Summary
Get Played hosts discuss Mugenics, an indie roguelite tactics game with cat breeding/management sim elements that has become a cultural phenomenon. While praising its exceptional game design and mechanics, they express significant reservations about its deliberately grotesque art direction, scatological humor, and graphic violence that they find off-putting despite the gameplay's brilliance.
Insights
- Exceptional game design can overcome significant aesthetic and tonal objections for engaged players, but creates a barrier to recommendation for others who share similar taste concerns
- Edmund McMillan demonstrates consistent creative risk-taking across genres (platformer to roguelike to tactics), prioritizing mechanical innovation over franchise repetition
- Roguelite design with permadeath creates emotional investment and strategic tension that justifies disposable party mechanics from a design standpoint, even when visually uncomfortable
- Maximalist design philosophy (Magic: The Gathering-inspired stacking of systems) creates emergent gameplay moments that are often funnier than intentional comedy writing
- Indie game composers (like Radiculon) deserve greater recognition for elevating production quality and emotional impact in games with limited budgets

This is a Head Gum Podcast. Matt, you know, I put a lot of time into Mugenics, which we're going to talk about this week. Yeah. An interesting game. An interesting game that I have a lot of thoughts on. I just... I don't want to spoil my thoughts too much. I'm just kind of disappointed. Uh-huh. Why? It's like such a you game, I feel like. Where are the freaking dogs? You know, you call it going to a game Mugenics. Yeah. You know, there's meows everywhere. There's a meow menu option in the main screen. Right. I don't see any freaking dogs. No, I mean, what do you... Are you saying that because you're like, oh, there are cats in the game and you think that because there are cats there should be dogs too? No, I'm just like, I get cats. Cats are the ones that are like, woof woof, you know. Oh, no, I see. And you take them on walks. They famously shit outside. Mm-hmm. You know, some people use them as like service animals. I see, no keep going. Which God bless the cats for that. Yeah, no, you got this, keep going. But I like... I'm more like dogs. You know, I like how they play with yarn. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like how they have little saucers of milk that they drink from. And I like that they use a litter box. I was like, I was like, where are the freaking dogs in this? I think before we tarry any further, I solved it. I think I can help you out real quick. Okay. With just one simple phrase, you fucking dumb. What do you mean I'm dumb? You're dumb. You got it backwards. What? You think cats are dogs and dogs are cats. That's impossible. There's no way I've spent 40 years of my life thinking dogs are cats and cats are dogs. You're telling people you're 40 now, huh? Yeah, I'm older than 40. You're not counting the thoughts you had when you were a baby. I can't remember those. It's calling me stupid. I'm aware that there was a point in my life that wasn't forming memories. No, and you didn't have any concept of what animals were pre-cognition. No. No. So that's fair. Yeah, that's fair. And then at a certain point I learned what dogs and cats were and I guess I got them backwards in my mind. Excuse me. But as a result, I get this mugenics game and I'm disappointed by the lack of presence of dogs. Now you might be saying if you think dogs are cats, why do you think things in the game are cats which exhibit what you would consider to be dog-like behavior? Well, here's my answer to that. Is that visually I know what a dog looks like. I just think their behavior attributes are like that of a cat and vice versa. So there you go. I just solved your logic problem there. Yeah. No, I was literally there. I was about to ask. So I'm glad you solved that for me, but it's okay. Yeah. You can just make this correction. Okay. Dogs. Dogs are the ones that go wolf-wolf. You know this now. Copy. Cats are the scaly ones with scales that shed their skin and don't make any noise, but they have tail and tail get cut off and it wiggle away and grow back. And they get those forked tongues. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Now I know what a cat is. Yeah. Thanks, Matt, for telling me. You're welcome. You're smart. Don't I know it? We role play as an animal hoarder and battle the undead with feline clerics as we discuss indie smash hit roguelite mugenics This Week on Get Played. Wow. It's Get Played, your one stop show for good games, bad games, and every game in between. It's time to Get Played. I'm Tiger Weigar alongside my co-host, Mr. Games, Maddapadaka. Hello, everyone. Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Get Played. Heather's not here. She usually does the intro. Yes. And I'm trying to keep all the moving pieces of it in my head. It's one of those things where it's like, heavy is the head that wears a crown. It really is. And we couldn't do this without Heather, and we probably can't. We definitely cannot. As you'll hear, as you've heard on the other Heatherless episodes. So far, so far, I'd say we're doing pretty good. I think we're doing great. About 50 seconds in, pretty good. Yeah, we're cruising so far. Yeah. It's all downhill from here. 56 seconds in, we're still doing pretty good. Let's not give second by second updates. Matt, you and I had a lot of fun socially the past week. And that included the two of us going to the LA premiere of the film, The Napa Boys, the last night as of this record. To the Grape. To the Grape, as they say in the film. It is an indie comedy written by and starring Nick Carrassi and Armin Weitzman and directed by Carrassi. And it is really, it is a movie. It's, I'll cite to behold, I will say I was sitting next to Pal of Ars, Casey Donahue, while we were watching, Risen Power. Sorry, sorry. He was, he used to work at Head Gum. He doesn't work at Head Gum anymore. It's part of the purge. He's alive. He's alive. And will cherish his memory. We sat next to each other. We were both howling the entire movie. Casey's got a good laugh. He's got a great laugh. We were both losing it. But we were also noticing that like the theater was never really unified at the one thing we were all laughing at. There was not a moment where like everybody was like, this is the part. Everybody was kind of like, I like there are pockets of people being like, this is my shit. And then other pockets of people like, this is my shit. Yeah. So there's really like, but it's like, oh, it's funny throughout is so funny. But Casey leans over to me after it goes, I can't believe that's a real movie. It's really, truly, truly one of a kind. I would highly recommend it seeing it in the theater with a crowd. If you did not get the chance to see it this past opening weekend, or maybe if you're living in an area where it hasn't opened yet, when it comes to your town, definitely try and try and see it because it is quite a cinematic experience. And if you're not in one of the places showing it, what are you doing? Get to the coasts, babe. Get to the coasts, babe. What are you doing? I think it's fine to live wherever. I don't think so. Yeah, actually it is not. As we've seen. I think most places to live are pretty bad. Pretty bad, yeah. Including here, honestly. You know what? We put up with a lot for how nice the weather is. Yeah. But it's not going so good. No, yeah. Go see the movie if you can. It's extremely funny. I was saying before. Very, very funny. That it's the exact kind of movie that my friends and I would have loved, like finding on DVD as teenagers. Yes. Because it's completely ridiculous. And it has just like some of the funniest people that we know in it. And you know, in the movie and behind the scenes and stuff, it's just a good, good time. I loved seeing it. Yeah, a lot of fun. Kind of a who's who of LA comedy and podcasting you were seeing in that screening, which was very nice. I got to, you know, got to go kiss the ring, got to go say hi to Mitch after the screening. Mike Mitchell, my dope boys co-host who's in the movie is very, very funny. I told him he was a stud. A damn star in the movie. He's great in the movie. He's so funny. Yeah. Couldn't accept the compliment. Aw, I don't know about it. Aw, I don't know. I'll just go kill myself. I'm like, calm down, dude. I was like, dude, you're doing me so funny. I think I've said this to him before too. I think he's just like a legitimately good actor. He's a good actor, yeah. He turned in a great performance and I think it should be celebrated as such. Yeah, good, good, a good looking movie too for an indie comedy with a very small budget as a great look to it. Yeah. Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed it. They had some themed bagel sandwiches afterward, which you and I grabbed immediately. Yeah, yeah, we were the first in line. We were the first two people in line. They had them basically in their hands handing them to us as we ran up to the fucking thing. They wrote Matt and Nick on them. They all said that. They were some egg bagel sandwiches from Yeasty Boys, which is a bagel truck here in LA. And they were themed in Apple Boys, the movie. They were busing. They were really good. I thought it was really yummy. That was good. You don't have to give a four score because I know you'll probably do it somewhere else, but I'd say to borrow a phrase, they're quite toothsome. They are quite toothsome. Yeah. Yeah, enjoyed it. Bagels are just good. One of the top breads, I think. We've done this. Our bagel is one of the top breads. Have we done this? We've done this for sure. I want to posit a new take. Rens, do we do this? Do what? Bagel's top bread. We've talked about top breads before, sir. I don't, have we? I think we've talked about top starches, top carbs, right? Probably haven't done bread category. We've done bread versus rice versus potatoes versus corn. And rice came out on top, we think. Yeah, I think we're a rice podcast, but bread, nothing to sneer at. No. But we're talking about different kinds of bread. That's a whole different discussion. Damn, is pasta on the low end of the starch tier? It might be. And I love pasta. What's tough is that I'm not the biggest corn fan in a vacuum, but corn tortillas are so good. A fresh pot corn tortilla? That's like, that's the best. I'm just in heaven. So I don't know. Do I like that more than pasta? Pasta's really good. Pasta's good. But where bagels for you, Ranch? Among breads. Top two. Top two. Wait, with what? Sourdough bread. Wow. For some reason, I thought you were, I thought you were going to say sourdough. We might have had this discussion before. It's just like, we might have done it. We probably did. We might have done it. I think like, to me, sourdough is like the default bread. If I'm going to have bread, I think I'm going to want sourdough. If it's like, yeah, if it's like a proper sourdough. Yeah. Not like a grocery store sourdough. No, for sure. But like a proper sourdough. Yeah, that's kind of the ideal of bread. I do want to toss out a brand new take. Okay. That we, I put it in the group chat earlier, but you said, you should say this on the show. Because we had Sam Richardson here last week. We talked a lot about Ninja Turtles. Ninja Turtles just kind of came up. A lot of fun with Sam. Sam Richardson puts in the group chat today that the Turtles are coming to magic the gathering, which is exciting. Right. Just playing a lot of MTG. Yes. And I threw this out. This was my take. I think that the Ninja Turtles could possibly be the one IP that everybody is on board with. Yeah, it's interesting because I guess, I guess, Rachelle was telling us that the Magic Gathering fan base is a little polarized or a little like, like having a little bit of backlash over things like the MCU sets, you know, Spider-Man coming to it. There's Fortnite set. Yeah. Some of these things that feel like they're kind of like breaking the lore, you know, breaking the fourth wall, if you will, of the, of the IP. Right. Or they just feel like cheap cash-ins. But the Ninja Turtles one seems to be well-received or people come around to it. It seems like people were mad about it and then they actually kind of like the cards now. Yeah. They remember they liked the Turtles. The cards are cool looking. Well, because this is, and this is the crux, the crux of the take is this. Yeah. Because like, I don't know if all of their movies exactly work. Right. I'd say most of them don't. Most of them don't. And even the ones that we think are good, not really. Comics are fun. Comics are fun. And in a mid-series fun. Yeah. Video games tend to be fun. All their flaws and for how bad they are, are fun. They are fun. No, I think the Turtles are fun. There's not, the criticism is not, it's never their fault. It's not the Turtles. The Turtles didn't mess it up. Yeah. Everybody, like, even in a bad Turtles movie, we're like, at least they're here. At least to see my guys, they're in the fucking movie. This is at least getting me to the end of this thing. Yes. Seeing what they're up to. Also, just like that the guy, there's four of them. Yeah. And they all have their own thing. Yes. And you can just like look at it. The other thing is, and then it's Raphael, he's got the red band down and he's got the Psy. It's cool but rude, of course. He's cool but rude. And you're just like, okay, I know what kind of quips this guy's going to deliver. I really, really liked the most recent. Actually that's the most recent one was good. That one is good. That might be the best one. It's 100% the best one. Because it's the only one that isn't rotten on Rotten Today. Not to say that that's the arbiter of what quality, you know, it's of course an aggregate. And I know that people are like, those movies are good. Sure. That's fine. I didn't grow up with it. I have a lot of fond memories of the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. I think we've talked about the joke. A little too raff. Yeah. That's come up. That's good. Great joke. That's a great joke. I think it's like their inclusion in the thing is enough to get you on board. Yeah. And I feel, I don't know. Every fan base obviously is toxic to some degree. But I don't feel like the Ninja Turtles fan base is when you're like, oh, watch out for them. Yeah. Yeah. It feels a little bit