And that was always a really special time for me that I looked forward to every year. So I'd say spending time out there at the family ranch. Thank you so, so much. I know you got to go. This has been like an honor of a lifetime. Huge congrats on the new book. People can check that out. I'll make sure I'll put all the links in the show notes. Pound it. Now I can see you. Yeah. Thank you guys. Thanks for having us. Just in question, you're a natural. Yeah. When's your podcast come out, Winnie? I don't know. You know, okay. I'll you might want to start thinking about that.