more wholesome. I think this is a good take of yours. It might be, which is rare, but it might be on the similar wavelength as Godzilla. Everyone loves Godzilla. Good movie or not. Godzilla's fucking sick as hell. You like Godzilla. So I think Turtles is like Godzilla kind of. Yeah. I mean, because I think there was maybe a time when you could have said like Spider-Man. Like everyone likes Spider-Man. Even if you don't. Like Natalie, who doesn't really like, like, you know, superhero movies love Spider-Man. And so it's just like, I feel like Spider-Man was just like a universal blood. But then the problem is there was MCU oversaturation. Well, that's the thing. People started getting sick of even Spider-Man himself. Well, now the question can be, because like, I feel like there was a large swath of Spider-Man movie fans have a Spider-Man. They're not necessarily, you know, just Toby or just like, or they're not all of it. They're like, I like the Toby McGuire Spider-Man movies. I not watched any of the new ones. I'm not interested in that. Yeah. Because they don't want to have to then watch, you know, 30 movies to know what's going on. But then there are some people who grew up with Tom Holland, you know, as the default Spider-Man. Sure. They're a little younger. Yeah. And then there's, you know, God bless him. I grew up with the Tarfield ones. I grew up with Toby Boy, of course. Sure. Yeah. I like the Sam Raimi films. Yes. And I do think that part of the appeal, and it's not part of the appeal, it's like almost all of it, is that like when Toby, obviously you have Sam Raimi who's like extremely competent and just knows how to make a movie. Like it's like, and it's good stuff. But you have the X factor of Toby McGuire being what, like 24 years old and like the cutest he's ever been. And like he's like the star of the movie. So everyone's like, I got to go see this thing, this little cutie pie Spider-Man. I got to see what's going on. This leader of the pussy posse. It's kind of him and Kirsten Dunst at both great at the kind of the height of their powers, or at least the height of their fame, rather. Both had very good careers. Kirsten Dunst still unbelievably great. Kirsten Dunst is so good. She can do anything. So you're in Civil War? What about a performance? I'm in Civil War. Oh my, man, you should see Civil War. I'm not going to watch it, but I knew it was going to be one of these things where I'm like, I know this is going to piss me off. Not the movie, but just in general, I'm going to be mad watching it. I think you'd like it. Okay. I liked everybody in it. Yeah. I think you'd like it. And I like Alex Garland. It's very Alex Garland. I'll put it on right after this. The Ninja Turtle is the most beloved IP, the most universal IP perhaps. I think so. I think that's a good, that's a strong thing. I mean, what are the other candidates even? You'd say like maybe like a Pokemon, a Hello Kitty, if we're just talking in terms of size, but I still feel like they're people, they have haters, right? They have haters for sure. If people are like, this is Kitty shit or this is dumb. And it's not going to be like, it could be Elmo, but people get mad at Elmo. People get mad at Elmo. The problem is Sesame Street is like too political now. Yeah. Well, Elmo praised Bad Bunny's Superbowl performance and people were saying that he needed to get deported. Elmo. Like he's from Sesame Street, which I think is in America. They would deport Elmo. They would do that. And you know who would lead the charge? Fucking Rocco. Fucking little rock nemesis. I think it might be the turtles. It could be, it's not the Simpsons because that has its own sort of like thing to like people have their factions, right? And then people who are like, this show shouldn't be on TV because it's making kids rude. And there's certainly like anime IP, like one piece that are so huge, but I think there is a lot of the West who is still unaware of that. I think the base level take is that like if you see the, and maybe we'll get to this a little bit later on site alone, you like the turtles. Yes. On site alone, you like the turtles. And also if there's a new turtles thing, you're always like, okay, I'll give this a shot. Whereas like, and hey, I love Sonic. But if there's a new Sonic thing, you're kind of like, we'll see. What are they going to fucking do this time? Yeah, we'll see. All right, buddy. Yeah. You have my curiosity, but not my attention. Hey, speaking of IP, I have a new tattoo to reveal. Oh, yeah. Here we go. So I got this Verrong tattoo a little while ago and then this, you can probably see this bad boy peeking out a little bit if you're looking at the video. Yeah. But I got Verrong a sister wife. There is power, power from chainsaw, man. Wow. Wow. This tattoo by Roxy of the Super Sweet Tattoo, Paula here in LA. You have a tattoo from Super Sweet. I have two. I have a couple actually. My friend is the owner and proprietor of Super Sweet, actually, Erin. And she's great. Roxy did an awesome job. Yeah. Such great line work, such great shading here. Just basically the only parameters I had was like power and she came up with this incredible design. So I'm so happy with it. And so the people listening and maybe the people looking at clips. Yes. Probably like, where was the big reaction? Here's the thing. I've seen it. I showed it to everyone already. I saw it again. I wasn't going to feign. It is very exciting. We lost it when he showed it to us, but that was for us. I can't do that every time. Can't do it every time. Yeah. It's clip farming this guy. I'm not clip farming here. I'm just revealing this because it's people can tell there's something. But yeah, it is power from chainsaw man who if you're not familiar with chainsaw man is a kind of a complete narcissist psychopath who has two little devil horns. Yes. And yeah, just a great character. How are you, what's, I mean, we talked about this a little bit, but like the aftercare of tattoos is like such its own thing. Right. Because like you, they get itchy and dry and stuff like that. Like you doing all right over there? Yeah. Thankfully I'm used to applying lotion. He's talking about jacking off. Because his dick's itchy. I don't know. Didn't really make sense. I don't know. I like to use, I feel like they recommend this though. I like aquafor. Yeah, I got some aquafor. Yeah. It's pretty good stuff. It is good stuff. Yeah. And then you feel kind of like, you know, sometimes I'll have like, I have some bigger ones, you know, you put a lot of it on. You're sort of like, what's like the, you kind of feel all slimy kind of though. That's the whole thing. Because I get these thigh tattoos and I get these meat. Yours are way bigger than mine. Like any tattoo that I have, you know, is nowhere near as big as those. No, yeah, this tiger and this guardian lion I have on my left and right thighs respectively are like, they're big boys and I got, you know, I got thunder thighs. I got these big meaty ham hocks. And so it's taken up a lot of real estate. So that was one where I would get really greasy and then I was wearing a layer on top of it. It would just kind of like, it'd feel a little awkward. Pants kept falling off. My pants would fall off. My pants would fall off. I remember looking at my little butt. Being pants used to be such a looming threat. Yeah. It's not something I have to think about or worry about anymore. I feel like maybe my wife has pants in my own home and that's pretty funny actually. That's funny to do. I mean, I never do that to my wife. But if she did that to me, I think it was pretty funny. It's kind of funny, but like it's never like, you know, you'd go to school and be like, oh God, I hope I don't get pants today. I don't want anyone to know I have pews. Imagine if you went to head gum and like Marty pulled your pants down. Like what the fuck? I guess I'd own the company. Hey man, I'm suing you. I can't do that. So that you would never do. He's like the nicest guy ever. Yeah. I remember getting pants at school. I never was like embarrassed. I always liked. I wouldn't be either. Okay. No, I always just, because I thought it was funny and it was my friends doing it. You know what I mean? So it was never, but I know there are people who have been bullied and that was like a whole other thing. You ever ripped your pants? I did rip my pants. I've ripped my pants a few times. There's a specific humiliation that comes with that. Yeah. I did. Because one, everyone can see your underwear. Kind of funny. That is funny. Two, you got to go home. You're in big trouble because you ripped your pants. You ripped your pants and your mom's going to like got to sew it or God forbid get you a new pair of pants. Would you ever come home with grass stains on your pants? Yeah, all the time. Oh man, we were just rolling around out there. Yeah, grass stains on my jeans and then grass stains on my knees. And I'd get like a real itchy because I was just rolling the grass. Okay. So yeah, you're used to applying lotion. You're right. You've just been itchy forever. I have four tattoos now. So it's like kind of like I have the first couple. I was kind of like, oh, I got to be really meticulous about this. And then over time, just like, oh, these things are going to heal. I just got to be take care of it. Don't don't expose myself to the sun too much. Don't go in the sauna or anything. You know, yeah, but speaking of itches, you've sort of gotten me the itch and I'm like, I is about caught me. That's like looking at available space on my arms. I was like going like this while we were on the couch. There is like like placing out like where I would get more and she was like, what are you doing? I was like, I kind of want to get a bunch of tattoos now. I have some. I have seven, I think. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Yeah. Don't clip that. Don't clip six, seven. No, ranch, don't do it. Ranch. He said it. He said the thing. You get the keyblade on there. What do you have? What are your other video game ones? I don't have any other video game ones, but I have that. I have this little ghost with pizza. Love the ghost pizza. I have this California bear with the poppies on it. Aaron did this actually. Aaron did this one who owns Super Sweet. Did this one and did this one. And then this one was also done at Super Sweet. So you're gesturing at your Simpson's Moth tattoo. Yes. That I witnessed you show to Simpson's showrunner, Matt Selma. Yes. And you really liked it. Yes. I had a real struggle getting my arm out of my sleeve, kept dropping everything, felt like a real dunce. But he seemed to enjoy seeing it. Yeah. It's not from a Simpson's that he had worked on. Well, season one. Who from season one is still around beyond James L. Brooks? Yeah. Yeah. Do you think that the audience from the end title card is still like they're still hanging out in there? Do you think they're still part of it? The Gracie films? Yeah. Yeah, they're still watching every episode. Someone gets shushed at the end. Because you're watching the Simpsons just sort of like, okay, this is a TV show. And then that happens and you're kind of like, wait. So I was watching a show about people watching a show. Yeah, I was watching the their perspective. Yeah. They're like us. They're like us. But they're trapped in there. What's actually happened is that they have survived over the decades. They never thought the Simpsons was going to be in the air this long. They got in there. They're like this weird adult animated show. This will be on for like six episodes. Then we can get out of here. They've been trapped in there and over time they've started, you know, building their own society, figuring out self-governance. They started breeding new generations. Yeah. And they're doing a good job. They're doing a good job. They're so very orderly. Yeah. Like they're like, this is our code. This is what we do when the Simpsons is on. We sit patiently. We watch the episodes silently in the very end. Someone makes some noise and someone shushes them. Speaking of adult animated shows, I didn't get to plug this last week. I'm on an adult animated show on Netflix called Strip Law. And I play a character named Kevin. I'm in three episodes and it is, I think, the craziest thing that's ever happened to me. It's awesome. Congratulations. Kevin looks like me, so you'll know who it is immediately. And also, if you're a good listener, you'll notice he sounds exactly like me because I am not an actor. This is Colin Crawford's show. Yes, Colin Crawford. Great dude. Very funny dude. And this is, people should check this out. Every episode is on Netflix. Every episode's out there. I pop up in episode six and I hang around there for a little bit. But watch them all. But watch them all. Watch them all because I was legitimately like, this show's so fucking funny. I was watching it and laughing my ass off. And there's a lot of, not just me, there's a lot of people you know from podcasts and the like. Yeah, great cast. And also, just from, purely from a standpoint of, if you want to support Matt, watching the whole season will ensure that future seasons get produced. And give it two thumbs up on Netflix because that's weirdly important. Yeah, they want two thumbs up. You know that thing that you didn't realize Netflix had? Yeah. Apparently that's a huge metric in terms of them renewing shows. So make sure you click the two thumbs up icon. Do that. Separate from the like icon. Or maybe it's the like icon that you hit twice. It's a scale. So it used to be thumbs up or thumbs down. It's not thumbs down anymore. It's one thumb. Okay. Or two thumbs or nothing. There's no thumbs down. There's no thumbs down anymore. So it's a thumbs up, a thumbs down? Yeah. Well, you get, right? It might as well be. Might as well be. Might as well be. Certainly not doing you any good. No, put two, god damn it. I want to do it again. It was really fun. It was really crazy. Like, you know, they had like, there's like legends of voice acting on the show. And I'm walking in and I've never done this before. And I legitimately asked. I was like, wait, so like Chris Sumner was just in here doing this. What the hell am I doing? And then like was doing a couple of takes. And I was like, guys, I just need you to know you can tell me if I'm doing a bad job. Because once again, I've never done this before. And they were so nice and so great. You know, I think Colin is so smart and so funny. You'll know him from one of the funniest tweets ever, which I'm going to butcher right now, which is I'll tell you what. No, it goes, if my friends found ET, we would have beaten him with hammers. I can tell you that. I think there's an element of like screaming the whole time. Yes. Yeah. You got to check it. Check it out. It's really funny. I feel super happy to be a have been even a small part of it. Congratulations. I hope people watch the show for you and for its overall quality level support, a quality animation from the Napa Boys. Isn't it? How about that? He's really funny. Yeah. He's just good stuff. But he also was apologizing in the booth like you. I'm working on this imposter syndrome thing. We'll try. We've all had those nights, the ones where you laugh until the sun comes up, where conversations go places they've never gone before, and you walk away feeling closer to the people around you than you have in years. I don't know about you, but I like keeping my money where I can see it. Unfortunately, traditional big wireless carriers also seem to like keeping my money too. Those greedy sons of you know what? After years of overpaying for wireless, I finally got fed up with crazy high wireless bills, bogus fees, and free perks that actually cost more in the long run. And I switched to Mint Mobile. Look, the writing's on the wall, okay? These wireless companies, they got us over a freaking barrel. And soon you're going to have to be wearing it because you'll be spending all your money. You won't be able to buy clothes. You'll have to fix straps to a barrel and wear that to work so you could pay off the debt to these GD big wireless companies. And everyone's going to be like, nice barrel and you know they won't mean it. No barrel is nice to wear. They're not form fitting. They make you look slovenly. And where'd you even get that? It was probably outside. It's probably dirty. It probably stinks. You could avoid all that by switching to Mint Mobile. Stop overpaying for wireless just because that's how it's always been. Oh, wait a minute. Hold on. I got a voicemail from the Resident Evil merchant. Oh, you should, you want to play it? Yeah, I mean I wasn't checking my phone. I do not disturb but I just kind of looked at it for the time and like, yeah let's just play it because it may pertain to the show. I'm already playing hide and seek with the Resident Evil merchant and I can't be there this week because I don't know if you guys have heard about this. Everybody's talking about it. The Epstein virus. I don't know. I'm trying to figure out how I can get in there. But it's just on the tip of everybody's tongue. I'm trying to get myself into the Epstein virus and I miss my friends. I miss my friends at Wrench, Captain Wrench. So here's the question I have for you is, Nick Weikert, what are you playing? Wow, thanks so much Resident Evil merchant. And yeah, good luck. Best of luck in getting into the Epstein virus. I'm going to say if you're listening back to this, that is the opposite of what people are trying to do. If I could steer you in any other direction, it would be the other way. The idea of smoothing like a fake email to make it seem like you were in the Epstein virus. No, that's me. That's me. Just to seem more important. I'm rich actually. Resident Evil merchant asked me, what are you playing? And what I am playing is demon tides. This is an indie platformer that was released on February 19th of this year by developer for bras. I'm not sure how to say that, but they also made Bubsy 4D, which was not part of the Bubsy collection when we reviewed that on how to get played over on the Patreon. But I think was well received. And this is an indie 3D platformer where you are a spunky demon girl. It's apparently to a sequel to a game I haven't played or frankly heard of Demon's Surf. And from the Steam reviews I saw, Steam Tour reviews I saw of that game and this game, this is like a huge step up apparently. That was like a little more prototype. This is a little bit more fully realized. They spent like four years working on this. I'm having so much fun with this game. Like like Astro Bot levels of fun. It's just like such a it's just such a joyous platformer with such great kinetic motion. The art direction is delightful. This vibrant color palette. Environmentally it's like at least looks wise, not in terms of the geometry. It's very simple with these kind of lightly detailed textures that sit in really well. And with the characters who have these amazing cel-shaded designs and strong animation. Also you know kind of an era of sexy double lady NPCs. It's kind of a big it's a it's a new genre that I will say I'm not mad at. Yeah, I'm not not upset at the sexy devil lady who's looking good and demon tides. Like joining Carlac and Malevala as you know in kind of the yeah I guess the Mount Babemore. What would you say? The hot devil Uvra. Yeah. I'm running on max everything. Lock 60 FPS looks great. Locomotion feels awesome and dizzying in a good way. So your character can change forms with a button pressed and there's a few different forms you can get and I imagine there'll be more as you get as you progress but I have a bunch you there a bunch you even start out with introduced to in the tutorial. I'm looking at footage of it on the steam app right now and I cannot believe how this looks it looks awesome. It looks awesome. I think it's also optimized for steam decks. I'm gonna find out because I'm buying it right now. It's really really fun. So your double jump turns you from this little this demon girl into a bat and then you have a hover which turns you into a little whirlwind. You also have a snake form where you move super fast. Heather would love this because this is like Sonic fast when you're the snake. It's almost like you're almost out of control. You toggle it on and then if you go to speed burst mode you're basically controlling your steering with the camera like you're just moving like a continuous rate of speed and it's it's it's super fun and also because of the way the game is designed it has this open world that that gives you you know a few different biomes a few different areas of the world map to explore. Right now I'm in kind of an ocean biome. I don't know if that's what all of it is but the snake form can swim really really fast in the ocean and so it's this like really vast sort of I guess you could call it a wilderness overworld that you can explore and then what you'll do is you'll find a little patch that will have like just a level and it will just be part of the overall like almost like kind of sonic frontier. Okay. You'll just run into it and it's not like a little portal you jump in and jump into it's on a Mario painting or an Astro world you know Astro boy what is an Astro boy? Yeah Astro bot. Yeah. Did they say Astro boy the first time? No you said it right the first time. Okay. Is it what what is it an Astro bot? Do you remember? I don't even remember like it's like a little planet right? It's a little planet. Yeah. Whatever you find that takes you into that next environment. Yeah. There's like many levels that you find there. Oh what? It's gone. It's just gone. It's just part of yeah it's just gone. Astro bot no cultural impact. It's just part of the the overworld and so you get there and you have this little section where you can do some some platforming. I could replay Astro bot if I want. Astro bot's great great game. Another mechanic that I have not seen it might be in other platformers I'm not sure if this is this and it's it's the previous game invented this but you set your own checkpoints so you have like one little checkpoint flag you carry with you. Okay. So you can't replace it if you die that's where you respawn but you only have one of them. So it kind of becomes down to a thing of like how cautious do I want to be versus how greedy do I want to be you know in terms of what how much progress do I potentially want to lose. That's interesting. If I get to this new area and I'm like wow that was a really tough platforming section you're tempted to plant your flag but then it's like it's maybe a pain in the ass to reverse back to where you were and where your flag was previously so it's it's a little bit of a cuckoo but I also like that because it's just sort of like you know what this is giving me some trouble. Let me just put a flag right here so I can I can drill down just this section. Yeah. Versus like wherever the game developers decided to place the checkpoints. That's awesome. Yeah it's I like that a lot that also you know you if you're an indie team you're a small development team you have to decide where you're going to put your resources and they put a lot of resources into the main characters animation which is so labor intensive like it's like there's a reason a lot of indie games are 3D games are our first person because then you just don't have an anime in a main character that takes up so much time but they really really did it on this one because there's no way a 3D platform would work without that. Yeah. And it just like it was time well spent because again it just like feels great like it looks great and it feels great and those things aren't always necessarily in line you know you can have a jump that looks great but like it feels a little bit awkward in terms of its timing and this one everything is just just really really precise. The combat feels a little simple at least in the first few hours I've played but it also doesn't seem like an emphasis you know. Yeah. It's more just like platforming and then traversing these obstacle courses but what it kind of feels like is you know I said Astro Bot but I think a better comparison is like more like a Spyro the Dragons the Jack and Daxter's of the world. It kind of feels like one of those games was made in 2026 just with production values that aren't quite triple A level. It's not like you know a naughty dog game because they don't have those resources but where they did spend them it does still have a really strong art direction. Great great music too and yeah I'm a big fan of platformers one of my favorite genres. Some of my favorite games are our platformers and I just I just really love that Unity on a real engine and other engines that are used for indie development are now at the point where these small teams can make these fully realized 3D platformers because some of my favorite all time games are not just platformers but indie 2D platformers and now we have an era where we're going to see a lot more indie 3D platformers like this one so yeah if you're a platformer fan there is a demo check out the demo if you like it you'll probably like the full game. Great I'm checking that out for sure because that sounds right up my alley. That's amazing. It's really cool. I would never would have like I don't think I would have heard about it otherwise so I'm glad you shared that because I do like I love platformers. Yeah I had I said this in a group chat the other day I had a dream the other night that there was a new Ratchet and Clank game out that I didn't know about and I was so excited in the dream and then I woke up and I was mad that it wasn't true. This kind of I didn't mention Ratchet and Clank but this kind of does have a Ratchet and Clank feel to it like it's like you know again it's not a rift apart is maybe still the best looking game of this current generation just absolutely gorgeous it's not at that level in terms of how detailed they were able to make it but it has that sort of a vibrant palette and you know it's really approachable a lot of heel. Do you think I'll like it more than Balan Wonderworld? I think it's maybe a little bit better than Balan Wonderworld as I know that's basically heresy to say. I know. The game that put Yuji Naka in prison. It's crazy that's I mean that like he's in prison. Is he still in prison? He might still be in prison. It's just what a like just when you think that wonders may never cease. Yes. Yuji Naka is in prison. The real Wonderworld is the one in which we live. Yeah absolutely Yuji Naka is in prison. Yes. And that's it. We got him. We got him. The one criminal that's ever done anything bad. Look I'll tell you what I've been playing. Yes. Still chipping away at Dragon Quest 7 going slow with that. Yeah I kind of slowed down on that too. Not that I'm not enjoying it. No. I'm just playing a very situational sort of thing where I'm like hey you know what I'm just trying to chill because I'm playing it on the easiest setting. I'll like clear like a little area and kind of just do that like in the you know you'll go to a new town and then you'll go to whatever the they're not dungeons I guess but I guess they kind of are. And you'll go sort of like through and you know fight monsters and get the thing that you need to solve whatever is going on in the town. That's what I do like about it is that each area I mean I guess it's like every RPG but like each area has its own like very contained story. Right. So that then when you're back in the present day you can see how fixing it there affects the actual world and I think that's really cool. I just think it's gorgeous and I really love the game. I'm hoping to get a little more time with it pretty soon because otherwise I've been playing a lot of the game that we're talking about this week but we're on we're on an eve of two very important dates. Yes. Not to date this episode but you know every episode is recorded in the past. Right. And released in the present. Matt you're blowing my mind. We're on the eve of the 30th anniversary of Pokemon. There's a Pokemon presents tomorrow and God knows what's going to happen at that. Yeah who knows. Who knows. It could all be bad. It could be nothing. It could be nothing. They did accidentally leak a week early that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are coming to the Switch to eat the store not the Game Boy Nintendo Switch online service. You can buy it standalone for 20 bucks. Yeah. Some people are pretty mad about it. Yeah you gotta buy them. They're mad and then they're forking over their 20 bucks. I will let me just explain my experience. Didn't even think about it. Bought it immediately as soon as I was available I was refreshing a link from Wario 64 like it was. Like they were going to run out. In some ways and look I've gotten so much joy from Nintendo's hardware and software over the years but there are a lot of ways it's kind of like dealing with an airline where it's just sort of like you feel like they're kind of like we know you'll pay a little 30 extra dollars for comfort plus. Yeah. Oh you want to sit next to your wife? It's going to be $200. Fuck yeah I'll pay it. I'll pay the 200 bucks to sit next to my wife. I want some fucking stud sitting next to my wife. I saw a video I saw a plane video where it was like this fucking roided up meathead who was just screaming at somebody. He was starting a fight with some guy and then another guy was like making fun of him and so he was threatening that guy and like threw a sandwich at him or whatever. But he was getting escorted off the plane. My favorite genre of video. It's so funny because it's reliably the same type of person every time. Exactly the same type of guy but his whole thing was like how would you feel if that guy was talking to your wife? He was mad the guy sitting next to his wife was talking to his wife? How are you that insecure about being cuckold? Your wife can't have a pleasant conversation with a stranger. It's insane. Also just be one of those guys who's like into getting your wife fucked. It seems much easier. Yeah you don't have to do it. But it's another important date tomorrow. The release of Resident Evil 9 Requiem. Wow. And I don't know if you've seen this wife. It's getting raves. Yeah. The reviews are very good. It's the highest reviewed non-remake Resident Evil since Resident Evil 4. Wow. 20 years ago. Jesus 20 years ago. Insane. I'm so as a recent finisher of Resident Evil 2. You are the finisher. I am the finisher. I'm very very excited about Resident Evil 9 even though I know for a fact I'm going to be too scared to play. Yeah. I mean you were pretty spooked by Resident Evil 2. I think maybe Resident Evil 2 low key the scariest game I've ever played. I think Silent Hill 2 obviously very scary but Resident Evil 2 just knowing that that fucking Mr. X is just walking around is really scary. Yeah. I mean I haven't played the remake. As I mentioned I played it on PlayStation 1. I do remember it being scary. Yeah. I think just probably experiences that were a little more visceral like PT I find I still find scarier. Yeah. But I get where you're saying. He's just so big. He is big. And like not in like a cool fun way either. You're kind of like he's actually too big. And he like he has to like duck down to get into doorways and stuff. So you know when the first when like Force Awakens comes out and everyone's like is Snoke big because they have the projection of Snoke and he looks very big. Yeah. And then Last Jedi comes out. Great film. Yes. And it turns out he's kind of big. He's big but not as big as you thought. He's like a normal size. He's like a big guy but he's still like a normal sized guy. I mean he's probably like seven four. That's like pretty big. He's like he's like big. He's like Victor Wembley and Yama. He's like an NBA player but he's like a normal guy. He's not like oh you're a giant. Yeah. He's not 15 feet tall. Yes right. Which will obviously be ridiculous. He's not going Phi Phi Fo Fo. No no no no. He should have said that though. We pretty good. Nobody's saying it anymore. People don't say Phi Phi Fo Fo Fo anymore. We used to be a country. Next time I smell something good I'm going to go Phi Phi Fo Fo. They're out there saying Phi Phi Fo Fo. This giant comes up to me tears in his eyes says thank you. Thank you Mr. President for letting me say it again. Thank you very much. Thank you for banning magic beans. This jack guy he's a nasty man. This guy jack unbelievable. Climb so fine. Goes into a guy's house. He sold his cow for a magic bean because he thought magic was better than beef. Magic more important than feeding his family but guess what the beanstalk grew and he climbed it up. I'm also kind of being Sebastian Manskalko. He climbed the fucking beanstalk okay. He climbed the beanstalk. Does he curse? I don't think he does. I'm kind of doing my version of it. What if Sebastian Manskalko cussed my mom's fucking lasagna. You're fucking unbelievable okay. You wouldn't sneak into that house if that giant was Italian. Here's the thing. We're making fun. Every clip of him I've seen I've laughed at him. He's so funny. I'm always laughing. He's so funny. I think if I went I would cry laughing. I'd be like this guy's got it. There's a, wasn't the MTV movie awards he hosted? He hosted some MTV thing and it was one of those things where it's like it was just completely not a good fit for him. The show starts, he walks out and a bunch of steam comes out and his first joke is like I'm sorry about that. My mom's cooking a lasagna. And just like an audience of confused zoomers. What the fuck is this? I'd be like fuck yes. Absolutely. I'd fucking rip my shirt off. Start spinning in the air. I'd be so pumped. I think he's hilarious. I have a friend who went to college with him and has been on his email newsletter for like 25 years. And has watched Sebastian Manuscalco, a guy he like kind of knew when he was like 19, go for him being like hey guys I'm doing this set at the ice house. If anyone wants to come support me too he's playing fucking stadiums but still using the same mailing list. It's so funny. You know what that to me means? For some reason he's a pretty good guy. I do like it. I do like it. That's charming. I like that. I wonder if this guy has had his mom's lasagna. I've had very few home cooked meals from my friend's parents I would say. On the whole. I've had some. I've had some good ones. I don't know if I have. Maybe like burgers and hot dogs. Sure. But like nothing like I haven't had like this is the special recipe type of thing. I think it just depends on the family. Yeah. Sometimes you have a family that really likes to cook. Yeah. All that. The ideal is if you find a family that's like oh you're like a different culture. Like you have a different sort of cuisine that you make. Like you know what I mean? Yeah. Like you have a friend like you're like you're white like I am. Yeah. And you have like a friend who's Indian growing up and you get to have like really good Indian food to their house. Yeah. That does remind me. I know I have had this experience then where I went to my buddy's house and his family's Cuban and I had already eaten food before I got there and like his grandma kept fixing me plates and I was like I'm not hungry at all. And he was like it's easier if you just eat it. He's like just eat it. And I was like the most fool I've ever been in my life. Good family. Yeah. All that to say I'm really pumped for Resident Evil 9 Requiem and looking forward to playing that but I've been spending a lot of time playing a different game that we've been that we're talking about today. That's right. We are going to talk about that in just one second. I just want to check in with Rachelle Chen real quick. Ranch, have you been playing? What are you playing? Anything notable? I've actually been playing this game called Consume Me. Wow. It's an indie game by a woman who basically I didn't even know how to explain it but basically your teenage girl and you have to like watch your diet. Oh my gosh. Yeah. And it's like it's almost like the diary of this like woman's life. Oh wow. And like you go through your day you like have a boyfriend and you like have to figure out how to spend your time and it's kind of like a puzzle in that way where you only have like four hours after school to do something and then that's either like do your chores, work out, go shopping like all these things. Yeah. It's kind of like a time management game but there's also a really heartfelt like relatable story and the art is like so cool and yeah. It's just kind of almost like this girl's diary of like her life. Interesting. It's very touching. I'm looking at the development leads are Jenny Zhao, Sha, I apologize for butchering their name and AP Thompson who I guess met at the NYU game development program as a as as as undergrads or grad students and they made a previous game be glitched. But no, this was this began as a as a student project for her undergraduate degree. There you go. It's a sounds interesting. Yeah. I guess it's semi-autobiographical which makes a lot of sense. And so like the gameplay loop is like just doing the various like tasks you were saying right and like you have like a you like end your day basically and like the next day you like can do the same stuff. Exactly. And then yeah, you just like go through this this girl's life. It's really cool. Yeah. It's a really cool game. It low key is triggering. Oh, sure. Being back in like a teenager's mind. But yeah. Yeah. It's super awesome. I'm I'm looking at the the art now is really really cool. It's like kind of like these. Oh, yeah. Simple sort of cut out sort of style kind of intentionally a little bit low res. But it's but also like the cuteness of it. I bet probably like both mitigates but also underlines, you know, just like kind of that feeling. I wonder if there's like I have I have based on you playing this ranch, I have a recommendation for you, but there's not a way I might just have to lend you my play date so you can play this. There's a game called Bloom where you're a girl who works at a flower shop and like has dropped out of school. And I just think you like it. So maybe I have to let you borrow it because it's I'm one of the only people on earth that have played it. It's great. It's really really good. Do you wait? Is this things like so I'm looking at this at some more screenshots. This one has like save money for a swimsuit. So there is there kind of like do you end up with things where it's like, oh, I have this weird sort of body dysmorphia or whatever. And so I have specific goals. Yeah. Oh, interesting. So this seems really cool. I mean, I would really recommend shout out to the developer. She seems awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, buddy. Speaking of really cool games, let's talk about Mugenics, which was released on February 10th, 2026 and was developed by Edmund MacMillan and Tyler Glail. This is a roguelite tactics game with a sim element that I discussed for what are you playing a few weeks ago and this has become so zeitgeist-y and omnipresent in the less than a month that it's been out. Yes. It has upwards of a million copies and I guess it's outsold binding of Isaac, which is Wild, which was his Edmund MacMillan's big previous game. I don't know. I'm still playing the shit out of this game. Yes. I'm not anywhere near done with it. I mean, there's so much content in this game. I think it's north of like a hundred hours actually finished. And it hooked me immediately. We were like, when you originally talked about it a couple weeks ago, you were saying you were curious what I would think of it because obviously it's a cat game. So that's going to bring me over the threshold so far, right? But the tactics of it all, I have not played a ton of tactics games. I've played some of the Mario Rabbids tactics, which is like tactics for beginners basically, but it's pretty involved. You can get pretty involved with it, but I've played some into the breach. Is that tactics right? Yes. Very much so. I played some of that. I believe that I don't know for certain, but it does seem like Mugenics has some, drew some inspiration or at least some took some design cues from into the breach. And it certainly game I heard Edmund McMillan mentioned in his interview on the Great Triple Click podcast. And, yeah, I had that's I was waiting to listen to that one actually because I was like, I don't want to get like anything like I wanted to be really surprised when I started it. Right. And I was just starting off of what you had described and it's weirder than that even like it's like it's it's it's there's a lot of crazy stuff in it. But I will say as far as like the tactics go, that was not a turn off for me in this game at all. And actually I found it like some of the more not easy, but more simpler to understand like what I was doing and why like type of type of thing. And I really enjoyed the combat so far. It's got, you know, because this game has been in development for a long time and it's it's been really heavily tuned. The onboarding, I think is pretty effective in that it's it tosses a lot at you, but not like more at you than you can handle. And the first, you know, biome you're in, it's like the enemies are fairly simplified and, you know, the the the amount of abilities you have access to are pretty limited. So you're kind of like understanding coming to understand the UX and the mechanics of it before it just starts dogpiling on an endless number of additional systems. Catpiling. Yeah. Catpiling. Matt, thank you for the correction. Catpiling on. Somebody had to do it. An unending number of systems and mechanics where the game gets staggeringly complicated, but you somehow are able to digest all of it along the way. Yeah, I mean, it's it's a, Macmillan is is is so clearly a genius at game design. I mean, the core gameplay loop, the amount of depth and variability available here is so compelling. That's why I've been playing for 20 hours and I will probably I see myself playing for, you know, 80 more hours. I just like I feel like I'm going to hit 100 hours in this game easy because I'm just having so much fun with it. And we're talking about this week partly because I know Heather would hate this game. Yes. This is very much not a game for Heather. No. Partly because she was texting us today. We knew she wasn't going to be here. She was texting us today. Matt was going to hit the roof. What is it? I'm fucking mad at this tape. I don't think I've ever been mad at Heather before ever. This is like about as close as I can get. This take to me is is is like I don't even know what to say about it. I can't bring it up. I don't I don't have it in my text history, but she was complaining about God of War Ragnarok, which I know you love. You know, love the new God of War and Ragnarok as well. Yes, I can. I have it right here. OK. Then I quote, Sight Note, if I was there for the show tonight, my take would be for a game called God of War. Shouldn't there be more fighting? And I responded, what do you mean? And then, you know, Nick thought maybe generously that Heather was talking about Sons of Sparta, the new side scroller that came out, which I have not touched yet. Me neither. I'm interested in it. And I said, no, I think she's talking about Ragnarok, which is making me sweat. I was like sitting at my desk like I was already having kind of a stressful day at work. I was like, I can't. I don't need this today. This is like this is a nightmare. And then basically she's like, there should just be more like killing where you should be it should be like just a bullet hell, like a fighting all the time. There should be people. There's not enough enemies on the field at any given time for her. She's like throwing axes at mirrors and shit, which I will say like that is a lot of it. You are throwing your axe quite a bit to solve sort of environmental puzzles, but the games all the games have always had puzzles. Any time there's a basically any time there's a puzzle she's like, I'd rather be fighting. Yes, absolutely. Which is, you know, I think it's fine. Yeah. But to say that there's not enough. I'm like, there is. I was like, you have to fight Thor. You have to fight tear. You have to fight all these guys. You go toe to toe with Odin, you know, like you're you do do it. It is like, you know, it's a single player character action game. So it's like you there is a story also that is at play, which, you know, you can't necessarily serve as a story with just fighting. But, you know, I think there's plenty of it. She's not here to defend herself. No, but I was unfortunately the last one ever here ever. But she I just was trying to to see if there's something I could point her towards. And I look for like like character action games with the most combat and the least amount of downtime. Like that's what she loved about goes to Yotage is going around killing things. Yes. You know, a lot of these were games she played. Double may cry five, Ninja Gaiden two, Bayonetta. I mean, a lot of the recommendations were like, you know, she could replay these. These are games she likes. But Sifu, I guess she hasn't played. So maybe we'll hear Heather's take on Sifu in the future. I think she's really going to like Sifu. Yeah. And, you know, I'll expect to just like a written apology at any time and I'll accept it. You know, my doctor's got me on a Sifu diet. We don't have time for this. So here's the thing. I love don't just like pretty much love this game in every way. Yes. Except for its content. Because the big thing about this game is there's something. Yes, a lot of it is repulsive. Like it's like really aggressive, intentionally so. Like like like the sort of abrasive quality to it in terms of in terms of a lot of the art direction. There's a lot of gross out stuff. There's a lot of like early on new grounds, edge lord, like sort of energy to it. Yeah, yeah. For me, and I suspect many of its fans is not a plus, but is in fact an obstacle. And that's the kind of thing where I'm just like, if not for that, this might this could be an all timer for me. I mean, it still might be just by by virtue of its game design. Yeah. But a lot of the I mean, frankly, a lot of the writing, a lot of the dialogue and a lot of the tonal stuff, a lot of the just sort of general just sort of like like like tone do it is is just I find really unpleasant. Yeah, I you know, I haven't played Binding of Isaac. I did play Binding of Isaac and I bounced off of it for the same reason. Yes. Here I just like the gameplay that much more. So the guy like this guy's obviously got like a style, right? That he's going for like it is kind of like that similar type of like that humor. Like, yeah, Internet browser flash game type of like, you know, you have played and we've all played is Super Meat Boy, which we did an episode on back of the how to the skip play days. And you know what, which I finally finished when we did that episode and was very satisfying. Great game, very, very fun game play, great platforming. Again, he's just like a genius in terms of. Yes. Just just making a game feel good just in terms of of of creating a compelling gameplay experience. But that game has the bad guy is Dr. Fetus, you know, yes, and Dr. Fetus, I forget because you're Meat Boy, a boy with no skin. And then I forget who the damsel in distress is. Yeah, but she has some other body horror quality to her. But every time you finish a level, Dr. Fetus punches her in the face. And it's like the kind of thing is like, you know, need this. We don't need this. And I like it's not even like that. I'm offended. It's just like, just like, all right, dude, great. I get your sort of edgeler thing. Yeah. And then you see it 60 times over the course of the game. But while we're enjoying some of the best platforming you've ever played. Before we continue to make it very clear, we're not being woke or anything. We're not being woke. We're not. We're not being woke. We're not being like that. We're being woke. We can't say that. You cannot accuse us of being. We're not even doing that. OK. All that to say. The game's a little bit yucky. The game's a little bit yucky. The game's a little bit yucky. You know, you see these cats fucking and sucking. Yeah, that's nasty. It's nasty. You can, I think, blur that or turn that off. But that but you hear squish to your squishies. Yeah. And then, yeah. So the sound design is also kind of like repulsive. And then I do think that the art style, just in general, is a bit of a bummer to me because everything is a little bit dirty, right? Like in your indies, like alleys and stuff like that. So there's like trash and everywhere and like, like, you know, the cats can shit just in the house and stuff like that. And some of this stuff, I don't. It's just it's all like, you know, where do you draw the line? I know for some people, like who maybe just love scatological humor or just whose sense of humor never progressed past, you know, like 2005. This is very much their shit. Yeah. But for me, I'm like, I don't know. I mean, I don't mind cleaning up the cat shit because that's like, like whatever. Yeah. OK, you're taking care of cats. That's part of this the sim aspect of it. That seems totally fine. You should be able to get a little robot like it would be fun if you get a little robot. Maybe you can. I mean, there's a lot of content in this game. Yeah, that's a thing you can have. You can you can buy at some point. Yeah. Like you get to a. But what you can't avoid, what you can opt out of is like or what I feel like is like, again, you're going a step too far. Or in terms of just like my personal taste is when you're fighting like sentient turds, you know what I mean? And there's like a whole bunch of like there's just like a fucking log of shit rolling towards you. I'm just like, this is just fucking disgusting. I don't like I don't like looking at this. There's also like as a cat lover, there's a lot of stuff to contend with in this game where like, you know, you're sending them out to battle, which is fine. I like that's not what's bothering me. That seems kind of cute. It's like cute. And like, you know, I get like, you know, sending creatures to battle like Pokemon. I understand that I'm not thinking about it in that way because I don't think that's funny or interesting. Right. Watching them get hurt kind of makes me sad. There's because like they get fucking it'll say that, like, you know, I had a cat named Tiger actually in the in the first round, like, oh, Tiger, like broke a rib. And I'm like, that's like too specific. Yeah, that's like I'm scared for him. Yeah. And then like when you, you know, you you when you experience a full party wipe, you don't see those cats again. They're just dead. No. Yeah. I mean, like so this is like it is very much a disposable heroes thing, which is the thing I talked about as a plus with Darkest Dungeon when we were talking rogue lights with rogue light RPGs with Sam Richardson. I actually like that aspect of it from a design standpoint. I like that like there's permadeath. I like that the you go through one run with your cats, your party of cats. And then they're just retired. They can never adventure again. I think that's like really compelling. And I think that like incentivizes things like, hey, I'm going to be apply a degree of caution with this run so I don't lose everything. And but also I'm going to accept if I lose everything that I just got to move on. I just got to keep going. Like I like that. I just as a design principle, I just don't like the way it's it's visually realized. You know, I mean, like I don't like the. Yeah, seeing these cats mangled. I don't like hearing them ground up when you when you get when you donate them. No. You know, I mean, it's just like and again, it's played for laughs. It's meant to be like, haha. But it's kind of like the Monty Python joke with Mr. Creosote exploding where it's just like, I mean, this is just kind of body horror at a certain point. Yeah. Just kind of gruesome hit me with the silly walk again. I'll take that silly walk any day of the week. None of the people are doing the silly walk anymore. Nobody's saying Fee Fife O'Fum. Nobody's doing a silly walk. We're bringing back the Ministry of Silly Walks. If he did it, I might not regret voting. If you like made Dr. Oz silly walk because he'd do it. Yeah, I was like, sick of fan. Of course you do. I do think it's interesting that you can, you know, you have because then you have this other this other element where you have the pipes, right? So like, and there's people in the pipes that like the pipes take you to different areas. And so there's like the one guy can't remember. I can't remember his name, like the the masked guy. There's a bunch of NPCs. So yes, what Matt's describing. So there's this rogue light adventuring thing where you go through with your RPG party, you have this tactical combat and then between each run, you will be back at your home. You play this animal hoarder who has a bunch of cats. And then you are upgrading your domicile to create more space and comfort for your ever growing collection of cats. Yeah. But then also you'll just reach capacity at a certain point and you need to get rid of some of them. So depending on what type of cat it is, certain NPCs are asking for them. They will use them to upgrade what they have available to offer you. Yes. So like what like, for instance, the shopkeeper, the woman who runs the shops who you'll run out into the during a run as well, wants cats that are older than six years old. Yeah. If you send her a senior cat, then you can eventually send her like 10 of those and then she has new items available in her shop. That was the first one I upgraded because I was like, this seems like a no brain, a no brainer to me. I like knowing that there's somewhere else and that they're OK. It's sadder to me when I can't take them somewhere. But then, you know, you can't become too attached to them because like you can keep, you don't have to put any in the, as far as I know, you don't have to engage with that system, right? Of the upgrades of things like that. It's like beneficial to do so. But like you don't have to put every cat. Like if you like were fond of one of the cats, you could just keep them in your house and like have that cat get older. Yeah. And breed. I don't know what happens if they get too old. They die. They eventually die. Oh, yeah. No. I mean, like you can't keep any of these cats indefinitely. So I mean, that's just the thing you have to, again, I like this from a game design standpoint. Yeah, that is interesting. But it is like a and it's a thing you have to accept. But I also imagine you had a. On your Animal Crossing Island, you walked into like Dom's house and you just fucking dead. Tom died of old age. Dom the sheep with the tie-dye shirt. Who like to work out fucking dead, dead at three. Because it's like the sheep's lifespan or some shit. Yeah, I mean, it's so yeah, that's the thing you have to deal with. I don't know what the maximum age is, but when they start getting in the high teens, you know, it's like it's there's always a risk they'll just die of old age. And then. You know, you have to dispose of them. There are certain. There is one NPC who wants dead cats, which is something you can even pull from, pull from a failed run or those go automatically. You don't have to engage with that. There's a lot to do. Like there's like, I mean, the tactics of it all is interesting, but I like that there are different classes also. And so like loading out, you're like, I mean, you start with four in particular. And like, I've gotten extra classes as I've gone along. And from what I heard, you keep getting them up through the mid game. There's a bunch of classes. Like I think the last one I unlocked was Necromancer. Oh, cool. Really cool. And that's a, but I also have not figured out how to optimize it yet. So I know that's the issue that I'm running into, actually, is that like I'm sort of used to the first four. So I keep doing runs with the first four and it's like been working out quite well. But like I only had my first full party wipe like recently, I was able to make it through like the first few runs, like with no trouble, really. Like I was getting hurt and banged up a little bit, but I was succeeding getting back like I in my first hard run, because there's different paths you can take. So you start in the alley, I think, right? And then you're working your way to the sewer is the next level. After sub, after another run through the sewer, you're able to unlock the hard path, which is like a shortcut, but it is harder. But you get better items and different, you know, upgrades along the way and stuff. But like that first hard run, I made it about halfway through and just got worked. Yeah, there's always an exit. So the advantage of the hard run is from what I've played, it feels like the hard run is always worth taking once it's unlocked. There's an extra combat encounter, at least one. And again, the way that the game is designed, I really like this. There aren't experience points. Instead, every time you finish a combat encounter, one of your cats randomly levels up. So just that's how you gain levels. So that's like, over the course of a run, it's like three additional levels. If you think about three additional combat encounters, if you're taking the hard path all the way through all the biomes until you get to the final boss. Yeah. And when you level up, you get four options. And I think that like they're pretty good about like sign posting, which option is like a good option for you? Like there's usually like three to choose from for your particular class. So you got to then figure out like which one is going to make sense for your run. Yeah. There are ones that are, that are, you know, attack, defense, movement. There are ones that are not class specific. Yeah. But that can sometimes synergize really well with a class or with other abilities in your party. But it's all that stuff is great. I, you know, you said it already. It's a genius design. Like it's like, it's such a fun game that I'm going to keep playing it despite not liking any of how it looks. Like, I know. Yeah. If there was a total conversion mod, I could, I could apply to make it look like Hello Kitty, I would do it immediately. There is like a button that you can press that you have to hold that sort of changes what the field looks like. Uh-huh. But I'm like, I'm not going to hold this. Yeah. Right. Make it so I don't have to hold, but it's also like it's less interesting. Actually, that actually is really useful. Yeah. That's just the tactical view and what basically that is because there's so much art going on. It's so busy. Yeah. There are times when I'm just like, you just can't even see all the enemies. You can't even see all the characters on the screen. Yeah. And so that lets you see just the grid and just some simplified iconography of where enemies, player characters and, you know, environmental obstacles are. And there'll sometimes be like a bad cat on the thing. A lot of times it's like rats and poop and. Right. Fish or whatever the fuck, but like occasionally it'll be like a cat. And like, if you're not paying attention, you'll be like, oh, wait, it's oh, no, that's a, that's the bad one. I can't like, you know, I'm working my way toward that. Um, I do like. I wish I love playing it on my steam deck, but I want to play it on my TV. Like I wish they had like, there was like, it was on other things, uh, or this infernal steam machine would come out. Uh, cause I think it'd be fun to play, uh, you know, with a controller on a television. I'm playing it. I mean, I could probably, have I given you my old gaming rig? You gave me an old, old one. I gave you an old, old one. Yes. Okay. Uh, and I have it, but we got to know about my desk. Yeah. It's covered. I got it. I'm like, actively like every couple of weeks I like clean the desk. Yeah. And I'm like, I'm going to sit at this desk. And I'm just like, work, I work everywhere in my apartment, but at my desk. I don't know what that is. I just say, I bet you could, I bet you like put a 30, 60 in that, but like a, like a decent, you know, mid range graphics card that you can get, spend not too much money on and maybe some more ram, although ram's gotten super expensive. And you could run Mugenics pretty easily. Okay. The most resource intensive game. I might have to look into it. Cause yeah, like, maybe I'll have to ask our old pal Sam for some help. Cause I'll say this, I think it plays really well with mouse and keyboard. Like it's just, it's such a cursor based design. I've been using the track pads on the steam deck and that's been fun. I could, I, but I could see how it's probably more optimally designed for mouse and keyboard versus a controller. Cause sometimes it's like, I have to, uh, you know, like swipe all the way over then click, it's like two separate movements to do one thing when I could be doing one movement for, for the one thing. The soundtrack, I think feels, it feels like it should be discussed. The music is incredible. It's so good. There just when you not get enough of the soundtrack, the music is like, it's great. It is so good. It's like cuphead level, like just, just work of art. Just like, get me a fucking record of this. It's almost as if it's an apology for how the game looks in general. Like, hey, we're sorry. Sonically, though, you're going to fucking love this. No, you're right. It is a little asynchronous because it's so like gorgeous and so like, I mean, again, I don't want to be too harsh on this because, but, but like, you know, and also like you're criticizing comedy and you're criticizing writing as a comedy writer. It's like, this is the most subjective shit. Obviously this is connecting with a lot of people. Obviously this is selling huge. What do I know? I'll say it's gotten me a couple of times. I'll laugh. It has, it has some times, but, but, but I, to me, that's few and far between. And I just, I generally think there's a lot of whiffs here, but just like you look at the quality level of dialogue versus the quality level of the lyricism in the songs and it's just like they're, they're night and day. I mean, they're such, it's just such clever lyricism versus like kind of clunky dated writing, you know what I mean? It kind of feels like the songs are good on accident. Like they're like, they're like accidentally like, oh, these are actually really good songs. I like all that stuff. And the music is because what happens is that you've got like basically one track, it's kind of like Super Mario World does a similar thing where it's the same theme that's being repeated just in like different variations throughout. And, you know, if you have Yoshi, it adds like a drum layer. So it's kind of like the same sort of sonic bed is kind of like following you throughout a run, but then you will reach a boss. Yeah. And then they will all of a sudden turn into like a cuphead style like song, like swing song. And they're, they're really great. They're just like, they're totally like super duper hummable. And yeah, I look forward to them every time. I'm so excited when they start playing. I'm trying to do something with sonic bed. Yeah, let's see. I'm fast. Yeah. It kind of got us sleep fast. It's got to hit snooze. Tails is sleeping over in the sonic bed. Yeah. Maybe something there. My other bed is a chili dog. Yeah. This yeah. Chili stains in the covers because he's not what it looks like. I wouldn't. That's pretty good. I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating chili dogs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A classic. I forgot what game we were discussing. Mugenics. Mugenics. I also like that the meows are all obviously voiced by human beings. There's like a long list of voice like people that contributed voices to it. One of which is Rivers Cuomo from Weezer. That's really funny. And I'm just like, I need to know how and why that happened. I'm very curious. The composer for this game, just to shout them out, is Radiculon. Radiculon made the soundtrack for Binding of Isaac and its DLCs. Matthias Bossi, John Evans, I'm seeing here and are the composers. And, you know, I'm not super familiar with their work, but the score for Mugenics is fucking incredible. It's it's so good. So basically, as this game progresses, you're just continually staggered by how much content is in here. So like you mentioned, the branching paths, there's that. Like how you go or say you didn't mention the branching path. So you talked about just like going through a run and like you're kind of in, you know, you start in the alley, then you go to the sewer and then below the sewer is. I forget what that biome is, but the but the there's another path where you can go from the alley to the junkyard and then from the junkyard to the boneyard. And all these feel completely different. Like the boneyard is like spooky scary. And it's like anything of like, again, you're in the sewer. That's where there's like a lot of a lot of shit stuff, a lot of fetuses, which I don't know what like this fetus fixation comes from. But like, I don't like the look of the fetuses and they're all just kind of gross. Yeah. Anyway, so that's where a lot of that shit is. But if you go like the the boneyard, it's like, oh, this is like kind of fun, like sort of spooky, scary stuff. I'm having fun here. And so like once you finish, once you go through all of Act One or once you go through all of this, you don't even necessarily realize you're in Act One. There's an act to act to you start off in the desert. And the desert is like, I think this is downright like appealing. I like I like I like this. There's like a cute little cacti and shit. Like, I wish the game was all consistently like this. I wish it didn't have so much time in the muck or maybe just like the cat shitting in the house is enough muck and we don't need the the gross out stuff beyond that. I guess because like as a guy with cats, I know they do that. Yeah, they do that. If it wasn't in the game, I would be like, where's all this shit in the house? There's a version where that's abstracted as well, where there's a litter box and you have to empty the litter box or something like that. Yeah, it has like a fill meter or something. And it's the same amount of or you just have to make sure there's enough litter boxes in the house to catch the shit. And yeah, there's a same amount of should be two for every one cat, which I think really. Is that true? They say or it should be one one extra for every cat. So if you have two, you should have three litter boxes, they say. Wow. Yeah, I didn't know that. That's what they say. Do you put them all in the same room? I typically do because I'm like, I can't have them all over the place. Because what's the issue? Because like if they if you only have one or they just are certain points like I'm not going in there. They get tired of the like, especially if you're slow to slow to. They don't want to shit on their own shit. Yeah, they're like, I'll go to the nice one. It was a pain. I have this little robot and like I had to like train them into doing it. And it was awful for like a week because I had to keep one bad box. Then I wasn't scooping intentionally so that they would then have to like out of necessity. Use the brand new litter robot. Yeah, it's a nightmare. Having animals that shit in your house, not worth the trade off of them loving you forever. They're no, they're the best. I love them more than anything. This game, I mean, it's it's you know, it's isometric, which I again, the every every aspect of this from a game plays. Yeah, I was just like very much for me. Like I just wish it like looked like XCOM or look like Final Fantasy tactics and that it didn't have things like the aforementioned shopkeeper, who's I guess like a broad parody of like a caricature of a of a social justice warrior feminist from like the Gamergate era. Yeah, which is again, just kind of like just kind of cringe and embarrassing. And then just also like like dated and also what side are you on, dude? And anyway, but like like like there's things like she'll say things like your speciesist is just like I get what you're doing. Yeah. And again, I'm not offended. It's just kind of like I'm not touching you comedy. You know what I mean? Like I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you. It's like, dude, shut up. What are you triggered? Like, no, you're being fucking annoying. Yeah, it's like I just don't like this. That stuff is always just like I just like can't click through dialogue fast. Yeah, I just like I basically not reading the dialogue for the most part. Yeah, I want to get to my run. I want to get back to doing that stuff. But then there's things like there's, you know, like there is what are called House Bosses and one of the first thing you're going to do is Geatina. Yeah. And if you're going to get any of it. Yeah. And like your introduction to Geatina, she's biting a cat's head off and you can't like avoid that. It's just a thing you have to and like whatever. There's goer in games like I am not averse to that. But yeah, there's something just there's like a there's like a cruelty to this. There's kind of like a ha ha look at what's happening to something innocent for no reason, which I just again, for me, doesn't work necessarily. It would, you know, I don't want to belabor this point, but like I think you think of it looked different. I wouldn't be so turned off by it. And I love it. That's the thing I'm so like. This is this speaks to how good it has to be like this good for me to keep playing. That's exactly it. It's so good that I'm putting aside that if I didn't like if I didn't like playing this game, I would we won't be doing this episode to just wouldn't be like I would never touch this again. I can't wait to go home and play. I'm excited to play it tonight. No, I'm going to keep playing. I'm fine. I might play it tonight depending on when we get home and when we get out of here. And I'm definitely playing it tomorrow. I got time budgeted to play this game tomorrow. Yeah, it's so compelling. What about on Saturday? I'm not sure what I'm doing on Saturday yet. But if you had the time, you might. If I have the time on Saturday, I'm like, yeah, I'm going to play a little. Yeah, yeah, why not? Why wouldn't I? Sunday. What's the Lord's Day? Yeah, you'll be in church. I'll be in church most of the day. Get seven a.m. service. No, when you get up at four thirty, so you can start praying. I start praying at four thirty and then I go do 18 holes of golf. Then I come home and cook breakfast for some kids. Not mine. I don't have kids. But just some kids. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Then I pray some more. Then I go to church. Yeah. Play some more golf, go back to church. Yeah. Yeah. So it's a full day. I go lifting. You're not going to go on Sunday. You're not going to play on Sunday. I'm not going to play on Sunday. No, no, no, no. It's OK. I'm going to play on Sunday. If it fits into my calendar. Well, yeah. I got to go to the gym. I got to play some golf. I got to pray. See, how fast you can make that eighteenth hole. I can do I can do my ice plunge. So I try to go to the shirt. Or else these fucking psychos. Yeah. Yeah. A calendar. I got to post them doing all this. Yes. Yeah. That's a whole other part of it. It's like a Mark Wahlberg, the rock, Paul Walter, Hauser, who else has done this. All three basically the same kind of guy. Just I'm a Christian guy who also has a career show business. Let me just say this before anybody. If you're Christian, that's fine. It's fine. Just don't be weird. And don't be a fuckhead. Don't try to fucking ruin the world. Ranch, you've been playing some eugenics. I have. What do you think? I because I mean, your first impression was it was it was a classic. Rachelle, this game is crazy. Text to the group chat. Yes. I like it. I think I was also kind of turned off by the. I don't know what to call the type of art that you're saying like two thousands. Yeah. Yeah. Edgy, edgy art was a little bit nostalgic for me to see stuff like that. But I really like the mechanics. Like it was kind of reminding me of Magic the Gathering, actually. Oh, right. The way all the ability stack and stuff. Yeah, there's such a huge volume. It's funny because I think Macmillan mentioned Magic the Gathering in some context in some interview. My name is triple click where where. Yeah, just the idea of just like you throw in so many systems like it's like more is more. It's this maximalist approach to design where then you can get to see all these interplays of these different you know, possibilities that that maybe you didn't even anticipate as a designer, but that's part of the fun. Yeah, I think that's a that's a great that's a great characterization for sure. And the thing that I love about Magic is like I'm not necessarily playing to win, but like kind of the joy of it for me. And I think maybe a lot of players just like seeing how it plays out. Yeah, seeing what happens. Yeah, for sure. That's awesome. So like the cat's dying. Does it doesn't bother me? Well, you're famously a dog person. No, it doesn't bother me either. I like that. And I actually had a moment because, you know, if your cat gets downed in combat, they get an injury injury like Matt was saying. So like, like I feel like I can't remember if this it was actually tearing an ACL over just a tendon tear. So I had like a cat do something like that. They were downed. It was an it was an encounter where I had a necromancer and a cleric. And then my cleric got downed and my necromancer could like explode corpses and accidentally exploded my own cat. And it was like one of those things where it's just like there's and there's a version where it's just like, well, shit, I just killed one of my useful party members by accident. But there's those parts like it's kind of funny. Yeah, it is funny. And that's the thing, like when the game is funny, it's things like that. You know what I mean? It's not the intentional comedy necessarily. Oh, I mean, that is intentional comedy. You can't for that. That that that interworking of things is funny, but less so like a joke that's in dialogue, I guess. I find a lot of the names to be pretty fun. A lot of the names are fun. Yeah, and there's a lot of them. If that was just that. And it's just like the names run the gambit from like Burrito to Sir Fussy Fuss. Yeah, to like like like Bernard Shaw, you know, it's like I think there was one that was like Mr. Chips or something. I was like, that's pretty good. It was great. Yeah. I something like that moves, Mr. something. But the fact that this game, you know, is designed to be a sort of like run based, like sort of like not necessarily endless, but like, you know, you could be playing it forever kind of thing. I would suspect that there's a lot of names. And that's to me kind of interesting that they didn't have to come up with all these names. Yeah, I wonder how much I've been able to hold from a spreadsheet on your algorithmically generated. I mean, I have a feeling it's just like, you know, Oh, sure. Maybe some of it, especially like a mystery. Randomization. It'll be like, OK, this one's Mr. Burrito. Yeah, sure. Burrito, Burrito Junior. Yeah. Hmm. This game sucks. It's legitimately an astounding game because it is like, it is like we're saying it is really fun, despite the things about it we don't like. Yeah, I mean, I can't remember the last game I had this sort of reaction to, you know, because I feel like there for a lot of games, this would just be so off putting that I just like you were saying earlier, I just play it once and be like, this isn't for me. Right. And I don't know. It's you don't just kind of like, I don't know if this is a perfect comparison, but it's kind of like, hey, this guy is an incredible photographer. He's just like the best photographer. He's he's just like incredible. It like just the way he uses light and shadow, the way he uses perspective and composition, like it's mastery of lenses is unparalleled. This is like from a technical standpoint, like the best photographer there is. Like, oh, wow, that's cool. Like what is what is he photographs like a clogged toilets. You know what I mean? It's just like you could be the best, but the subject of it is important at a certain level when you're dealing with something artistic. And it's just like, like I would not hang a it doesn't matter how artful it was. I probably would not hang a photo of a of a clogged toilet in my home. You know what I mean? No, no, not a second one, certainly. I get the real thing in front of me. I mean, photograph, I lived it. I do think that there is something to say, though, because, you know, like we do talk about like other video game tours on this show, right? Yeah. And so I do sort of have to give it up that like he like found a thing and it's like this is sort of this is my lane. This is my thing. This is what I do. I'm the gross out guy. Yeah. I'm the, you know, I haven't listened to an interview with this guy yet. I don't know if he like owns the edge lord thing or not, or would even call it that himself. He seems kind of a little more gentle than that. I think it's a little I don't know. I don't know anything about the guy's politics. I bet some of it is unfortunately available. Yeah. But I like I even looked at the social media or anything like that. But he seems like a kind of gentle soul, at least in his interviews. And he's from any game, the movie. I mean, we certainly remember from there, even though he's in there and kind of more of workaholic mode. But it is interesting that as a creative, he has taken so many risks in terms of the type of game he's making. Yeah. Like it wasn't Super Meat Boy and then he made like six Super Meat Boy games, which a lot of people would have done. And in fact, the rest of the development team seemed to have been more interested in doing that. Yeah. He made Super Meat Boy was like, OK, I kind of explored a platform or precision platform or let's try something else. Yeah. Finding him as a completely different type of game, you know, kind of like it has a huge part in how rogue likes becoming so. He's such a dominant genre of the era. Some of his other designs I haven't played, you know, and I'm less familiar with. But it seems like he's trying something different every time. And certainly Mugenics, like again, he could have done Binding of Isaac, too. Yeah. And that game would have been huge. But instead, he's like, let's try something completely different. Let's try something instead of real time combat instead of instead of a character action game, we're going to make something that is a tactics game. And a lot of people wouldn't do that. A lot of a lot of developers will not take that risk. They'd be like, I have my one thing that I do. It's kind of like almost like a Peter Malinu from, you know, for someone who worked in the more in the the AAA Studio System side, but how he has no tour would kind of do something different with each of his designs from like populist to, you know, ultimately fable and every game in between black and white. I'm trying to remember some of the other ones. Yeah. And it's some some worked and some didn't, but he was always taking big swings. So he's he's making he's making he's really evolving there on that side creatively. But just like, you know, from an aesthetic standpoint, he's kind of still stuck in the era when he was making browser games. And I don't know. I just it's kind of strange that those things coexist. And to me, I'm sort of thinking about it like almost like Wes Anderson, not like the way not in a similar that they're in any way similar. Yeah. But like, Wes has been doing not necessarily what he's doing now this whole time. But like, once he's sort of locked into this type of thing, this is all he does now. Like he's like making perfect little dire. Every scene is a perfect little diorama and stuff like that. And now this guy, Ed McMillan here, is like, I'm like that, but for like gross shit. And like, I don't know, like, it's not my taste. It's not like, which here's the other thing. It's weirdly not my taste. No, yeah. It kind of seems like on paper that like we should like like like like it kind of like. I'm no stranger to body fluid humor. You know what I mean? Like like like I have necessarily don't necessarily have an aversion with something being scatological. Just like we all kind of draw our own lines at a certain point where it goes from being funny to gross. Yeah. It's it's kind of like for me, when Wario farts or when Shrek farts, that's funny. Yeah. But when Austin Powers drinks diarrhea, I'm like, this is fucking disgusting. You know what I mean? Like it's like it's like that's like a step too far. Yeah. And so I just am like, it's the same sort of thing here. This is very much living in pushing that that scatological side as far as possible. And scatological isn't the only thing that it has. It also has again, just like a lot of animal violence, a lot of just general cruelty that that just like none of that stuff. Some of it just like feels like punching down to me. Yeah, I agree. The guy knows to make a good game. But it's good. It's fucking good. It's crazy. It's just like it's it's you wish you didn't have to recommend something with a bunch of butts. Like I wish like I have friends who I know would love the gameplay, who would just not be able to get over. Like like, you know, animals are being hurt in the same or that, you know, or that like this is fucking disgusting. This is like this feels like Gamergate shit. You know what I mean? Like I think they're they're people who would just be like off put by this tonally. It's going to be like recommending Napa Boys to a normie friend. Well, it's like a pair of this and an apple. No, no, no, no, of course. And I think it's a lot more self aware and do what it's doing. Absolutely. But but it's like it's just like taste is such a huge element of this stuff. And and and I wish there were or even people who I'm like, I've talked to have been like, you know, I was talking to my brother about this game and I think he would like this game. But I just felt like I had to be like, yeah, and you know, it's got a lot of stuff. You kind of just kind of look past because I know he's going to kind of roll his eyes at that. Yeah, he's like while you're doing this, he's like giving you a noogie. Pulled my pants down. It's back. But but I'm going to keep playing it. I'm going to keep playing. And maybe my opinion will shift. And it is it is not every single like aspect of the game that is something that's disgusting, you know what I mean? Like there are there are things like, you know, like, like, again, there are certain enemies that are a little bit more conventional or a little bit more like on the cute side or if they're gross, they're gross in a different way. There's not every ability is something like what's what's the I'm trying to think of some of the ones that that are, you know, like some of them involve like maggots and stuff. But yeah, you can not all like that. You can move a tile and like you're fucking dragging your little worm infested little ass like across the battlefield and then you spawn like a worm familiar and it's like gross. It's kind of gross. But I do like again, I like a mechanically the idea of like I'm developing a hoard or something like that. It's a great idea. It's cool. But it was like so like but not everything is like that. Yeah. And then there's also just like so many abilities per class and so many classes and so many ways to combine them and things that you get like the like a caller that lets you randomize what class it is. You can have like two tanks, you know, in a you can have redundancy in terms of class based on how that rolls. I mean, all that is super fun. Yeah, that you get to like there's things like there's ways to target upgrades towards certain cats or there's way to, you know, things like you'll get a certain ability for the professor, a certain device, a certain gadget from a professor that you can use to change a run in a different way. Like all that shit is super duper fun. Yeah. And there's just so many possibilities and so many ways to iterate on this. And just like like what Michelle was saying in the Magic of the Anthony sense, a big part of the fun of here is just experimentation. Yeah. And finding the different like equipable items and stuff like that can make so many items. Yeah. There's a lot of items and I think that stuff is really fun. But like, I don't know, like I think overall I'd recommend the game. Like it is like a good game. I think it's a great game. It's going to ultimately for me be one of probably one of my favorite games of the year. Yeah. I see myself playing a lot of it just in the same way I played some other rogue lights like the you know, the aforementioned into the breach way subset games or their other game. Yeah. They're the game for, you know, FTL almost said for the win. It's not called for the win. The game is not called. I'm thinking of burgers. I'm thinking of the burger place for the win because we're coming up on dinner time and I'm getting hungry. Yeah. And no, I might get a burger. You might get a burger. You deserve it. At a burrito for lunch. Being a little fucking pig. What kind of burrito? Chillurino burrito. That's an elite choice. You're a fuck with one of those. Yeah. Good. That's good shit. Yeah. I knew he knew ball. I was gonna get that carne asada, carnitas. No, no, no. Chillurino. Yeah. Oh fuck. All right. Secret option. Yeah. I got a different food. An entirely different meal inside a burrito. It's basically like getting a corn dog inside of a burrito. It's like getting like a spaghetti sandwich. Like you can do that. What's in that chicken pot pie sushi? What the hell? I'd be curious if any of our listeners, there must be some who are like, like, oh, no, I do really like this. I think I like, I just have a really, you know, whatever. I have a childlike sense of humor. That's why I like your show. I think what I think is funny is what a toddler thinks is funny. And so this all like really works for me and none of it really grosses me out. I do think that I'd be curious if there were people like that. I do think that it's going to be funny. The reaction to people think like hearing us be like, it's too gross for us. Yeah, sure. And they're like, you guys, you talk about sucking off Gators on your other show. Yeah. Your episodes always begin with a sketch. And usually the joke is that one of you is jacking off. Or has diarrhea. Instead of these are subjective. And we have to. Of course. And you know, it's, you know, we like, we like the smell of our own. Yeah, sure. Like it's fine when we do it. Well, no, I, but yes, I think that's fair. But I think there's also like just an element of like this game is kind of rubbing your nose in it. And it's kind of inescapable and omnipresent at times. I sort of wish it was just the tactics. Like because that is fun enough to me. Yeah, the actual combat engine is so good. Yeah. And just the combination of that and then the way that you level characters up in all the various classes. I mean, that that's just is like so compelling. Yeah. A version of this without any dialogue and with different art would be like, you know, an all timer for me. Yeah. Yeah. Should we do a segment? Let's do a segment. This is a new segment, guys. A new segment is a new segment. Something. OK, so what people don't know is that we pitched this segment in this week's upcoming DLC. Oh, so that episode is not out yet. That episode is not out yet. So over on our Patreon, patreon.com slash get played or get played DLC. We have an episode called Format, Format, Format. Yes. Where we're trying to come up with new formats. We're deciding which ones we're maybe going to do in the future. Yes. And this is all format who helps put our shows together. That's right. So I was like, OK, let's just take one of these for a test drive as a segment. And this one is called Do We Like This Guy? Do we like this guy? So this is the thing we talked about in Format, Format, Format, which is that basically we'll look at a guy from a game. Yes. And decide based on, I guess, visually, but then maybe on some some biographical details, I don't know what we have to work with here. Yeah. We'll decide if we like this guy. I will say that it is mostly visual, but then it's also I maybe editorialized a little bit based on my own experience with them. OK, great. That's that's helpful, too. So there's also maths characterization. Yeah. And this is all resident. This is Resident Evil Edition. Do we like this guy? Do we like this guy? We have a little PowerPoint. All right. And I did put I put this together. Wow. I did this myself and you can tell right away because it is basically black text on white background the entire way. It's the job done. Yeah, exactly. It has all conveys all the right information. OK, so do we like this guy? First up, we have this is Resident Evil Edition. Yeah, it was an evil addition. Leon S. Kennedy. Here's some details about him. The S stands for Scott. He's in Resident Evil 2, 4, 6 and 9. And probably some other ones, too, but those are like the main ones. He became the face of the franchise after two sort of people like associate him with the franchise and he can roundhouse kick. Major plus on that last one, one of our top kicks. Yeah, one of the top kicks for sure. And look, obviously he looks cool as hell. He's a fucking stud. This guy, I think we like this guy. I gotta say we like this guy. I think we like Leon S. Kennedy. Not that I like every player character, but a big like thing in the plus column for me also is is just like it's play. They're playable. You know, you develop an affinity for them. Yeah, you spend a lot. I like this guy. Leon is an all time playable character. But also at a glance, I'd be like, that guy's cool. Oh, yeah. That guy looks like he'd be played by Austin Butler. Oh, yeah, I want his fit. Yeah, he looks great. His fit goes extremely hard. Full jacket. He's got that gun, too. It's casually holding that gun. Yeah, I'm not even thinking about it. Tactical pants, boots. It's a great fit. And the fingerless gloves, too. I was going to say, could be make or break. Yeah. Go either way. But I think he pulls them off. The hair with kind of the, you know, it's kind of a frosted tips kind of a almost a Karen haircut. Kind of a Karen haircut. It's about to complain to the manager. It's a plantation. Everybody in here has La Plaga. Where's the manager? No, Leon. That's maybe a little dated, but still he looks good. Yeah, looking guy. Leon's great. I like I like this guy. Rochelle, do you like this guy? I love this guy. Hell yeah. We love Leon. All right. We like Leon. Next up, Claire Redfield. Claire Redfield. Resident Evil 2. In my playthrough, she basically saves the whole day because you play Leon first and then she kind of comes into the story and she's just kind of she's just a person. She's not she's not a cop. Right. Over plus. Plus there. But I think she's awesome, very capable, you know, strong lead character, energy and I think she rocks and she's got a cool fit also. She got a cool red leather jacket holding two guns in this photo. And she's not she's not bad to look at either. No, she's she's a mega babe. I like Claire Redfield quite a bit. I mean, this is the thing like I'm pretty early on. These are kind of easy for me to get on board with. I know these characters and, you know, this isn't this isn't like a complete clean slate to me. This is a yeah, it's someone that I inherently have a lot of affection for. So yeah, I like this guy or this this person. Yes, I do think they're we'll just say they're all guys guys. Guy guy in the sense like in the generic sort of like that's a guy guy. A genderless guy is genderless. Yeah, it's it's non-binary. Yeah. As a term. And I also think the name Claire Redfield is good. It's a good name. I was trying to remember if Claire is in Marvel versus Capcom, but I think it's Jill Valentine. Yeah, I could be I could be wrong. Maybe Claire is playable in one of my camera. If we hear from Jill on this, but we like we like Claire. Ranch, do you like Claire? I like Claire. OK, great. Hell yeah. Next we have Albert Wesker. I put he's basically the main bad guy, but is just a guy. He's wearing sunglasses and he's a Tom Cruise and collateral looking ass. Yeah, that's a nice bit of a tort editorializing that I think is is a good way to describe him. I don't like this guy. I don't like him either. I kind of think it's all his fault. Yeah, I mean, he learned from that. He's a bad guy. He's really bad. But I also like you look at you're looking at this guy and like he'd be like a citizen guarding a polling place. You know what I mean? Albert Wesker would for sure join ice. Yes, yeah, yeah. We don't like Albert Wesker. Fuck that. We don't like Albert Wesker. Right. Ranch, Ranch, you like this guy? I think it's kind of hot. I look he's not bad to look at. No, no, no, no, no, no. Tom Cruise and collateral looking at. It's OK to like this guy. Yeah, look, you can like him. But fuck guys. Hell yeah, of course. Fuck guys. Mr. X. Now, here's the thing. There's some bad guys on the list. Yeah, he's from Resident Evil 2, of course. He wears a hat and a trench coat. Big. Big is important. And he does follow you around. And I will say I did say earlier, I think he's maybe the scariest guy in any game. I think he's really, really scary. I think he's scarier than Pyramid Head. He's it. Oh, I wouldn't go that far. He's inarguably very scary. I haven't played the remake. Maybe he's that spooky. And I just think because he follows you around, I guess there's a looming presence of Pyramid Head everywhere, but like. He's Pyramid Heads where he's at. The reason Pyramid Head I find to be so scary is because you're like, what is that? Yes. Whereas here I'm like, that's a big scary guy. But here I was like, what is what is going on with this freak? You can sort of reverse engineer why he exists. Right. Like, obviously he's some science experiment gone. I would say mostly right. Yeah. But, you know, science experiment nonetheless. Let me let me echo ranch here. I think he's kind of low key. He's got something, right? Like he's got he's got like we can't zoom in on it, but I would say extremely kissable lips. If I if I saw this guy. Mr. X's and O's. Plenty of smacker is on that guy. Mr. Future X. That's not going to work out. No, it'll be bad for you, but yeah, some good memories. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good stories. I'm going to say I like this guy. I think I like Mr. X, too. Yeah. Ranch, what do you think? He looks like a steroid Freddy Krueger. He is definitely on. He definitely on Roy's incredible ranch. You're right. You're right. I don't like him. Oh, you don't like him. That's OK. I just feel like if I saw this guy like on the bus, I'd be like, look at that guy. Like, I think he was kind of cool. You would be a little scary, but I think he was kind of cool. You would notice and then not think twice. Yeah, that's that's right. But I would not be. I would like look at him, but I wouldn't want to look at him too much because I don't know what this guy is going to do. But I like that he's made some strong choices. Yeah, and I like that he supports public transit. Yeah, that's fun. All right, next we have Ada Wong. I like this guy. Yeah. OK, next one. You know, I will say she's a bit of a double agent. Yes. Right. In Resident Evil 2, in particular, she kind of screws you over a little bit, but she kind of comes back in Resident Evil 4, helps you out quite a bit. And she's got a grappling hook. Yeah. And if I may possibly one of the hottest characters ever made. It's enough for me. Yeah. I'd say, yeah, I like this guy. Yeah, I like this guy. Ranch. Yeah. She looks just like my kindergarten's best friend's mom. Wow. I have to be in contact. She's a guest on the show next week. It's Facebook friend her please. OK, Ramon Salazar. Fuck this guy. OK, he's Resident Evil 4. He's a little freak. He's a little fancy guy. Yes. Is canonically 20 years old. Which I learned today in the wiki. He's a little guy. He's a little old man looking. But. Are the Resident Evil wiki it said he was born in 1984. He dies in 20 in 2004. Wow. In the in the in the game. I did not know that. You know, he looks a lot like we're talking about boys. He looks a lot like like squirm and the nap of this character. Literally just thinking the same thing. And I need the Paul Rust Ramon Salazar mod. And just before everybody says anything, I sign off on this. I think it's fine. I think I don't like this guy. I don't like him either. I think he's fucking he's he's a look. He is like your character as a little freak. Yeah. But then I'm also like when I you have to fight him like it's just like I don't want to deal with this. I don't want to deal with this. And I think the worst thing about him is that he's fancy. Yeah, he's like, I don't know. I don't I'm sick of his shit. Honestly, I think he's fucking at this guy. We hate this guy. Ranch, what do you think? No, I hate this guy. I mean, I'm listening. He is just a kid. Yes, right. He could learn. Well, he's 20. He's an adult. OK, I have a hard time saying this one. Is it Lady Dimitrescu? Yeah, let me I don't know if the the C.U. is voice. Lady Dimitrescu. OK. She's from Resident Evil Village, Tall Lady, Big Hat. Mean I haven't played this one. I have not also played this game, but I'm quite familiar with a large lady. This is a big time like this guy. Like this guy for sure. Absolutely. Can we get a Lady Dimitrescu scale version of Ada Wong, please? It's my one request. I really snapped on this one. Like, I remember when the game came out, I was like, everybody was talking about Big Lady. It's so funny when people immediately all get horny for the same thing. The big lady like, we want it. Yeah, we want it. We need that. Wait, what? Everyone loves a big lady across all genders. Yeah. Everyone's horny for a big lady. Ranch, what do you think of big lady? I love big lady. And then finally, we have the merchant who's obviously not here to defend himself. But obviously the Resident Evil 4 merchant, he has items for sale. And he is on our show. Those are sort of the big two things we know about him. I have to say I like this guy, not just because the Resident Evil merchant from Resident Evil 4 is a constant presence on Get Played, but also because I'm a little scared of what he's up to. I am sort of worried that he's going to get all of us in trouble by proxy. But I also think, you know, I would say this to his face, even. Yeah. I think it's a little bit sort of rare fried air, not unlike astronauts and SNL cast members. Very few iconic video game merchants. Right. And I think he's chief among them. I think he's one of the most iconic merchants in all of video games. Yeah. I was trying to think of other merchants. Who's the fucking guy from Breath of the Wild, the traveling merchant? Yeah, that guy. I can't remember his name. But that guy is one of them. He's one of them. The little guy behind the desk in the Pokimarts, who's the one guy. Yeah. He's good. There's an Ultima 4 merchant who that game is about like a big element of that is virtue. Yeah. So there's there's a blind merchant and he's like, I cannot see. Please count out the number, the amount of number of pieces of gold for this item. And you can rob him. Like you can't just be like, I'm just going to give you one a piece of gold for this like fucking a nice broadsword or whatever. Yeah. But then you get punished in the game because you're not being virtuous. You're being dishonest. So it's kind of like, oh, I kind of like the the moral quality to that. You know, yeah. Anytime you have something in a game where it's like I can do something devious and get an advantage, but I'm also like kind of karmically punished. I always think that's a fun, you know, push pull. But yeah, I like this guy big time. I like him too. Ranch. I love him. And that's do we like this guy? I think it works. I think do we like this guy works? I think you could do it for a long time. I'd be interested and do do we like this guy with some guys that we weren't familiar with because I knew every one of these guys. Yeah, that's true. If we have some guys, there was like a little bit. No, no, but I think this was fun. Yeah. Because I think also like our audience knows these guys and will be like have some opinions on these guys. Yes. But it would be interesting to blind or act to a guy and just like make a judgment. Right. Who is this guy? Yeah. Who is this? I mean, that could be another version of it. Who's this guy? Who is this guy? So we could see a guy and be like, who is this guy? And then we can reveal who the guy is. That's pretty good. I like that. But I think do we like this guy is maybe a little bit better, a little more open-ended. It's nice. That's this week's good. Nice job, Matt. That's this week's get played.
